Last week I started volunteering at my local Goodwill, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 2 pm. I help out in the back of the store, sorting out the items that customers donate.

After my shift is over, I take some time to peruse the store, seeing if there are any good electronics and vacuum cleaners. Last week, there was a rather mundane selection, but today I saw some interesting machines!

They had a Bissell Powerforce Bagless Turbo vacuum. Nothing special about it; these Bissell Powerforces are pretty common. There was also a Dirt Devil Versa Stick; it looked a lot like the Swift Stick I used to have that came as a bonus with my Dirt Devil Swivel Glide Vision back in 2001.

The two vacuums that stood out were an Electrolux Prolux upright and a Dyson DC14 All Floors. I know nothing about the Prolux upright, and the Dyson was missing its attachments. I'm kinda tempted to buy the Dyson.

Last week, I saw some Hoover machines; namely an older WindTunnel Bagless with the Twin Chamber system, a WindTunnel T-Series P.A.W.S. and a WindTunnel 2 High Capacity. I've had my fill of Hoovers, so I passed them up. I also saw a Dirt Devil Vision.

Here is today's selection. I wonder if I can get an employee discount on anything at my work?

Wow... I could never work at our Goodwill because I’d get this urge to buy EVERY single vacuum cleaner I saw brought in. Lol

I only go shop at ours 2 or 3 times a month.. if I was there working every week.. I’d have to pay THEM. I typically end up buying one or two vacuums, take them home for a complete overhaul, missing or broken parts get replaced, then I sanitize the entire vacuum with OdoBan, print off the instructions online and donate it back to a different store.. Volunteers of America go to Goodwill and vice versa. I Love helping people even though it’s not much.. I still estimate I refurb 4 to 6 a month and I’ve done this almost two years. I’ve kept a few of my finds but 90% go back donated like brand new vacuums because I enjoy doing it.

That Bissell looks very clean but true, very common. I too like the Dyson and you can buy really nice “generic” brand Dyson tools that look and feel almost identical. I found that out watching Roger (ibaisaic) refurbish a family members Sebo X upright and the tools were very nice! I’ve looked online and they make generic tools for many, including Dyson.

The Electrolux is most likely a great find too.. I’m not familiar with many commercial vacuums and I don’t usually buy the “L” shaped brushroll heads.. it’s not centered and I’m odd about things like that. Lol. My Sebo Felix is the only vacuum I own with that style head but the bump out side is not very long.

Congratulations on the new job Nick, that is great you working at Goodwill and think of all the people who benefit from your hard work and help! I hope you find they give you an employee discount, I’m thinking I’ve heard someone at our Goodwill say they get a percentage off... not totally sure but fingers crossed!

Thanks for sharing!

I don't know if I'll buy any vacuums at my work, especially as my dad and his girlfriend don't like having a hoard of vacuums in our garage. They donated a couple of vacuums to Goodwill last year, and I posted about this in probably the most unnecessary thread ever created on Vacuumland. I posted about donating some vacuums, and two people asked about a vacuum, and offered to pay shipping, and I rudely refused both times. Because there's simply no reason whatever to ask about which vacuums to donate in the first place, and that it's clearly up to me to decide what to keep, I won't bother posting about donating vacuums next time, and also watch my online manners.

Anyway, I hope I can get hired at Goodwill! I just need to get in on time and work hard, which I have been doing. I've got my fingers crossed!

Get the ProLux!!!

human's profile picture
The only one of those machines that remotely piques my interest is the ProLux. That's the heavy duty version of the Electrolux Discovery/Epic/Genesis/UltraLux/etc. upright. It's a twin-motor monster. The main difference between it and the household models is it has a heavier motor and longer cord. If it's got a three-prong plug, it's a commercial model. Two prongs and it's a heavy duty household model. I have two Discoveries and a Genesis. They're all great machines, but being more powerful, the ProLux would be even better.

I agree with getting the ProLux. There are aftermarket attachment kits (and I’m sure some genuine ones on ebay or at an Aerus dealer) you can buy in order to have a full fledged home vacuum cleaner system. My Lux upright is one of my most favorite vacuums ever and I get my floor cleaning finished a lot quicker with it. It’s really strong and operates with a low noise level.

You do get employee discount but you cannot buy anything until your shift is over. IIRC the discount is 20% I think.

My goodwill prices all vacuums at $29.99 and they sit there for weeks. I always wait until half off to buy a vacuum if its still there as $14 is better than $29.

Also don't get your hopes up. Every vacuum I've gotten at my Goodwill has had a near-death motor or the kind of person that thinks 1 vacuum bag will last the entire life of the vacuum.

My local Habitat Restore has a better vacuum selection as they personally use every vacuum donated as the in-store vacuum until the bag is full and then they sell it (full bag included). So they get a full test run for many months. They got a Kirby G4 in there once and it was nearly mint, I kept tabs on it by going in the store an hour before closing a couple times a month for 2 months and they were still using it. I didn't get back there until a month later and it was gone, I suspect an employee scalped it.

But yeah the biggest problem with Goodwill is the employees pricing items, you need to be experienced in old junk and the market value of items. Like not charging $29.99 for a pair of "Stereo headphones" from the 1970's because it says "high fidelity sound" on it and looks like a pair of Beats. Or $19.99 for a mixer with no beaters that cost $17 to replace the beaters. They also throw a lot of stuff in the tip. People donating brand new $200 printers in the box, they go right in the bin to be shipped off to the recycling center.

The best way to find out what thrift store makes the most of your donations is to go into one and look around at the merchandise. If you see them trying to sell old Vlassic pickle jars and modern-day plastic coffee cans for 99 cents there's a good chance they will put your donations on the floor and not in the dumpster.

I usually have fun going into a thrift store for 2 weeks after I donate stuff to see what they priced my stuff at. One time I had to buy back my own hammer I donated because I found out I actually should have kept it. lol

I have to agree, the only decent machine out of the lot looks to be the Prolux. Did you by change purchase any of the machines at the asking price? $29.99 isn't bad at all for the Electrolux, provided it works :) The rest are pretty much junk.

Questions

niclonnic's profile picture
I have a few questions concerning the Prolux.

1. I don't see any on-board attachments. How do I get around this?

2. What kind of bags does it take?

3. Where can I find the bags?

@luxkid1980 I didn't purchase any of these machines at the asking price.

Most Electrolux uprights have tools on a plastic caddy, similar to what Kirby offered until fairly recently when they went to a tool satchel. I have a Discovery Plus, which is the same as a Discovery II but with brackets to store the attachments onboard. Believe me, you don't want this option. While it's handy for storage, it's beyond ungainly to use as an upright that way. At a minimum, I have to take the hose off and usually the wands as well. The standard toolset would include a hose, wands, crevice tool and reversible dusting brush/upholstery tool. If the machine has a plug-in for powered accessories, the kit would also include an electrified hose instead of a standard one and a SideKick power nozzle. You can find these tool kits, or just the individual tools, pretty easily on eBay.

The prolux takes "U" style bags, like these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Upright-Styl...

You can find the bags at any Aerus-Electrolux store. Others probably too.

Here are the attachments and caddy that work with most of the Electrolux uprights:

I went to work today, and the Dyson was gone, but the Prolux was still there! I didn't buy it, though. The vacuums are only $9.99 each.

In addition, I saw a Hoover Runabout canister in green. However, I didn't take any pics after work.

Ditto! I could clear all those out for the price of what 1 Goodwill vacuum costs here in Indiana. I just paid $18 for an Oreck XL (gold logos) with a frayed cord and homemade wooden wheels and a bag that won't stop crumpling itself up (from the "Oreck" sash ribbon). lol I only have 1 Dyson that cost me $30. I could only ever dream of getting a Dyson that cheaply.

I dunno, for some reason in my area vacuums are priced high and seldom found.

$9.99 for ProLux----BUY IT NOW!!!!!FAR BETTER than the Dyson!!!!the little door on the top of the bag housing is where the hose plugs in.This will work as a "canister" vac but is VERY ungainly.Best to have a separate canister vacuum.Often Areus sell this like a package.

I've seen a few newer Kirbys and one or two Electrolux Renaissance vacuums at my Goodwill. Awhile back there was a teal Hoover Sprint Elite-style vacuum in good shape. Most of these have been priced at less than $20. Otherwise mostly bagless uprights. I think I did see an Electrolux Oxygen canister awhile back as well.

Jump all over that Pro-Lux!

If I saw that Pro-Lux I'd jump on it in a heartbeat!!! I frequent the local goodwill and I bought an Epic 6500 shampooer for $5.00! Awhile back I bought a Lux 9000 canister for $10.00! It needed the hose straightened out as near the handle it was crushed. A few taps with a hammer straightened it right out! Goodwill always has Kirbys, also see quite a few Kenmore canisters but I jump on the Electrolux vacuums immediately!

Update #2

niclonnic's profile picture
Today at work, the Prolux was still there, and again, I didn't buy it. I honestly don't have a use for a bagged, commercial upright vacuum at my house, due to the ongoing cost of bags.

Soon, I will be getting a vintage vacuum that I've been after for many, many years. I'm keeping it a secret until I get it.

Bags are cheap!

human's profile picture
Bags for Electrolux upright (U) and canister (C) machines are among the least expensive for any bagged machines. When bought in bulk, they come in well under a dollar each. Frankly, I wouldn't have a bagless machine. They're too much of a hassle to keep clean and unclogged. The utter convenience of a bag is a very small price to pay for not being up to my elbows in dirt every time I clean the thing out.

Yes

A long time ago in an apartment far, far away....

My family had a Eureka Ultra ESP with a white hood and black outer bag. My parents used it when my sister and I were very young children. I actually posted about this vacuum about a month ago in the Vintage forum. I'm including a link to it down below.

Sometime in the mid- to late 90s, we fell for an infomercial about a revolutionary new vacuum called the Fantom Fury, which eliminated filter bags. My dad subsequently ordered it. It became the best vacuum we ever used, up until that fateful day in the summer of 2001. The cord became damaged and the entire vacuum became unusable. So we got rid of it, and I never saw the Fantom Fury again.

Upon moving into our current house in the summer of 2001, we purchased a brand new Dirt Devil Swivel Glide Vision vacuum, which came with a "Swift Stick" stick vacuum as a bonus. It was an OK vacuum; that vacuum, including all the other ones that came after it, just didn't seem to have that same magic. Despite being a little kid at the apartment, I didn't realize how much of an impact the Fantom had on us. So we've had bagless vacuums ever since. And the revolution continues....

I saw an original Fantom Fury the other weekend at the Goodwill. It looked almost unused on the floor, but its dust bin stunk so bad that I'm surprised anyone bought or wanted it. Smelled like dirty feet! It was gone by the next weekend though so someone took the plunge.

That's one of my dislikes for bagless cleaners; the terrible smell I have a feeling most will suffer from sooner or later. Its so easy to change out a paper bag on the other models. No mess to clean out, no dust cloud, no fuss! :)

I reply:
My sentiments exactly! I had a girlfriend who lived with me a few years ago and insisted I vacuum the house with her bagless Bissell plasticrap vac. It was a miserable experience to clean that thing after using it. It took longer to clean it than it did to clean the house! Why bother with all that when you can toss one bag and slap in another in about 20 seconds. How the industry made this ridiculously illogical shift is simply beyond me.

Prolux Line

Good information from human.

Here are some additional details:

The Prolux series was introduced in 1987 with the 3rd model of the Discovery II. The Electrolux wordmark with the bold serif letters indicates that it was made at the Canadian factory; although it may have been assembled in the U.S.

The line included seven different models that had changes or upgrades including motors (you will find the model # in in small print with the specs on the brush roll hood when you release the handle). In addition, there were four different labels. I'm not sure if the Prolux and Prolux Plus cleaners were sold concurrently or not, but it would have been logical to give customers an option.

Here's a list of labels and models:

Prolux Commercial - model 1572E (8.1A); 40' 2-wire cord
Prolux - models 1572C (8.5A), U111A (10A); 40' 2-wire cord
Prolux Plus (w/onboard caddy) - models 1572G (9.5A), 1717C (10A), 1747 (10A); 40' 2-wire cord
Prolux 2000 - model U136B (8.5A); 35' 2-wire cord

Interestingly, the model 1572E also had these standard household labels: Discovery II (3rd of 3 models), Discovery Plus, Discovery III, Discovery Advantage, Regency Series, and Special Edition. I'm guessing that it was the first Prolux, and that Electrolux decided to take off the "Commercial" descriptor in succeeding models, because it really wasn't commercial grade (3-wire cord, reinforcements). The "heavy duty" descriptor that followed likely denoted the double-insulated 40' cord.

The Prolux cleaners were marked "For Household Use Only" on their name stamps, so they were likely marketed to home cleaning companies, individual home cleaners and home business owners.

In addition, there was a ProTeam label and models:

Prolux by Electrolux - models 1400, 1400X, 1400XP

_________

If you're interested in an onboard caddy, check some Aerus dealers for NOS or trade-ins. I've found some that are willing to network for customers (contacting and purchasing from other dealers). Fyi, be sure to specify that you want the caddy with two wand holders in gray or they may get you a light colored one or a gray one with one wand holder, which was made for the commercials, because of the placement of the power switch.

Aerus discontinued the onboard caddies at least 5 years ago when the current black line was launched.

Ongoing cost of bags? I have never seen any pack of bags over $5. Thrift stores if you go often enough will usually have bags too. I just bought a pack of Kenmore U bags for $1 at Salvation Army, a random Eureka HEPA filter at Goodwill for 80 cents never opened, and my local ACE hardware store still sells Royal upright bags for $2.50 a piece (packages are faded from being on the shelf for 25 years). You can get 24 Electrolux C-Style bags on eBay right now for $12, can't get much cheaper than that!

Corrections & Clarifications

After I posted reply #29 I talked with a friend of mine who used to work for Electrolux. He offered the following corrections and clarifications:

1) 'Heavy Duty'/'Industrial' (designing & manufacturing) and 'Commercial' (purchasing & selling) are often used interchangeably as descriptors (think 'industrial strength' and 'commercial strength'). So Prolux cleaners were, in fact, intended for commercial use, because of the double-insulated longer cord cord. The 'heavy duty' descriptor was also used on the later B-8s because of the double-insulated cord.

There was sometimes lack of consistency among Electrolux's printing and manufacturing divisions. So the Prolux cleaners were marked 'Heavy Duty' (except for the one marked Prolux Commercial by Electrolux and Prolux 2000) but literature used the term 'commercial'.

2) As far as he knew there was only one Prolux cleaner (model 1717C) whose name stamp included 'For Household Use Only'. He thought that was an oversight as he didn't know of any differences in construction between it and the others.

3) There was also a Prolux-labeled power nozzle used with some of the CB2000s. It had the same gray color and printing as the uprights.

4) He thinks the 1572E labeled Prolux Commercial 'by Electrolux' (which I didn't mention) may have been sold in retail, because "by Electrolux" was often used on the label for those cleaners. It's also been used for outsourced cleaners; although he didn't think that was the case with the Prolux.

5) Veridian, a retail brand of Aerus, also had a label called Prolux OBT (onboard tools). It was like the Xtreme Plus, Lux 4000, & Lux 6000 with the attached hose w/wand and tools.

6) Besides the motors, other differences among the models would have been the location of the reset switch (back side or nozzle), brush roll guards (metal or plastic), hard-wired or detachable power cord, and whether it was equipped with a carrying handle. These would have coincided the contemporaneous household cleaners.

7) The model U111A's label was Prolux Plus.

8) Aerus (Electrolux LLC) cleaners labeled Electrolux Commercial or Lux Commercial by Aerus, made by ProTeam and ?, have had reinforced construction, 3-wire cords, metal brush roll guards, and a System Performance Indicator. All had detachable cords, so they lacked the electric hose option for the Sidekick.

9) The Prolux label was bought by Prolux, LLC, located in Utah, about 5 years ago. He wasn't sure if it's run by a former Aerus exec or if it's somehow connected to Aerus.

Some shelves were rearranged! So now this allows the vacuums to sit on the shelf, rather than being out in the open, on the floor.

Again, the Prolux was still there, and I didn't get it. Looks like it's a tough sell. The other day, I saw a Black & Decker Air Swivel vacuum for sale, but today, it was gone. When I got to work this morning, I saw a Hoover WindTunnel T-Series bagged upright for sale, but somebody bought it by the time my shift was over. It didn't have a bag installed. I also found a Bissell Powerforce Compact vacuum, originally from Walmart.

I didn't take a pic of today's selection.

Stop! You're under arrest because you used a commercial vacuum in a residential home!

Shame it's being left to sit there, because getting an Electrolux like that for that cheap is a once in a great while thing. They do best on low pile carpet, their suction is terrible for anything thicker. I have an Epic 9500SR I use in my basement and it does great down there on the glue-down carpet (my Kirby will actually lift that carpet off the concrete) I found an Amway Cleartrak at Goodwill in 2013, you think I've ever seen one again there? Nope. Likewise the other time in 2010 I seen a Royal there with a aftermarket magnet strip on it to catch tacks and paperclips for $19.99, never seen that again either.

@niclonnic

"Again, the Prolux was still there, and I didn't get it. Looks like it's a tough sell."

A lot of people will probably take one look at the Prolux and think it looks old fashioned or they don't want it because they are used to seeing an upright bagless vacuum with on-board attachments and see that the Prolux doesn't have any. They just don't realize the great motors inside or that attachments aren't that expensive. They also may think bags are too expensive (which they aren't by any means if you buy generic.) Just about every vacuum store I've been in sells generic "U" style bags.

My aunt uses one of the Oreck commercial vacuums in her house and it cleans great. They call it commercial because it has a heavier, longer and grounded power cord. Also its orange in color.

I think niclonnic is biased against bagged vacuums. It appears he has drunk the bagless Kool-Aid.

To add another twist, I found this old email exchange with Aerus:

Q: I would like to know if a Prolux Plus, Model 1717C, is a commercial machine as its nameplate states "For Household Use Only".

What are the differences between your household and commercial machines?

A: Our products, with the exception of the Lux Commercial, are designed for residential home use only. The biggest difference is the warranty, commercially used units only carry a 1-2 year warranty versus the normal 5-20 year warranties we offer for the newer residential vacuum cleaners.

If we may provide additional assistance through our Customer Service Office, please let us know by return email or the by calling the number below.

Thank you,

Aerus Customer Service

@niclonnic

Why not get the Prolux and try it for a month or so to see what you think of it. Then, if you're not satisfied with its performance sell it for a profit?

It isn't the best cleaner out there but its performance is adequate and reliable, it's well-built, it's equipped with a filter bag capacity indicator, and the filter bags are really easy to remove & replace. I also think you'd really like the 40' cord. In addition, parts would be easy to get, because the model has been around for over 30 years. You could do your own 21st century upgrades including adding a HEPA afterfilter and buying HEPA filter bags.

One more question

niclonnic's profile picture
What year is the Prolux from? I'm asking because I'd like to know if it's classified as a "vintage" or "contemporary" vacuum.

Post# 388172 , Reply# 41   3/15/2018 at 21:22 (2,204 days old) by Paul (USA)

Take a photo of it and the name stamp (on the brush roll hood—release the handle assembly to see it). It was introduced in 1987 and discontinued about 10 years later. The '80s & '90s are vintage in Vacuumland.

Also, see if there's a serial # decal on the motor housing or bag housing (typically on the back side). If so, you can tell it to an Aerus dealer, who will tell you when it was originally sold.

How would you get Aerus to provide that information? Does it cost? Do you just email them? If so, @ what address?

Update #3

niclonnic's profile picture
The Prolux? It was still there. Did I buy it? I did not. But I did inspect the machine, and it looks like it could use a good refurbishment. The brush roll was a bit dirty. I looked at the cord, and it has a two-prong plug, so the Prolux is a heavy duty household model.

Also, I saw a Kenmore Intuition canister in blue.

@huskyvacs

I just called a dealer and was given the information for free over the phone. The corporate office has also given me the information over the phone.

The database, though, only goes back to sometime in the 1980s.

@niclonnic

Thanks for the photo. It's a Model 1572C, because it is labeled "Prolux" on the brush roll cover and not "Prolux Plus". So that would have been manufactured sometime in the late 1980s.

Features include: metal brush roll guards, 8.1A or 8.5A motor (I'd forgotten about the upgrade), and slider power switch with indicator (instead of the later rocker switch).

It was not factory-equipped with a carrying handle, which was a later feature of the household line and Prolux line or a 3-wire cord (non of the Proluxes were). In addition, the power cord is not hard-wired but plugged in to the receptacle in the bulkhead. The open receptacle would have allowed a hose cord to be plugged in for the Sidekick mini-nozzle accessory.

Fyi, I've attached a photo of another 1572C's name stamp (note that it does not have the upgraded 8.5 amp motor).

Buy the darn Prolux. You haven't really used a real bagged vacuum cleaner and whining about the cost of bags is ridiculous compared to the longevity of bagged vacs (especially Aerus Electrolux machines). In fact, I just ordered a pack of 12 U bags for the Electrolux upright that I have at work for $8 from Amazon, the bags are cheap and very decently sized. The vacuum is $10, if you hate it then sell it on Craigslist for $40. There's no way for you to lose. I constantly see you complain about bagged vacuum cleaners but you haven't used one since you were a very young child and even then it wasn't a good machine.

Post# 388265 , Reply# 49   3/16/2018 at 20:54 (2,203 days old) by niclonnic (Bonney Lake, WA)
Okay...

niclonnic's profile picture
Once I get approval from a family member, I'll suck it up (pun intended) and buy the Prolux. Then I'll buy bags on Amazon. And if I hate the machine, I'll just resell it, preferably locally as I don't want to deal with shipping a vacuum cleaner. It's just too expensive to do so.

The fact that my family is so devoted to bagless shows how effective Fantom marketing has been back in the day.

Oh, and I didn't even get to use the vacuum as a very young child. Only my parents did. Apparently, the Eureka Ultra ESP was a decent machine, but I don't think it was made to clean a fireplace.

Just my two cents here

panasonicvac's profile picture
I own a Prolux, I got mine last year for around $7. The condition was probably worse than the one you posted on here. I didn't had the time to clean it myself so I took it to a professional and had it serviced for $60 which wasn't too bad if you ask me. Honestly though, I like the vacuum but I don't love it. I was really disappointed that it doesn't have the suction or airflow as well as my Diplomat mainly because the motor is smaller, and the nozzle doesn't have the pressure to hit the carpets as well as my Diplomat. What I really like about the Prolux is that the cord is very long, the belt usually lasts, it's a simple vacuum, and they are durable. However what I don't like is the bags are actually small, there's a reason why they come in big packages because they need to be changed quite often, and if you do get bags avoid the blue Aerus ones because those are terrible. The filtration I would say is pathetic, these don't have a pre or post filter, you could get a pre and post filter for it but they need to be replaced because they cannot be washed so that's another thing to add while buying bags. There's no height adjustment on it. And there's no hose or attachments to store on-board the vacuum, that may not be a problem to you but I never liked doing that myself personally. So that's my thoughts about the Prolux. I'm actually putting mine up for sale because I no longer have interest for it. I'm still going to collect some other Lux uprights that I really want to get but this one just isn't my favorite.

Overall if you really want the Prolux, go ahead and get it. Electrolux isn't usually cheap to get so that's a good deal Goodwill is offering. Just hope the parts that it would need wouldn't be expensive to fix. If you honestly don't care about it and if you don't get approval for this, that's totally fine. I'm sure there are others out there that would want that more than you and it could eventually go to a new home. Also, there are still other vacuums out there that will clean circles around the ProLux, including the newer Lux uprights and the clones like the Perfect DM101 for example. Adin, I hate to say this but I disagree with you because there are some bagless vacuums that I have seen and used (Especially the department store ones) that the ProLux cannot out clean.

Changed my mind...

niclonnic's profile picture
I don't really want this Prolux. I honestly don't care about it, and I won't bother getting approval to buy it. I do not want anybody else to persuade me any further on this thread. It's getting annoying. I don't want to sound like I'm biased towards bagless, but I like having it for the convenience factor, even if it's messy at times. That's why the Prolux is not a suitable machine for my household.

By the way, the "mystery" vintage vacuum that I mentioned the other day should be here on Monday the 19th. I'm still keeping it a surprise until I get it. All I can say is that it's something I've been after for MANY years. One more hint: it's bagless. I'm so excited!

In the end, while this was a fun subject to post about, I won't bother posting about vacuums for sale at my work next time. While I may find some cool machines from time to time, I wanted to see if anybody else found any interesting vacuums at their Goodwill/thrift stores. And then it turned into a persuasion to try and get me to buy the Prolux vacuum, which I do not care for. I don't want to hassle with bags.

Good night,
Nick

@niclonnic

Hi Nick,

I can’t wait to see your new vintage Bagless and I will check out your post when you do. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing your pics too. I enjoyed seeing what was available and sorry I never thought or I would have run over to my goodwill and donation stores and snapped some pics too.

I’m sorry you got frustrated regarding the posts on the Prolux. I’m not defending anyone or trying to lessen your feelings of frustration.. but I will say this.. we are all die hard collectors and have a LOT of passion for our Vacuums. I know nobody on here meant anything bad by their comments but more of a WOW... they all wished They could have bought the Prolux and pushed you to buy it because of their passion or liking for it. I’m very new to this site, but I find that ALL the guys mean well and share their feelings and collecter passions in a way I’ve learned to NOT take personally but to enjoy and widen my thinking. I’m more of a “all over the place” collector and don’t have one favorite brand.. so I tend to go with the flow, but I understand where the guys are coming from that love one brand and get super excited about that brand. Hey, I Love my Shark Bagless vacuums and jokingly posted about the villagers chasing me with torches.. it’s cool to like what you like and diversity is what will make this site really cool and fun. Sometimes I just think we all need to step back from our opinions and just go with the flow and cheer others on instead of getting as nit picky as even I have been known to do. We’re human and full of thoughts and feelings. No harm, No foul.

Anyhow, Nick.. I respect you very much and am sorry the thread didn’t go in the direction you wished. Like I said, I wish I’d known your desire for all of us to share pics.. I’d have run over to our stores in town to see what was sitting around waiting to be adopted. LOL. Regardless, thank you Nick for your thread and your contribution here.. I really am looking forward to your Mystery Vacuum post.

Take care and if you feel like it, PLEASE do post again and post anything you like and even list or describe what you want to do on your post.. a lot of us on here will read it and we will contribute whatever we can to add to your thoughts. Hopefully you’ll see we don’t mean to be pushy.. as I say Passionate and Pushy are a fine line and we vacuum collectors mean well but sometimes we are blinded by our passion. I have to admit (although it’s very embarrassing) I get excited, chills sometimes and smile with a goofy grin sometimes when I see a vacuum that “speaks” to me.

Thank you Nick.. I really enjoyed your post and especially the pics. Have a great day!

I passed up a nice Prolux like that for $5 not that long ago. It simply wasn’t my style. Does everyone hate me now?

If niclonnic doesn’t want the Prolux, so what? It doesn’t affect you all.

P.S. Congrats on your Fantom Fury! It looks very nice!

I don't think anyone hates anyone here, it's just people are confused as to why he hates bagged vacuums so much and is so adamant about not getting it like it's got the bubonic plague. That's what I believe people are being hung up on. I wouldn't say hatred, just a confusion.

To the people that want it; it's been there for most of the month, pack a big suitcase and get a 1-way plane ticket each way (or drive), and head up there and get it! I know I would if I could! :)

I find the sudden change of heart minutes after PanasonicVac’s post rather interesting given that you were curious and seemingly into the Lux before that.

And it never struck me (or anyone else it seems for that matter) that your thread was about “What vacuums do you see at Goodwill?” You asked questions about the machine, such as where to get bags, how to do tool usage, if it’s vintage or contemporary, etc. If you didn’t care and had no interest, then why not have said from the start “I’m not going to get these machines, I just wanted to discuss vacs you guys see at Goodwill.”?

For the record, I don’t hate you for not getting it or not wanting it or any of that. You like Fantoms and Dysons and that’s cool. Good luck and hopefully others that you want to find will come your way.

PS: My favorite Fantoms were the Wildcat, Fury, and the Lightning. Never had the pleasure to use them but they seemed cool on TV.

My use of "hate" was hyperbole. Hopefully no actual hate has stemmed from this thread. However, I was somewhat surprised how many folks hounded niclonnic about the vacuum. I got the hint early on in the thread; he didn't want it.

I've never understood how people get stirred up about what other people like. So what if some people like bagless vacuums, even exclusively? Again, it doesn't affect you all.

Anyways, I'm not here to argue. I just suggest to everyone that you don't treat others poorly over what they like. We should just appreciate our differences--this place would be pretty boring if we all liked exactly the same thing.

My apologies

For the misunderstanding and confusion. Because of my Asperger's, my mind often goes all over the place. I really should've worded my OP differently, and just had a discussion about what vacuums we see at Goodwill. I didn't expect this to turn into an all-out persuasion to get me to buy the Prolux. That's why I flip-flopped on PanasonicVac's post.

As for bagged vacuums, I honestly don't hate them. I've found that bags make less of a mess compared to emptying a bagless. But like I've always said, I enjoy bagless for the convenience factor. And I don't really have a problem with dust clouds.

My reason for persuading you to purchase the Prolux is that you haven't really used any bagged vacuums but you're so adverse to the idea of owning one. It's fine to have an opinion, but it bothers me when people develop opinions on ideas without giving the opposing option a chance.

Nice Fury, I've owned a couple of Thunders and a Lightning and they're good machines.

When I got to work this morning, the Prolux was still there; at the end of my shift, I checked the vacuum shelf, and it was gone! Somebody FINALLY bought it after it sat there for the past two weeks.

Now I would like to reform this thread. I should've titled this thread "What vacuums do you see at Goodwill?" I likely won't buy a vacuum from work; I just want to discuss vacuums you guys see at Goodwill.

Here is today's selection.

This reminds me

niclonnic's profile picture
My dad's girlfriend has a Shark Steam Pocket Mop. A couple years ago, she was preparing to move in with us, and thus needed her old house cleaned. I noticed this in a closet, and asked if I could use it, and she said I could! It's a pleasure to use, and gets the floors clean without the use of harsh chemicals! We brought it to my house, and now I use it to clean the bathroom floors. However, I can't use it on our new laminate, because it will warp the flooring.

Here's a flashback: In the summer of 2009, my mom fell for an infomercial for the "H2O Mop Ultra" by Thane. She called and ordered it. When it arrived, she used the carpet glider and steamed all of the downstairs carpets. She then steamed the bathroom floor. However, she was ultimately dissatisfied by its performance, so she sent it back for a full refund.

Anyway, I'm on the lookout for any impressive vacuums. Earlier, some customers donated a couple of vacuums: a Eureka AirSpeed One Turbo in black and lime green, along with a Hoover WindTunnel 2 Rewind Pet in gray and orange. The Hoover looked extremely similar to mine except for the color scheme, and it only had the turbo brush.

Wow Nick,

Thanks for sharing and I will be out either tomorrow or Sunday at the Goodwill and VOA and this great thrift shop we have, and I will take pictures of any vacuums I see. This will be fun, like a scavenger hunt of sorts.

I LOVE the two Hoovers in your picture.. The Burgundy Hoover Windtunnel brings back fond memories, I remember ordering this off an infomercial on TV and couldn’t wait for it to arrive in the mail. Other than being very loud, it was a great vacuum. The Bagless next to it was the next Hoover I purchased after seeing it at the Service Merchandise Store (Anyone else remember this store??) and I had to have it.. I Loved the Tan color too and at one time I had these two and the Hoover Windtunnel Self Propelled in dark green! I kinda wish I had all three back for my collection.

The other reason I love to refurb Hoover vacuums, the replacement parts are so inexpensive! I can get a new brushroll, belts, bags and any missing tools for the vacuums I rescue and refurb from our Goodwill. I just finished refurbishing a cool Hoover Windtunnel 2 Bagless with the Electronic Surface Control System Auto Height Adjustment. I got really lucky with this one as it was only clogged and dirty, but once I took it apart and sanitized it, the only thing I had to do was order the three black attachments on the back (Dusting Brush, Crevice Tool and Upholstery Tool) The Hoover Mini Turbo Tool was still attached and never used, brand new. I was very happy after checking everything over and finding basically the only reason someone dumped it off at Goodwill, was a clog in the main brushroll hose leading up the back. The automatic height and brushroll control works perfectly, the Dirt Finder works great and the handle is NOT broken, as this is something I’ve heard is kinda common. The only thing I’m disappointed about.. I forgot to take BEFORE pics.. yuck this was filthy and neglected.. full of dirt and clogs. But I saved another Hoover and will set her back into the wild! LOL

I can’t wait now to get pictures at the Goodwill and VOA tomorrow Nick.. I hope they have some nice vacuums for me to get pics of for your thread! I will drop off this beautiful, cleaned and refurbished Hoover Windtunnel 2 at a different store than I picked it up and donate it back.. someone is going to have a wonderful vacuum cleaner. I love giving back!

Thanks

Wow, it's the Hoover with the infamous "self-cleaning" HEPA filter. It just did NOT work as claimed, based off my research and reading reviews on Amazon. There's a video on YouTube from 10 years ago where a disgruntled man shows how he has to manually clean the clogged filter using a screwdriver; it was his 3rd time doing it in less than a year. I'll include a link to it below.

You know, I admire these older Hoovers, back when the company was owned by Maytag. I remember back in 2005, I was in 5th grade, and that was the height of my vacuum cleaner obsession. After school, I would get on my Windows XP computer and look up all kinds of stuff about vacuums, including these Hoovers. Ironically, I didn't actually vacuum at the time, since I was afraid of the noise. But I eventually overcame that. Good times!

Anyway, two vacuums I saw at work today were pretty filthy. The canisters were packed with dirt from the previous owners.

I'd love to see pictures of what everybody sees at their Goodwill/thrift stores!

Hey Nick,

Wow I’d not heard of this filter issue and when I got this Hoover, the filter was very clean. It seems to work at keeping itself clean, but I haven’t used it much since refurbishing it.

This one the filter is still white and when I opened it up there was very little dust. I did check deep in the pleats and nothing. I guess it might have something to do with “what” he is vacuuming up??

Thanks for the tip.. I will be returning it anyway and I’m sure someone will enjoy it. Oh and when I bought my first Hoover Windtunnel vacuums off of TV infomercials, it was in early 1997 right after Maytag took ownership but before they put the Maytag name on the box. Windtunnel was a Maytag company design and the new innovation for Hoover at the time. Subsequent purchases in later years I remember the Maytag name on Hoover boxes. It’s SO funny as now TTI owns Hoover (also Dirt Devil, Royal, Oreck and commercial Hoover) but now Vacuum cleaners branded “Maytag” are made by Tacony. Who would have guessed it would go from so many brand names to just a few giant companies owning all the brands. It’s kinda sad we don’t have separate brands anymore.. I miss Hoover in North Canton Ohio, I used to LOVE to visit and take the tour!

Oh well... they call it progress! I don’t know.....

For anyone cheap - a strong PSI air compressor (maybe turned up to 70-80) with a precision blow gun nozzle can clean those HEPA filters out that cannot be washed. Just run the nozzle through each cleat. I used it on my Eureka Optima and blew out years of caked-in-solid dirt from the cracks (just cover your mouth and turn away when you hit it). It's the original filter that came with the vacuum and it runs like new again, and the cord doesn't heat up as much because the motor isn't straining so hard to get airflow. I'll get a new filter for it though when I fix it because it needs a total teardown and some parts replaced here and there.

Should I buy and refurb any of these three vacuums?

Hi guys,

These are what I found last night at my Goodwill store.

Any thoughts on refurb worthiness of any of these three?

The Kenmore (Left) has seen better days with a brushroll worn to barely no bristles, wrapped with long hairs and the bag compartment is totally trashed with a full bag that burst. Just not sure I could still source parts for it?

The Hoover Preferred (Right) has all its parts and just needs a deep clean and new bag and belt.. possibly a new brushroll, but all tools are attached and barely used. I didn’t have an opportunity to plug it in, but I’m thinking these, like most Hoovers were loud? Thoughts?

The Hoover Tempo (middle pic) is priced so high I could buy a brand new, in box for $10 bucks more.. Walmart had one ordered online and returned in the store priced at $30 bucks.

Thanks guys!

Patrick

I'd at least

get the Preferred and the Kenmore, if you can. The Kenmore was made by Panasonic, and is a design that was around for many years, so parts availability is good. I've been wanting to pick up a machine like that, myself.

The Tempo is a decent vac that cleans way better than most at it's price point. But it's not worth it if it's priced that close to a new one.

Once my U1 arrives, if it works as expected, I'll be taking my Dyson DC14 with all the attachments to Goodwill. The rollerbrush clutch foot knob is pretty temperamental, but other that it does fine. It just is not worth my effort to package and ship it for sale for what it is worth. I drop stuff off at the Goodwill about once a month on my way to Costco.

Update

These days, I don't really see any good vacuums at my Goodwill anymore. I generally see cheap bagless vacuums being donated; occasionally, some bagged machines. One time, I saw a Eureka Boss SmartVac; otherwise, nothing too exciting.

Here is today's lackluster selection.

I, too, feel the selection of vacuums at my preferred location has declined lately.

That thread is over five years old and the author later confirmed here that they're long gone.

What a flashback...

I'm not sure why someone decided to revive this old thread of mine, but those vacuums are indeed long gone, and I stopped volunteering at this Goodwill after 7 months.

That October, when an opening popped up, I hurriedly applied for it. They reviewed my qualifications, but "however, at the present time we have decided to move forward with another candidate." So I called the store and got ahold of the manager. When I asked him why I was rejected, he stated that I wasn't working fast enough; I had to work twice as fast as my then-current pace in order to be employed at the store. That left me distraught. So I decided, right then and there, to stop volunteering. The manager was perfectly fine with that.

Essentially, Goodwill took advantage of me by having me sort donations without pay. However, this was overall a solid experience for me, seeing what goes on behind the scenes of a thrift store. My work flow went pretty well, but whenever something unknown or of interest came in, I would show it to others, which decreased my productivity. However, I was able to get back to work quickly. On some occasions, I would be sent out to the main floor to rearrange the shelves.

Ever since my Goodwill stint, I rarely came back to the store as a customer. And even when I do, I hardly see any vacuums for sale anymore.
