hello

I have a 1989 legend 2, the head light does not work ( no, it's not the bulb! ) i have no current going to the prong sockets.

So, my first question, does the headlight come on when the safety switch/motor isolator is not engaged?
( no nozzle or hose connected )

My second question, is where does the orange stripe wire go to? It seems to go to the rear of the commutator, which would be mains power... for a 12v bulb???

Thrid, if anyone could give me a laymans idea of how the circuit works, i'd appreciate it. ( i have only found later model wiring diagrams online, these are nothing like the circuit i have )

The Legend II uses a 120/240 volt headlight bulb.

 

If the floor nozzle or hose is not attached to the powerplant, the Headlight will not turn on when you push the power switch. Instead the small red Power Light located on top of the powerplant just behind the headlight housing will illuminate in Red.

 

The safety switch prevents the motor from turning on if the nozzle or hose is not attached to the powerplant. The safety switch also determines weather the motor runs on high speed or low speed. When the floor nozzle is attached, the motor runs in Low Speed (approx. 12,000 RPM). When the Hose is attached the motor runs in High Speed (approx. 16,000 RPM).

I am pretty sure the Heritage II wires up much like the Legend II, and uses a 12V 1156 bulb as well.

It helped me in wiring my Tradition.
I believe the changeover from 120 to 12V bulbs happened on the Omega forward. Reason being the 12V bulbs have thicker filaments and can withstand the constant vibrations better.

First, thanks for the response....

@sptyks, thing is it had a 12v bulb in it, also the is only one contact, ie, not a twin prong bulb or fitting. The bulb does not look like a recent fitting, it's kirby branded & this machine, before my purchase was serviced by kirby themselves. Very interesting about the switch.

@texaskirbyguy, well that's what i would think, but i really don't see what is stepping the the current down to 12v. As my particular problem relates to having no current at the prongs, the circuit really mkes no sense, as the orange wire is connected to the brushes, the machine works, so why no headlight current?
