Good evening, I wonder if any of you can help please.

I have searched the internet for information on how to date my Model 262 but I haven't been able to come across anything that can help.

So, I come to you lot as I'm sure there will be a few of you that know how to read this number and pull the dates out!

So, the number is D182184. And it's a Hoover Model 262.

Any help would leave me very grateful indeed,

Thanks :)

Since 1967, Hoover Ltd. had used coded serial numbers, in which the first three numbers read after the model number give away the year and month the unit was made.

For example: U10166081234, which is a model U1016 Junior Dirtsearcher model, and where "608" would translate as August 1976.

But Hoover here (in the U.S.) wouldn't use date codes in serial numbers until 1987-88. For example: "0494" is April 1994.

Thank you for your information, but I'm afraid it has left me very confused, the examples you gave are nothing like the number I have, so how would I read the one I have?

Thanks.

You will have to find some sort of data that has information for the pre-1967 Hoover serial numbers. I think Jack (VintageHoover) has one of those documents in his collection.

I am afraid that I don't know the exact date of your machine, but the Model 262 was introduced in 1939, and ceased production in 1949. Bear in mind though, that production was interrupted by the war, so the 262 was not actually made for as long as the dates would suggest.

I hope that this helps a bit, and I am sure that someone on here will be able to provide you with the exact date of manufacture.

Robin.

Thank you both for your help, I always thought they stopped the 262 in 1946?

Anyway I'll dig around and try to find someone who can help :)

Thanks!
