Question about new Hoover Dual Cyclonic Vacuums

Hi all,

I have a question for those of you who have one of Hoover's latest cleaners (Windtunnel 2, Windtunnel 3, Elite Whole House, T-Series, etc) with the DUAL (not multi) cyclonic systems. Does hair and other debris still collect at the tip of the inner cyclone?

Years ago, I had a green and blue Hoover Fusion, which was, in my mind, was the first ever in this long line of Hoover Dual Cyclonic vacuums. It had a little round "plate" looking thing on two standoffs which was positioned directly below the tip of the inner cyclone. Presumably, this device was introduced to improve the efficiency of the cyclone. However, as a bit of a side-effect, all kinds of dust and hair would catch/wrap around it and require removal with every empty of the bin. This annoyed me.

Dual cyclonic cleaners in Hoover's current lineup appear to have this same device (and likely the same inner cyclone, even), but it has been years since the Fusion and I suppose Hoover might have changed the geometry of the cyclone tip slightly to reduce this issue. Have they solved it, or does dust still get stuck? If its all good now, I may get one of their new machines.

The answer to that question is absolutely. I knew someone with 4 kids, a cat and a dog and that damn cyclone alway gets clogged. My grandma had another one with the same technology. I think it was was called the Hoover Pet Plus Cyclonic. There are only two people who live at her house, her and her husband. I was always unclogging that thing too. Avoid these at all costs.

Hoover dual cyclonic machines include the 'plate' at the bottom of the high efficiency cyclone. This is designed to prevent dust in the fine dust collector to be sucked into the vortex finder at start up.

The reason there's hair and lint collecting there is the poor design of Hoover's shroud.

Hoover's shroud holes are pointed UP. Dyson's shroud holes are pointed IN. As dirt, lint, hair, etc. circle the shroud upon entry to the clear bin (at a tangent). Hoover's airflow going UP brings lint and hair into the high efficiency cyclone, which was NOT designed to remove those types of materials.

Contrast this to Hoover's Multi-Cyclonic design which works much better, and has a properly designed shroud.

Thanks for letting me know why the "plate" was designed into the system. I figured it must improve the efficiency of the system somehow, but I had not yet figured out that it helps out most with transient, rather than steady-state, operation of the inner cyclone.

Thankfully, many of Hoover's newer dual-cyclonic machines now have the improved shroud designs with the perforations facing "in" rather than "up". I remember the Fusion I used to own had the vertical holes, which made the system pretty miserable to empty. It also apparently allowed longer particles to make their way to the inner cyclone and wrap up around the plate standoffs. Maybe Hoover's dual cyclonic units with the improved shrouds will do better, despite having the plate at the bottom of the inner cyclone, since the long particles will never be able to reach the inner cyclone to begin with. There's only one way for me to find out, I suppose...buy one!

I always wondered what Hoover's engineers were thinking when they designed those early shroud versions with the vertical holes. CFD would have revealed this flaw. Even plain physical testing would have shown the problem immediately. Mine collected lint around the top during its first ever run out of the box. I suspect Hoover was avoiding infringing upon a patent by using such a design.
