This is a Kenmore Progressive from 2008ish. I'm not sinking any money into it. I'll let the picture do the talking...

You could

get an inexpensive continuity tester to check the hose port on the canister. Not a multimeter unless you know what you are doing and what to set it for so as not to damage it.
Just a two wire type with a light bulb for 110 volts.
If the hose power port has voltage, the hose was the culprit, and a new hose isn't that expensive. About $45. maybe less at a vac repair shop that stocks older parts.

Unless the

power nozzle caused the short.

My guess is from the pushing and pulling of the power nozzle. It's a piece of crap and I don't really want to sink money into it, as I have other machines that take priority over this, like a Heritage II that needs a fan or getting a vinyl hose for my Electrolux machines. But thanks anyway.

This doesn't happen with just Kenmore, I've seen these problems once a while on just any canister or central vacuum. My Neighbor's Hoover canister had that problem before but they ended up putting it in storage and bought something else. My Aunt's central vacuum also had that problem, she ended up getting the handle and the powerhead cord replaced. Right now my Electrolux Diplomat LX currently has that problem but luckily the handle plug or the cord didn't melt yet. There's a bunch more that I could also tell from both of my vacuum stores as well. I've got some Kenmores in my collection that's older than that white one including my Grandpa's Kenmore, they all still work just fine.

The older Kenmores with metal handle didn't seem to have this problem, but the ones with the gas pump handle seem to. Both of my mom's Whispertone canister had issues with the PN turning on and off, and I found that the plug in the handle has a plastic tab that holds it down, and when it breaks the plug moves up and down when you push and pull the PN to and fro, which causes the loose connection. Neither of hers melted but what I did to fix the issue was to glue the plug down where it should be with superglue.

I believe my parents had one of those Kenmores from about that era, but I don't recall them having the issue with the handle. They had an issue with the plug separating from the cord. I guess after so many pulls it just came off. They had it repaired at some point but the new plug didn't match the cord any longer. I think they are pretty much garbage vacuums anyways.
