The original Hoover Convertible used an 11 blade metal fan. The newer Decades used a 6 blade plastic fan.
Either fan will fit in the machine. But the 6 blade fan is much more common to find. They are fairly sturdy too as long as you don't suck up large screws, bolts, etc. Your Decade 80 machine uses a 6 Amp motor, Convertibles generally had either 5.0 Amp, 4.8 Amp, 4.3 Amp or the original 420 Watt. All of those measures were the floor amperage. Many models had the ability to be put in a higher speed for using attachments. The best way to repair it would be to take it to an Authorized Hoover repair center. However, if you are more mechanically inclined, these machines aren't very hard to work on. It starts by taking off the bottom plate and remove belt from motor pulley. Then find two screws located on the middle underside of the unit not far above where the agitator cavity ends on either side outside of fan housing area. Flip your machine back over, with handle fully reclined--- or I find it best to rest the handle on a chair with floor head flat to the floor. Set the carpet height setting to High or Shag. Gently lift from the rear being careful around the bumper guard getting past the height adjust and handle release pedals. You'll want to remove the top bearing plate which will release the sliding height adjust indicator. Once inside there are screws holding the black motor to the gray colored base. You'll also need to remove the top bearing motor plate which will release You'll need to remove some headlight bulbs and make note of the screws. From here my best advice is to utilize a YouTube video such as this one, if you're still up for the task. You may also want to refer to www.hescoinc.com/schematics... ---- Hoover---locate your model number. Check the schematic to ensure all parts holding the fan in place go back in proper order. Prior to taking off the fan, it may be advisable to remove the motor carbon brushes to avoid any possible excess wear or damage to them while taking fan off. The carbon brush connecting wires are located behind black caps which depending on the time period made may or may not be screwed or just push on. Take note which carbon brush went to which side and keep the direction it was in. They will wear best being re-installed that same way as they have taken proper shape for best wear to the commutator. If you decide to do it yourself-- Good Luck, be careful and take notes/ photos of layout to ensure proper screws go back to proper location. If you decide to take it to a vacuum shop-- I'm positive they'll do a great job and they may even go as far as to grease your motor bearings too and give the machine a good check over. It all depends where you go and what you ask for/ tell them and/ or what there standard vacuum service includes! CLICK HERE TO GO TO Durango159's LINK |

I have a few of the replacement 6 blade fans here in my shop. If you like I would be happy to install a new one on your Vacuum. Just cover the cost of shipping and the cost of the fan. Or, if you like, I would be able to give the motor a complete rebuild for the cost of shipping and parts You can contact me via email Andy Rousonelos Vacuumlad1650@gmail.com |
