Hi Guys! I've been wondering about this for awhile now. I know that Premier made that black commercial upright that looked just like the G.E. uprights, but I could swear that I saw, in a catalog many years ago, a swivel-top canister that matched that upright. Anyone have any insight on this? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Toby G.

Toby,

The three Premier models that I have as part of my collection are a Green and Cream TOL Cord Reel Upright and Swivel Top Canister. And their Commercial Upright in Black, Chrome with Orange accents. There has never been a certain way for me to verify exact dates from them, as PEC nor did General Electric prior to 1972 ever put anything on the machines to date ( that I've seen) like Eureka and Hoover did...

I only have one catalog that shows the a line-up of Premier badged GE's from 1974 when Century Housewares (large catalog showroom from the GREAT LAKES area) featured them for sale, and in that; the Premier Commercial wasn't featured. At this time the machines were kinda a butterscotch color and cream color. In fact the header said something like "Premier- designed by General Electric".....

I think from most of what I have heard AND read, G.E. dumped their vacuums in 1972 OR 1974, and at that point the G.E's were that same green colors that my Premiers are. So I have always assumed my Premier badged machines were between 1973-1974. I will find the catalog later, and post a picture of the lineup from said catalog...

IN that catalog, there were three uprights and three canisters featured. Good, Better, Best style. And the small shoulder portable hose cleaner. The Commercial model wasnt there; BUT most likely ran concurrent for several years, and , sometime around 1980; the Commercial WAS featured in the J.C.Penney catalog. There wasn't a Swivel Top Canister pictured that matched tho. I've seen this catalog, and am 99% sure this is correct. Could there have been one tho? Most likely.

It seems to me that PEC put out quite a few models of the Swivel Top in both the lower powered "LowBoy Whirlwind (single fan) style" and the larger higher "Dual Fan" style. The Premier's seemed to, get cheaper and cheaper and cheaper as the years progressed, almost to a point of absurdity...and lost more and more market share as that same time happened. At some point, the uprights dissappeared entirely from print and just the cheapy Swivel top was all that you saw....

At some point they shifted to the NAVY Blue and Cream colors...which I presume was the last color scheme until Premier threw in the towel.

So yes, PEC trying to pop out anything they could to make sales MAY have assembled up a Commercial version of the Swivel Top, but I have never encountered one in person, or in print media either. So I cant give a definite on that.

I've only encountered one piece of documentation of exactly WHEN, P.E.C ( Premier Electric Comp.) finally shelved the vacuum line.

I have had various persons say as late as 1985, and as early as 1979. I had received a letter, after some correspondence with various vacuum companies; ( the letter no longer exists) from PEC around 1987 that said that they discontinued the manufacture of household vacuum cleaners in 1981, and were ONLY making parts for the replacement market at the time of the letter. They had no plans to resume "cleaner manufacturing"...so uh, I guess that is the definitive answer.

However, over in Canada one could still get a G.E. badged Swivel Top in three models including a power-head variant as late as 1982 anyway, in the same green as my Premiers are..... So WHO knows...LOL!!!

Anyone care to throw in information???
