I get bored easily...
So today while searching around for bits of Apex vacuum info online, I decided to type in Apex vacuum factory. And to my wonder...a few images popped up, including some earlier images of the previous company, The Holland-Reiger Manufacturing Company, of Sandusky Ohio. So, I have been, for the longest time, under the impression that Apex made their cleaners at the 1070 152nd street facility in Cleveland. They very well may have prior to WWII, but postwar they moved production. To that end, at least as early as 1946 if you go by research! Here are a few images I procured. There is a image on Newspapers.com (that one did not capture well as it's VERY small) that shows the factory complex, along with the vacuums and washers; stating that Apex's Sandusky factory will move 300,000 vacuum cleaners and washers from that facility for that year. So any postwar type Apex cleaners, were made here. It's unlikely that any were made elsewhere... I'm assuming that they made vacuums until Apex was bought up by White Company in 1958. The factory, was just torn down last year. You can still see the back half of the factory on Google Earth. Type In 1600 First Street, Sandusky. If you go to street view, the factory is gone. But in 2D you can still see most of what was left prior to final demolition. Heres a FUN Factoid. Check out this picture that shows the Apex facility in 1953 I've outlined it in RED, was at (Now demolished) 1600 First Street. Notice the long stretched out island above it? Guess what that was, and ended up becoming? Well it's now reffered to as "America's Roller Coast"... They hadn't even built the causeway yet (outlined in grey). That wasn't built until 1956!! The second picture is from "The Hourglass" which was Apex's factory newsletter. This one from December 1948 had the APEX Cylinder Cleaner on the back cover, with a new style Dealer Display available. The third pic is from the Newspaper.com site. This is from the Nevember 27th, 1947 Sandusky Register. You can for a fee, look at the whole article at : www.newspapers.com/newspa... |

IN the article of the newspaper, it clearly states in the text that at that point, 1947; Apex had been in Sandusky for 11 years. That would have made the plant part of Apex in 1936, not 1946 as I wrote, and could no longer change!! So it's possible, unless other information comes to light, that the facility was producing vacuum cleaners there too in 1936, along with washers!!
Holland Reiger, manufactured the Faultless Washer, amongst other brands. They clearly became a supplier/manufacturer to Apex or something at some point. The last washer catalog I found online on p interest, says Holland Reiger Cporporaton, 1940. So? ANd it doesn't look LIKE the current Apex washers..so??
