I've been wanting a Royal Metal vac for a while now, I was looking for a 7-8 amp machine but they cost around $200. I have the opportunity to get a brand new Royal at wholesale which looks to be between $200-$250, are the 8 amp machines any better than the new machines? a lot quieter? I think a new machine at such a good price would be a good investment but what do you think?

The 10 amp Royal Everlast series are very loud 10 amp motors. I got rid of mine for that very reason. I have also had a Model 880 NIB years ago, it did not groom my plush carpet well at all and I had new carpet and was noticing the nap not being brushed up. Replaced that with a tol eureka and was very pleased.
Don't get me wrong, I do like Royals, and actually prefer the screw adjustment for infinite height instead of the 5 position on the newer models. I found that with the Everlast series the touch pedal kept hitting my foot in reverse and I usually vacuum barefoot. This is just my experience with Royal Uprights. They are much lighter than a Kirby with tech drive, but I really don't have to lift the Kirby as I have a one story condo, so that is not an issue for me as I get older. PR-21 Bud | ||

Hooverkid: What is the model # of the Royal you are thinking of getting? I don't think Royal ever made an 8 amp cleaner. The newer machines were either 7, 9, or 10 amps.
The 7 amp Royal is about as loud as the Kirby G series vacs, however the 9 and 10 amp Royals are noticeably louder than Kirby G series machines. Cleaning ability is the same or slightly better than G Series Kirby's. | ||

The machines I am considering to buy new are the CR5128Z 10 amp commercial 14" screw adjustment,CR5130Z 10 amp commercial 14" 5 position adjustment or the UR38200 9 amp residential 14" 5 position adjustment. As far as used machines go, I was looking at any model that had brush stiffeners on the brushroll which I believe are the 7+ amp models.

This one was made in December 1985, and has the 5.4 amp motor.

Hooverkid... You can't go wrong with any of the Royals you listed. They are all excellent cleaning machines, however you may want to consider these things:
The UR38200 only has a 40ft. cord. The other 2 have 50ft. cords.
The UR38200 and the CR5128Z have the Adjust-O-Rite belt covers. The CR5130Z has the rubber flip over belt cover. Having the Adjust-O-Rite option is definitely a plus because it makes it much easier to determine correct nozzle to carpet height.
Keep in mind that these 9 and 10 amp motors are quite loud.

Thanks Ben for the heads up on the Royal 880, it does look pretty nice to me, however at this time, I have an Eye Doctors and Dentist appointments, both towards the end of this month, and being retired now, I try to live on my monthly income and not dip into my savings....but I do still want one for my collection, just going to be a while longer.

Update Royal 880
Ben,
I made an offer for the Royal 880 in your link, kept going back and looking at it and just decided to make an offer and see. I got it for $90.00 plus the shipping cost. He had a make offer on it and it came back immediately and said the offer was accepted. Thanks again for finding this on Ebay with the 5.4 amp motor. I really did like mine, but it didn't perform as I had hoped and I know it had the 3amp or so motor, this should be powerful enough to make a difference. Just wanted to let you know I bought it.
