About a year after completing graduate school in 1991, I bought my first brand new vacuum -- an Electrolux Ultralux LX. I gave it away many years ago and sometimes kick myself for doing it.

Well, I just happened on this one on Ebay. It was hard to tell what shape it was in because the photos were poorly staged. So I threw caution to the wind and bought it because the price was right. It came on Thursday and I was pleased to see that it was in really great shape.

So I completely disassembled it, including the motor and power nozzle, and gave it a good cleaning. Now, it runs like a top!

I can't remember, but I think my original Ultralux came with a braided hose.

I've seen some where the chrome trim has a crinkled finish. This is just like my old one, with a smooth finish.

The plastic cover is cracked in the corner so I'll see if a touch of epoxy might fix that.

I was surprised to see that Electrolux went with a larger 5.7" diameter motor. To accommodate the larger size, they had to redesign the mounting lug inside the bulkhead.

Other than the cracked cover, there is a small dent on the bottom. That's not really noticeable.

Nice machine! All in all, I think you're better off with that vinyl hose. In my experience, it's the best performance upgrade you can give any Electrolux canister.

Looks great; nice score! Even with the tiny crack, it sounds like you made a good purchase.

I have an Ultralux LX, too, and it did come with the braided hose. Also, the top has the crinkle finish in chrome.

I was fortunate to get the original October 1992 sales slip from a Craigslist seller. If you contact an Aerus store, it can give you the original sales date of yours using your serial #.

Serial affixes on mine are M_E, and the production # was in the 34,000s.

Not sure if you know, but it was one of the first Electrolux Corporation cleaners to have the lighted power nozzle (1692). Others were the Diplomat LX, Genesis LX and whatever central vac was being manufactured at the time. LX is the symbol for Lux, which is the SI unit [FR: Système International (d'unités)] of illumination.

Enjoy!

That's lovely. I have the "Grand Marquise" version of this model and really like it a lot, other than the noise (spoiled by the hushed whisper of the XXX and G!). Mine came with the original hose but I did not like it -- too short, heavy and stiff. The new genuine coiled vinyl hose is easily a foot longer, much lighter in weight and much more pliable.

Congratulations on your find ! I have both the Ultralux and Grand Marquise. The chrome trim on my Ultralux has the crinkled finish that you described.

I love seeing all the iterations of the 1521! I wonder exactly how many were made?

Crinkle Finish

That crinkle finish was used entirely on another variation of the model 1521 Ultralux..... I personally like the look, although it’s purely aesthetics! Here’s a couple of mine with the crinkle finish and full chrome body.

Great Post! Can you describe how you got to the motor for removal. I have to replace my motor and I don't want to tear into it until I have an idea as to how. Thanks for any help you can give!

The motor is easy to get to.

1) Remove four screws from the cover. Two are under the blower port cover. One is on the top handle and the last one is up front by the bag door. Once those are removed the top will lift off. You can then remove the wire leads on the on/off switch to completely remove the cover.

2). Once the top cover is removed, remove three screws from the cord winder. Two are on top and one is on the bottom. Once those are removed, use a slotted screwdriver and hammer to gently tap the cord winder off.

3) Once the cord winder is off, you can see three wires that connect to the cord winder. Be sure first to mark where they go and then remove them. Two of the terminals are connected together and mount to a single post on the cord winder. They simply slide apart. Next, there's one more connection from the motor field to the black wire on the wiring harness that needs to be separated. All wire should be disconnected by now.

4) Inside the motor housing, remove the four nuts (one at each corner) holding the motor cover and motor in place. Once those are removed, the motor cover will lift off and the motor itself can be pulled out.

Hope this helps!

This series of Electrolux canisters

I've always been confused as to how to identify these vacuums, whatever the official color of the body is called. As far as I can tell, there are three models: Grand Marquis, Ultralux, and Ultralux LX. The Grand Marquis has no name marking and silver top trim, correct? The Ultralux has its name on the back and textured blue top trim, then the Ultralux LX has a different style name label and has silver top trim that was either flat or textured, or is there some other combination? I could swear that I've seen that body with blue top trim and no name label, but maybe not. In any case, could someone with solid knowledge describe how to distinguish these models, perhaps the official name of that grayish-white color?

by the variations of this series. I wonder if, at times, Electrolux built built the same model with slight trim changes.

Thank You!!

You Bet It Helps!! I couldn't ask for better directions! Thank You! I'll let you know how it all turns out! This motor has been in there for close to 30 yrs, it glows blue green when it runs! Time for a new motor then when I feel like fiddlin, I'll rebuild the old one! Thanks again!

Electrolux Model Diamond Jubilee

Hey Guys!

Did you all forget about the Diamond Jubilee? It's also a model 1521. Isn't this model in there with the aforementioned models, too?

And, Eurekastar......my recently acquired Diamond Jubilee also has that same crack in the back only on the right side. Strange how the crack pattern is nearly identical! I wonder if it's a stress crack somehow?

And, gentlemen, HUMAN is spot-on about the replacement vinyl hoses. Even if they are the aftermarket brand/version, they are far superior than the OEM equipment hands down! They are longer, more supple, and will enhance the performance 10-fold. I have used and purchased the aftermarket hoses and have had nothing but good luck with them. Certainly worth the money and at half price--just about! You can't beat them!

Different versions of the Ultralux series

It started with the :

Diamond Jubilee in approx. 1984. That was the only model I remember having the smooth chrome top. It's easy to change that out and I think that's probably what happened with the first vac pictured in this thread.
This vacuum is known for having a faulty motor. It's beige color is rather bland.

Then came the Marquis in about 1986. This was a tanish/taupe color and lasted about a year

Then the Grand Marquis in about 1988. This was, as pictured above a white body, blue trim, blue crinkled painted top, no badge, and a smooth finish beige front. This lasted about a year and had a similar pn to the Marquis but a matching color.

Then the Legacy was very similar to the Grand Marquis.  Not sure what made it different.

Then the Ultralux as pictured above in about 1989. The body was only slightly different to the Grand Marquis. It had a badge with name and the front was a beige crinkled vynil. Also, the power nozzle cover was more rounded, eliminating all the grooves the previous cover had.

Then the Ultralux LX in about 1990, again as pictured above. And also with few canister changes. Here, compared to the Ultralux, it had the full size stick on badge, a chrome crinkled top, and the power nozzle was the first with a head lamp.

Then came the Ultralux Classic about a year later in 1991. This was the same as the LX but the colors were reversed.... and with stunning results if I may add. I bought one of these new from the dealer ( gone now) for about $600. Little did I know I was getting the last of the metal Electrolux canisters. I was just thrilled to have the last one in his inventory. I pampered that thing even despite the woven hose. I always carefully hung it over two hooks to keep it from getting worn.

Of course, not to be forgotten is the Limited Edition Commemorative model which was black and metalic. Only a few were made.

Here's another list of 1521s, which is similar to gregvacs' and includes the color schemes, power nozzles, and other specifics.

All tools, except the CE's, were "light sand gray" (Electrolux's term). I believe the short crevice nozzle was sold with the Marquise, Grand Marquise, and Legacy with its own storage clip on the carrying handle of the cleaner. The rest came with the longer crevice tool, which was stored apart from the cleaner. All originally were paired with braided hoses.

The only ones marked with a label on the body are the DJs in 1984 and the Ultraluxes. All others were labeled only in literature and on packaging.

The mini power nozzle, the Sidekick - model 1562, was introduced either with or shortly after the Marquise's debut. As far as I know it was an option for it and the rest of the 1521s.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

1984-1987: "Diamond Jubilee", light sand gray & jade; "Omni-Flo" power nozzles - PN5 (light sand gray with jade decal) and PN6 (jade with silver decal)
Note - Electrolux Corporation's 60th Jubilee year was 1984. Hose - sand with jade chevrons; only those manufactured in 1984 have the "Diamond Jubilee" decal—the others were not labeled

1987-88: "Marquise", light sand gray & taupe; "Omni-Flo" power nozzle PN6A (light sand gray with taupe decal); Hose - sand with taupe chevrons

1988-89: *"Grand Marquise", light sand gray & navy; "Omni-Flo" power nozzle PN6A (light sand gray with navy decal) Hose - sand with navy chevrons

1989-90: *"Legacy", light sand gray & navy; new hood style power nozzle 1622 (light sand gray with navy Canadian Electrolux wordmark; Hose - sand with navy chevrons

1990-91: "Ultralux", light sand gray & navy; power nozzle 1622 (light sand gray with navy Canadian Electrolux wordmark; Hose - sand with navy chevrons

1991-92: "Ultralux LX" (LX stands for Lux, the SI unit of illumination), light sand gray & navy; lighted power nozzle 1692 (light sand gray with navy USA Electrolux logo); Hose - sand with navy chevrons

1992-93: "Ultralux Classic", navy & light sand gray (colors reversed to match the color scheme of the new Epic series cleaners); lighted power nozzle 1692 (navy with light sand gray USA Electrolux logo); Hose - sand with navy chevrons

1993: "Ultralux CE (Commemorative Edition in honor of the 25th anniversary of the 1205 rectangular-style cleaners, black & chrome; personalized top sales award; lighted power nozzle 1692 (black); Hose - silver with black line tracers—every seventh is accented with a double red line

*These two are easily mistaken for one another since neither is labeled. The subtle difference is that the trim of the bag door cover of the GM is smooth and the L's is textured.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Triple Brush Shampooer/Polisher Models sold concurrently (same color schemes):

1984-1987: 1522 (B-9 in literature & packaging) "Floor Beautifier" or "Diamond Jubilee" decal; also available was the last iteration of the single-brush Turbo Rug Washer

1987-1988: 1522 (B-10 in literature & packaging) "Floor Beautifier" (some did not have identifying decals)

1988-1992: 1522 "Floor Pro"; base - navy; motor housing - light sand gray

1992-1993: 1732 "Floor Pro - Epic Series" (decal is only marked "Epic Series")
base & motor housing - navy

I know this is a long shot in the dark, but does anyone have a brochure for an UltraLux Commemorative Edition they would scan and post by any chance?

I doubt you'd find a brochure on the CE as there were only like 1000 made and they weren't intended for sale.  They were intended as a  gift.

For some reason, Electrolux decided to make a black version as the last metal bodied vacs.  Apparently that meant something at one point.

The ultralux Classic, or really any of the Ultralux models, LOOKED cool; but practical it was not.

Much like any other vacuums made of metal, they were often heavy and easily dented. The end of metal bodied models was a good thing.

Last year I gave away a really nice electrolux canister.  It was the last one I had and no one wanted to buy it.  I gave it to goodwill.  An 80 year old woman was at the donation door and she couldn't lift it. She referred to it as junk. It had a brand new hose but that means nothing to the average person.   embarassedsurprisedundecided

Commemorative Edition

The only time I recall seeing literature on the CE was the monthly prize brochure for probably April(drive month)93.It was a prize for salesmen as who sold X number(probably 50-100) of vacs.I should have one in a box somewhere that I would like to see again myself.

If you do run across that literature, would you care to make me a copy of it? Since I have two CE’s I’d LOVE to have some accompanying literature, brochures, owners manuals, etc. to go with them! Thanks!

Did you win your CEs or buy them and how much did you pay for them?

Your profile says you've lost vacs to (3)three floods.  I'm curious what happened if you don't mind sharing?
