Can anybody name an affordable vacuum that has swivel steering? I'm looking for such a vacuum to buy for my mom, who lives in a small apartment with no pets.

Maybe the Black & Decker Air Swivel? It usually sells for around $50. It is bagless, so cleaning performance will suffer. I've never used one, so I don't have any personal experiences with it. I would recommend a bagged vacuum though. They're so much more sanitary.

That Black+Decker Air Swivel vacuum looks tempting. I looked it up on Amazon, and it has a 3.9 star average rating.

Love the design of the Sebo Felix - you can even hang it up on a hook in the closet. It’s got swivel steering and a top fill bag. If you don’t need the power nozzle for carpet cleaning, the Felix Kombi is a less expensive version with just a combination rug and floor switchover nozzle. Comes with an onboard attachment hose too!

Sorry to disappoint, but the Sebo Felix is way too expensive; in addition, it's bagged. What I'm looking for is an AFFORDABLE vacuum that has swivel steering and is bagless.

On a side note, I realized I accidentally put the wrong tag in this thread: "Recent Vacuum Cleaners from past 20 years." I should've selected "Brand New Vacuum Cleaners." Oh well.

I recommend the Hoover Air lineup. It's affordable that's half the price off of a Dyson or a Shark. It has steering technology, it's bagless, it's cleans well in my opinion, and you can get parts for it.

Vax/Hoover Air Lift Steerable

mike811's profile picture
I had the Vax/Hoover Air Lift Steerable. I can highly recommend it. Light, maneuverable, well cleaning and fairly cheap bagless vacuum.
It has multi cyclonic system so the filter maintenance is quite minimal.
Build quality is ok and perfect for the elderly people.

I would stay away from the Black+Decker Air Swivel. It's cheap and light, but that's all.

- inner diameter of the hose is size of the middle finger.
- suction/air flow is VERY low
- it's hard to push even on the low pile carpets
- it is almost impossible to use on other than very thin carpets
- it eat belts a lot.
+ it's light
+ it's cheap

Just a thought... it’s bagless, swivel steering and it’s around $80 bucks.

The Dirt Devil Razor Vacuum is a good, solid, Lightweight vacuum and I found it did a good job at cleaning and it’s very maneuverable!

Sorry in advance if it’s too high priced for what you’re looking for to give your Mom.

Hope this helps.. it’s a nice vacuum for the price and very easy to use and operate. Best of luck to you!

Oh....sorry....did not realize you wanted bagless. Does your mom have any carpeting to clean? Or does she only have bare floors?

I haven't heard of the Black and Decker Upright, it looks interesting.

The Hoover Air vacuums look pretty good.

Also may want to check out the Kenmore Elite Crossover Max and Elite Crossover Ultra, although they're more expensive.

I'll defend the black and decker air swivel. I have had one for almost two years and use it all the time. It is very lite and easy to use, picks up well, and is relatively easy to maintain. I agree it isn't the best for thicker carpets and the attachment it comes with is pretty bad. But for the price it is worth a look, I love mine. Simple, lite, cheap.

If you were willing to spend a bit more I would look at the hoover air series, I have had several and they all perform well. Generally not bad vacuums, although I ended up selling them all as they weren't the best suited for my needs. They also have some good deals for refurbished ones on hoover's website.

I wouldn't mind trying one of those dirt devil razors. On paper it looks like a good deal.

Looks like I'll stay away from the Black+Decker Air Swivel.

@HonestJoe68 Perhaps I should check out that Dirt Devil Razor. It sounds like a good deal.

@eurekaprince My mom has mostly carpeting in her apartment.

@fan-of-fans Those Kenmore Elite Crossover vacuums are a little expensive. Plus, we don't go to Sears.

I'm leaning towards one of the Hoover Air vacuums, particularly the Air Steerable.

Sounds like your best bet is the new Hoover React QuickLift UH73300 - it did pretty well in recent Consumer Reports tests. The Kenmore Crossover did just as good but it has a longer cord, if that is important in your search.

Post# 385894 , Reply# 13   2/12/2018 at 12:18 (2,236 days old) by HonestJoe68 (Mansfield, Ohio)

Hello @eurekaprince!

I felt the same way as you about the Hoover React Quicklift and I ended up buying the similar React Professional Pet Plus Upright UH73220 and LOVE IT!

It’s super easy to empty, maintain (the cyclone comes apart easily to clean) and it was affordable. I also LOVE the extra long, very flexible hose, it’s super easy to use all the attachments and I find I like the baseboard and bare floor tools a lot.

So then I wanted to add the Hoover React Powered Reach Plus... totally different story and I actually disliked it so much I returned it! The hose felt like it was Two foot long and very stiff! The design team at Hoover Failed when they put the hose on one side of the power plant and the cord on the other.. so when you removed the powered lift away the cord was Always in the way, hanging in the middle when you’re trying to use the lift part. Lastly it was VERY heavy, stiff and harder to steer.

Anyhow, good choice on the Hoover React Quicklift and Amazon has it on offer for $163. So maybe that would work for niclonnic’s Mom? The barefloor and carpet REACT part is very convenient too and it’s worked 100% perfectly on all my flooring. I’d recommend it too or the Dirt Devil Razor, either are very nice.

One more point.. my opinion is the Black and Decker Air Swivel is an ok option too. No disrespect to @Mike811 as I understand his points, but I’ve had fun using my B&D Air Swivel.. mine has the HEPA filter, and I’ve got many types of carpet and area rugs and it’s done quite well for me.

No matter what you choose niclonnic I’m sure it will work out and that’s super nice of you to help your Mom out! I hooked my Mom up with about four Vacuums from my collection to help her out. She’s disabled and likes her Shark Rocket Powerhead simply because it’s Lightweight and low to the ground.

Hey maybe a Shark Rocket Powerhead for your Mom niclonnic.. they are $99 bucks on QVC now... just a thought, I added the link. They are Swivel easy maneuverable and easy to use. I hope this helps!

The verdict

niclonnic's profile picture
I could settle for the Hoover React QuickLift, but I don't think my mom will use the detachable canister.

Maybe I should just buy the Black+Decker Air Swivel.

The Shark Rocket Powerhead looks nice, but it's a floors-only vacuum.

Keep in mind the React models cost a little bit more because of the detachable feature but from what I hear, reviews are mostly positive so I don't think you could go wrong with those.

The Air Swivel line up sounds and looks nice. But however, Black and Decker from what I heard discontinued them and parts could possibly be hard to come by in the future.

Shark doesn't sell repair parts to anyone really except for sending the vacuum back to Shark and fix it themselves.

Biggest complaint what I have with the Black and Decker Air Swivel is lack of height adjustment (hard to push). Seems like this new Power Swivel has it now. BIG improvement in my book :)

Is the choice to go bagless yours or hers? Not all vacuum bags are expensive, especially if you buy them online. For a small carpeted apartment, perhaps the cheap vacuums will suffice.

If it were my mom, I'd go to a vacuum store and see what used models they have and you can try them out. There is no sense in overpaying. :) I bought an Oreck Platinum Pilot swivel vacuum at a thrift store for $20 and it has worked flawlessly for over a year and the bags are dirt cheap. In addition, it glides effortlessly across carpet.

The bagless choice is both of ours.

I've never been to a vacuum store. I have been to thrift stores, especially Goodwill stores, but I haven't found any vacuums that interest me.

Fair enough, but you should definitely visit a vacuum store and see if they have any swivel type models.

Hi @Mike811

Wow I totally missed that.. mine pictured has a very nice carpet height adjustment so I found it easy to push, even on my plush carpet.

So thanks for clarifying and again, I meant no disrespect to you or anybody.. just throwing in my two cents! Lol

Thanks everybody for making me feel welcome here and I value all your opinions!

@niclonnic I would definitely stick with Hoover if you want a Bagless machine on a budget then.
A few major advantages with them.
Heavily discounted often
Local service centers for warranty!
Parts availability.

Though the idea of bags being more expensive than Bagless with filters is a false notion that's been proven over and over again.

@niclonnic definitely a good now do you just make sure you plan on changing HEPA filter about every 3 to 6 months they're rather inexpensive$10-20 the cotton filter that's washable washes clean when you're done vacuuming very very well. The Cyclone is also easily broken down for cleaning.
I used one of these as the store vacuum for about a year .

@niclonnic

Hi!

I have about 25 Hoover Vacuums and I totally forgot about the Hoover Air Steerable.. Great choice too!

Not to make your choice harder but I got an email from Dirt Devil today and I want to share with you my 20% off sitewide coupon code! I put the Dirt Devil Razor in the cart and the code took 20% off the price.

So if you still want a Hoover Air Steerable, that is totally cool but I thought I’d share with everyone so if anybody wants a Dirt Devil they can save 20%.

This 20% code ENDS 2/19/18 so hurry if you want to use it! Enter “LUV2SAVE” promo code at checkout. It’s a Valentine’s Day promo.

Thanks, again I’m not trying to persuade you to buy a Dirt Devil.. just sharing my code. I get them all the time and I’m a Platinum member for Bissell and Dirt Devil and Hoover also give me an automatic discount where all my purchases are always 20% off with free priority shipping. Fun perks of being a collector. Shark used to do that and loved me but they did away with favoring repeat customers.. so they treat me the same now, which is frustrating as I’ve bought so much.

My favorite is Dyson, I own so many Vacuums, fans, the fan heater and so on, when I call Dyson they fall all over me and I always get free shipping and discounts of 10 to 30% off.. Dyson is the only company to give me free Vacuums too, I’ve received three free Vacuums so far, the DC65, V6 Absolute and the V6 Mattress. Even though I also have the latest Small Ball Multi Floor and the Ball Animal 2.. I don’t use my Dyson very often, they are more of collectibles. I do LOVE and use often my V8 Absolute.. very nice cordless!

I’ll share any of my future discount codes if anybody thinks that would be helpful? Just let me know.

Thanks

My two thoughts are:

1. Any reason for bag less over a bagged machine?

2. Wouldn't you want a machine where the motor unit is on the floor (like a Hoover Windtunnel as an example) and not having yours or her arms and back supporting the weight of the machine like many of the bag less machines?

1. The reason I want bagless is for the convenience factor. Bags have to be purchased, thrown away etc. I'm not fond of that.

2. I'm not sure what you're talking about. Most vacuums, including bagless, have the motor unit on the floor.

Post# 386744 , Reply# 31   2/25/2018 at 22:40 (2,222 days old) by kirby519 (Wisconsin)

Cleaning filters and cyclones isn't what I would consider convenient but if you do more power to you.

As for the motor unit. Some of what is being described is just the power head is resting on the floor. Therefor most of the weight is in the upper part of the unit adding weight on the handle that the user has to support. The motor is in the upper part of the unit.

On a Hoover Windtunnel, Kirby or Eureka Sanitaire vacuum the motor unit is the base of the machine. Therefor most of the weight of the machine is on the floor and the user supports the handle and dust compartment/collection system.
