I've finally tracked down a version of the Junior 375 I've wanted for ages; its earliest incarnation, made from 1936-'38. Note the black stripe which runs down the centre of the front casing, as a streamlined-styling cue shared with it's bigger brothers, Models 475 and 825. All 3 machines had benefitted from a restyle by Henry Dreyfuss.

It was in very nice condition when I got it out of it's packaging, but the motor sounded oddly high-pitched. I separated the motor from the fan casing and found the cause of the problem:

A huge lump of dirt...

which was jamming the fan and causing it to come loose on the armature:

Model and Serial numbers...

wish I knew where it came in production...was it the 805th one made, or the 30,805th? And how many were made in total?!

Hand grip..

remarkably free from wear, this one still has its delicate pattern showing clearly. It's unusual to find one like this, usually the combined effects of friction, and oils in the sweat from the hands, erodes this away.

Up and running...

purring away, now the motor's been dismantled and cleaned. The black stripe has also been resprayed, the paint was getting a bit flaky.

Nearly complete ensemble...

- Junior 375 w/ original bag and flex
- Manual
- Original motor unit/bag box
- Hose
- Convertor
- Upholstery nozzle

I'm missing an extention tube, the optional flat nozzle, a box for the tools and an original plug.

Streamlined Art Deco bakelite rear casing...

one of the more major differences in the new design by Henry Dreyfuss, when compared to Model 370 - which the 375 replaced after just 2 years.

All of your Hoover Juniors are very nice. They are one of the things I really like about the UK model line. The fact they are not available in the US makes them all the more interesting.

370/375 bag mystery.

Many of us have seen the photo on the front of the 370 instruction booklet with its lovely matching style of bag. I have never seen a 370 with a bag like that actually fitted, but.....a museum not so far from us has an early 375; black central stripe type fitted with a 370 style bag ? Is this correct or have the museum simply fitted what is a very rare bag onto the wrong model ?

Jack, If you can't throw light onto this then I think we're stuck !!!

Hi Walter!

Great to hear from you :)

As you say, Model 370 originally shared a bag design with Models 450, 800 and 925. However, many were replaced over the years, and Model 375 had an all-new design, as shown on my one above.

I have actually seen a photograph of a 370 with the 800 design, which also features the words 'Jubilee Cleaner' on it - I don't know if UK cleaners were ever designated this way, so perhaps it was a Canadian version. Models 425, 750 and 900 were the 30th Anniversary Jubilee range in the US, but I've seen English adverts referring in the text to Model 800 as 'the Jubilee cleaner', so perhaps we Brits were celebrating a different Jubilee with a later model range.

It is certainly possible that the 375 you mention is indeed a very early one, made with the older bag design. Hoover did often seem to carry design details from older models over to the cleaner that replaced them, then updating the machine during the production run. I'm afraid without access to achive material from the time, I can't give you a definite answer.

The picture below comes from the site of the guy with the wonderful collection of Vorwerk cleaners in Germany. It shows the original 370 bag, minus the mysterious 'Jubilee' lettering:

These are such beautiful models, and as pointed out, all the more alluring to those of us "on the other side of the pond" since they were never sold here.

Wonder why.

I like them all but have to say, the 370 is the one that really stole my heart (Dreyfuss influence on the 375 notwithstanding), and I'd love to find one someday.

Early Post War...!!!

Hi Jack, another fine example, very classic appliance and sooo powerful in its time, that sound was legendary!!!!!!!!those Jubilee bags look the part,

Your Model F30,805 would be Early Post War, probably October 1945, the Pre War models had a seven figure serial number - no pre-fix....

Post War started:
F10,000 July 1945
F55,000 January 1946
F187,000 January 1947
F255,000 July 1947
F333,000 January 1948
F400,000 July 1948
F427,000 January 1949
F514,000 July 1949
F602,500 January 1950
F698,700 July 1950

Nowthen, given those numbers, where are they all???..........!!!! and tease over, just WHERE did they end up on Tuesday....LOL

More Info about the 370

portable's profile picture
In the book "Industrial Design" by John Heskett (a British publication) there is a picture of a 370 that is badged on the bag as Jubilee and captioned as 1935. As soon as I can get my scanner working, I'll "beam it up" - could be a day or two. Also, there are many examples of US Hoover ads indicating that the Models 800 AND 825 (also known as Sentinel 35 and much touted as the Henry Drefuss model) were SENTINEL SERIES models. Just to add to the confusion...

Mike - very interested to read what you wrote; what you've posted throws my understanding of the Junior development into chaos! I always forget whether the 'F' prefix is pre- or post-war. I thought the black stripe version was only made from 36-38, before changing to the plain silver version. Obviously I was wrong!

My other 375 is also early post-war, serial no. F43857. It has no black stripe, but the old-style wheels.

John - that book you mention is very likely to be the library book I mentioned. I'd love to see a scan if you get time, the book always seems to be 'on loan' whenever I visit the library!

Jubilee Hoovers

....thinking about it, I'm sure I've seen/read that the UK 370,475 & 825 were known as jubilee hoovers for the silver jubilee celebrations of King George V in 1935, perhaps someone can confirm ?

I don't know about the 475 and 825..

...but the 800 was:

Model 800

Thank-you Jack, its such a long time since seeing that article any-road-up the 800 is my favourite 'big' pre-war hoover, it has the lot !!.
I once tried out an 80's turbopower hose and all-purpose brush on a friends 800, obviously with the correct adaptor, the pull was remarkable, a good combo ?
If only we could buy a cleaner like that now.....something about flying pigs !!

hmm, I always thot the designation "Silver Jubilee" was in deference to Hoover's 25th anniversary. I believe that's what Stan Kann told me once upon a time.

Post# 41349 , Reply# 35   5/23/2008 at 16:22 (5,814 days old) by vintagehoover ()
25th Anniversary

Walter - my Model 800 is probably my favourite cleaner out of all the machines I own. It performs just as well as the later Seniors, if not better - it has a similar-powered motor, but a much larger fan and more direct air path). And of course, nothing comes close to matching that streamlined, gleaming Art Deco style!

Seamus - sorry, I don't have a copy of this ad myself, the picture was borrowed from 'Simply Switch On'.

Charles Richard - In the US, Models 425, 750 and 900 were the Jubilee cleaners. Hoover actually sent Stan a 'Silver Jubilee' bag for his 425 when he wrote and asked them!! The 800 ad above does say 'Jubilee', but the 800 was launched in '33, so I guess we could have been celebrating some different Jubilee over here...maybe even a royal one perhaps, I'm not sure! I wonder if the UK 800 ever had a Jubilee bag. I've never seen an 800 over here with an original bag, let alone a Jubilee one.

Without access to Hoover achives (assuming the information does still exist - seeing the cleaners they supplied from the 100th Anniversary programme, I don't hold out much hope), I can't be more specific because there just isn't any information available out here, other than what I've put together myself. Regrettably, we have no 'historical centre' equivalent.

Beautiful work Jack.

Jack,

You beat me to getting my old black stripe 375 restored, by miles! :D LOL.

Mine is a pre war model, as the serial number has no prefix letter. Pretty high number however, so perhaps not the oldest.

Yours looks outstanding. A work of art as always from the Vintage Hoover Emporium.

I hope to get my U4082 very soon aswell, a welcome addition to the Classic emporiums family!

Will call you soon mate. Happy hoovering.

Clark
