Went to my friends vacuum shop for lunch today, and she showed me this vacuum that has no suction with a fresh bag, vacuum runs smooth on all speed settings. This lady is brilliant with repairs but she cannot figure it out. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks Hank, I'll pass that on as I don't think she had broken the machine down yet. I was surprised to see a Sanitaire vacuum made in West Germany...very nice design.

After Sweden’s Electrolux bought Eureka in 1974, they started to sell 120-volt versions of some of their European canister vacs in North America. Some were rebranded as Eureka, others were rebranded as Sanitaire. Along with Eureka, Electrolux owned both AEG’s vacuum division and the Progress vacuum company - both based in Germany. They also owned the Volta vacuum company - also in Sweden.

So it appears that North Americans were offered Eurekas made by Progress and Volta, and Sanitaires made by AEG. I would bet that you could find your vintage Sanitaire branded as AEG somewhere on the web.

Yeah if the vacuum runs smooth on all speeds, you're just hearing the motor. It's likely the motor shaft or fan is jammed, broken, or otherwise not spinning. Fan might be broken

I meant the fan might be broken off the shaft.

I have no experience fixing canister vacuums but have a question... why is the Red “Bag Check Indicator” illuminated? Could there be a hidden clog like maybe the secondary motor filter was not in place and/or this vacuum was used Without a bag in place.. maybe inside some area is clogged?

Just a thought as I’m wondering why that bag full lights on??

Good luck fixing it.. it’s beautiful vacuum.

It actually looks more like a vintage Volta. Here is a youtube clip from Europe showing a similar Volta canister with the foot pedals and cord port in the exact same position:

Rick, if the vacuum has a new bag & is running smoothly, my guess would be is that there is a foam or rubber seal that is missing or has disintegrated inside the motor compartment. That would explain why the motor sounds ok but yet no suction. It wouldn't be a faulty motor or motor fan, you would be able to tell that right away when you turn it on.

The other fault could be is if a incorrect bag was used, & it doesn't make a proper seal in the bag chamber.

If you had a bad or loose fan-you would hear it-would be loud!Wonder if its bad seals, gaskets.

If it's not a loose/ broken fan but seals, there should still be exhaust coming out!

very nice sounding volta

That volta in the youtube video sounded really nice, very nice sounding motor. Sounds like it had a squeak somewhere, maybe something needed to be oiled, still, a very nice sounding machine.

Rick, I would say its got to be a motor seal or gasket. I had an airway once that sounded wonderful but just didn't suck. When I broke it down all it was was,the rubber motor seal was bad.
