Today is a very special day for me.

Exactly 10 years ago today, when I was 13 years old, my dad and I went to Target and he purchased a Dyson DC07 Animal upright vacuum cleaner for $499.99. We were needing a new vacuum after our Bissell Cleanview had its handle release pedal broken. We needed something more reliable and expensive, so we went with Dyson, which I've had an eye on for a few years.

We brought the Dyson home, unpacked the box and put it together, which was an easy process. After assembly, it looked so shiny and beautiful. Then the time came to finally unwrap the cord, plug it in and turn it on. The first thing we noticed was how noisy it was. But it was so powerful! We couldn't believe the amount of dirt and pet hair it picked up from our carpets. Plus, it left the carpets nice and groomed.

Little did I know that this Dyson would become the most reliable vacuum cleaner we've ever owned. It's built like a tank! It's taken quite a bit of abuse, and it still works just as well as the day we've bought it.

The Dyson remained in use until the summer of 2013, when my dad received a Hoover WindTunnel 2 Rewind Pet for free through the Amazon Vine program. I began using that instead of the Dyson, which was pushed to the side as a secondary vacuum. Then, in late May of 2014, my mom announced that she was divorcing my dad, and needed a vacuum for her new apartment. So, despite my objections, she took the old Dyson DC07 Animal, even though she doesn't have or want pets. And despite multiple attempts, I unsuccessfully tried to convince her to buy a new vacuum.

Today, 10 years later, the Dyson is still alive and works just like it did a decade ago. My mom still owns it. Man, what a beast it is!

Here is a picture I took of it last week. Happy birthday to this amazing vacuum cleaner!

Hopefully you've done the clutch and filter maintenance that does look good for its age.

Actually...

This Dyson still has the original clutch; from what I understand, replacing the clutch on one of these vacuums is a difficult task.

As for filter maintenance, I washed the pre-motor filter every 6 months while the vacuum was in my possession. Nowadays, my mom doesn't wash it. The HEPA post-motor filter is still the original one. I also understand that replacing that filter is difficult as well.

Despite this, the vacuum still works fine. No weird noises or anything.

Replacing the HEPA filter is pretty easy. The clutch needs to be done with the special tool. Definitely can be quite Troublesome if you've never done one. the expected life from Dyson was 2 to 4 years on the clutch. Dyson wants published on their British website that they had a 5 year lifespan . typically they last longer this is a prime example of engineered obsolescence not working the way it was supposed too . Thank you for sharing.

No problem

I'm glad that my Dyson was able to last so long without any problems. It definitely lived up to Dyson's claim of "no extra costs."

Maybe I'll replace the HEPA filter and clutch someday.

I highly dislike these vacuums. Every one I have seen has been nasty, smells like puke, has broken plastic bits, and the shitty brushroll is bald. The damn cleaner head never sits flat on the floor, and my dog's ass has more airflow than these damn things.

This makes me wonder how people use their Dyson DC07's. Mine was used in normal household conditions with cats and dogs, and we've never vacuumed up anything damp. The brushbar gets cleaned regularly. As for the cleaner head issue, yes, I am aware that you have to push the head down after reclining the vacuum. Otherwise, it'll be at an angle and won't pick up anything. Certain vacuums, including Kirby's (never used one), have their quirks.

Happy New Year!

I have used one, and it is a large, noisy, dirty and heavy beast! The filtration is a joke on those. You got a foam filter and then a HEPA filter that never made a proper seal on the one I used regularly. Sometimes, the cleaner wouldn't stand in the upright position because of that damn piece towards the base. They always crack and break, and 9 times out of 10 you will break one of the snaps while attempting to access the HEPA filter. Don't even get me started on that brush. It does nothing. It doesn't agitate the carpet. What it does do is rip carpet fibers up. These things had so many problems it's a wonder Dyson is still around today. I'd take my Kirby any day over these things.

Tell it happy birthday

Then go to Walmart, buy a $39.95 after Christmas Bissell, and go trade the new vacuum to your mom for the old one she has.

More expensive doesn't equal better quality, with the exception of Kirby and Royal, but 70% of their cost is retail markup and salesman swindling. My mother got conned out of $2,000 for her Kirby Ultimate G, and both her and the salesman got drunk in our house. Pretty sad.

I just got a Dyson DC...something or other in October. It's one of the tiny ones that looks like a kid's toy. I paid $30 for it, and the only thing that was wrong was there was a clog jamming the knob that changes over from brushroll to hose.

People throw out Dysons as soon as they clog up because they don't know how to maintain them. You can get these vacuums for pennies today, they depreciate fast.

I've got two vacuums nearing their 100 year old mark I plan to get running again (each have been chucked out in barns since the kennedy administration). I don;t think a Dyson would be the same. Metal and cast aluminum is still superior to plastic in terms of making a vacuum last longer. People can be rough on vacuums and Dysons have so many little fragile plastic bits.

And the Dyson has an overly complex OVERENGINEERED design-it has almost 500 parts-other vacuums even Kirby have LEES than that. And most of the Dyson parts are easily broken PLASTIC!

Glad your dc07 is still working, doesn't really suprise me though. I know plenty of people still regularly using their 10+ year old dysons. I have a 12 year old dc14 that was heavily used in a bank for about 8 years. I had to replace the base plate and brushbar, but otherwise it is still original. It has been to hell and back, and I don't take very good care of it either. I use it for heavy, dirty jobs and for cleaning other vacuums out. I hardly ever clean the filter, because it almost never needs it. It has proven itself reliable and durable.

Are kirbys more durable? Probably, but this dyson, when new, was a fraction of the price of a kirby. I would hope for more than twice the price to get a better built machine. Not sure what the big deal about plastic is, kirby tools are made entirely of the stuff, not to mention vacuums from riccar, sebo, and miele.

I haven't noticed the hepa filters on any of my second hand dc07s leaking. Besides the foam and fiber filters before the motor do a good job of catching whatever manages to bypass the cyclones. If the hepa filter leaked, it would be mostly carbon dust from the motor. Most dirty fan vacuums pump carbon dust directly into the air because of their design.

I don't think the dc07 is the best carpet cleaner ever, but I consider it perfectly servicable. I don't think the brushbar is any more agressive than the average modern vacuum. The suction on the dc07 is very good, as are the tools. It certainly still beats the average modern bagless vacuum. I own several of the low end bissells, none can match the suction, performance, convinience, or filtration of these old dysons.

Paid full retail $2,000

Sounds like the alcohol clouded her judgment in several different ways.

1. No one ever pays retail. I negotiated the price of my Ultimate G to near that of what was paid for the Dyson in the op.

2. You should never drink, let alone get drunk with someone that you are doing business with, unless you are expecting a poor outcome.

All in all, sounds like she got what she bargained for.

These were my favorite of the Dyson machines, I don’t care much for the newer models. I do, however, really like the DC23 and DC22 Motörhead models.

@ Kirbysthebest

The salesman later got fired from Kirby and went to a meat salesman business, and she followed him there and ordered meat from him too, but he eventually conned her out of a few cases of meat. Took the money and never delivered, he disappeared after that. About 5 years later he was seen doing karaoke at a local bar. lol

That's been over a decade ago now, haven't seen or heard from him since.

@crazykirbydude I don't understand the Dyson haters. Mine tends to get a little dusty after use. I kinda agree about filtration. In the past, mine has given off a dusty smell for the first 5 minutes of use, and then it goes away. A lot of the times, emptying the canister has made me sneeze. As for durability, the vacuum has NOT had a SINGLE piece break. The brushbar is actually decent, but tangles up easily. Definitely not for people and/or pets with long hair.

@Kirbysthebest What is this Bissell you're talking about? I don't think my mom will like a Walmart special.

@huskyvacs and @tolivac I agree about Dyson vacuums being over-engineered. They are NOT made out of fragile plastic! They are constructed of ABS and polycarbonate, which are much stronger than other plastics. Don't believe me? Look up Dyson's testing videos on YouTube.

"Not made of Fragile plastic-"How come so many come into the vac place needing those parts replaced because---they are broken?
