The other day when Arlee was cleaning his room he asked me to bring him a vacuum cleaner. I got out my gray wrinkle-finish factory rebuilt Model G for him. He fussed about it being so heavy. He doesn't like uprights but needed a motor-driven brush for the carpeting in his room so he went ahead and used it, complaining the whole time.

So today I got to thinking when I saw one of my Electrolux E-Automatics in the hallway, one without a cord winder. It weighs a lot less than a Model G and it's easier to maneuver around a smaller room. I thought that might be a nice one for him to use. So I went down to my workshop and poked around and found one of those top trim pieces with the power nozzle outlet and installed it on the E-A.

At first, I set it up with a long-single-cord power nozzle from a Model F, thinking it would be fun to imagine how some nice housewife decided to upgrade her E-A when the Friendly Electrolux Man came around to show the "All New" Model F.

In my imaginary role play, she told him she certainly did not need a new vacuum cleaner since hers was only a year old! But when he demonstrated the power nozzle and said he could adapt her E-Automatic for one,  she bought one. He suggested a new hose as well, but she, being frugal-minded, kept her original hose since it was "still perfectly good."

But, then, I came to my senses: For practicality's sake, I set up the E-A with a more flexible, vinyl electric hose and a newer power nozzle with a headlight -- easier to use, more powerful, and less for Arlee to grumble about! (I can play "The Frugal Housewife" when I use it! hahahaha) He gave it a test drive down the hallway and said he likes it.

So there it now sits in the hallway, our current "weekly driver" -- or until the novelty wears off. :)

More about the E-A Power Nozzle Upgrade

The metal trim piece that I installed on the Model E-Automatic is an after-market upgrade. It comes with a cutout for a PN port, the port and the wiring.

Actually, that's where the PN port originally was for the Model F.

When the Model R came out, they moved it to the bottom-right side just in front of the front wheel.*

When the G came out, they moved it to a cutout in the bottom of the front cover.

When the 2nd version of the G came out, they moved it back to the bottom-right side, in front of the wheels. The front wheels were moved back a couple inches.

Much later, when they started selling "Factory Refurbished & Reassembled" Models A-E, F, G & L in the early 1980s (as last-gasp sales), they moved it back up into the top trim piece, presumably because that area is easier to get to, or perhaps for consistency's sake. I dunno why, really.......

*I used to have a Model S with the same PN arrangement as the R, and painted in the correct Model S color.

Making what you need with what you have and the knowledge to do it. Pretty neat there.

Good morning Mr Lester,
I have a few questions for ya.
1.Is that white sheath original for the original PN1 or would it have been grey?
2.Did the earliest of the R have any of the matching AF PN1 and attachments or did they ONLY have the turquoise?
Last but not least would you happen to know where I might find a long one piece cord for the earlier PN?

I love reading your Electrolux posts! I'm glad Arlee has a vacuum that he can enjoy.

@Kirbyvertibles...

1. Of the few Model F power nozzles I've seen over the years, some had gray sheaths and some had whites ones. It may be one of those transitional design changes. I will say, the Model F that the PN1 in these photos came from was in immaculate, practically brand-new condition. So it seems unlikely that the sheath would have been replaced. See first three photos below.

2. That's a good question. The Model R came out in 1958 before the Model G, but all the ones I've ever seen (that were still in original condition) had attachments with turquoise accents. The Model R hose was unique btw, different from both Models F and G. See last three photos below.

3. Just keep looking.
