I had always promised myself that any vacuum I obtained would have a HEPA quality bag (or similar filtration system for bag-less) and when I came across this 70's Custom Convertible, I was doubtful it could be done without mangling the original airflow. My goal was to find a cloth HEPA bag AND keep the vacuum as a bottom fill machine. Oh, and I wanted to accomplish this feat as cheaply as possible.
So for a whopping $2, I grabbed a Hoover Type Q bag and off I went modifying it... Bill |

I did have issues with Type C paper bags coming off the fill tube, especially after vacuuming under furniture. The solution was to add two heavy duty rubber bands below the metal spring. The back pressure with type C bags is tremendous compared to the almost no back pressure at all with the HEPA bag. The motor runs a bit better as well since some strain has been removed.
What do you guys think of this mod? At least it's a Hoover bag in a Hoover machine... Bill |

I will be testing using several different brand Hepa cloth bags when I try out my Air-Way 88 and Vita-Vac. |

Thanks so much for showing the details and explaining this creative way to use HEPA with an older machine! I already converted my Royal 886 model from a bottom bag paper to a Kirby Hepa top fill ( using Heritage tube and F style fill neck), I would have just gone your route had I known!!!! appreciate it more b/c if I get another older Royal and I"m going go your route next!

Hello wyaple and All,
I have been using these "Vacuum America Clean" F&G bag in the later Hoover Convertible with the larger outer bag. I have not found the "C" Hoover bag that is a HEPA bag. Also, with my Kirby D80 but with a generic Kirby zippered style outer bag. So the Emptor is in a box with the real D50 bag. This might not work for those of you that are Kirby collectors and of a purist nature. This might be an easier way to go? Good luck to all, Pete |
