I'm wondering if these really work to repel pet odors. I see two part numbers though: 202816A and 202916. Don't know what the difference is...

They seem to help with the Oreck brand. I have also used them in the Electrolux Silencer.

Then there is Fabreeze for those that have gone "nose blind".  ;-)

No real odor issues here, unless a bagged machine has sat unused for months with debris in the bag, then I hit it with the washer scent pellets

I have a few packs of those-but haven't tried them.I bought them for my collection more than anything else.I don't have any pets.If I try one will have to see if it blocks the odors of the washer scent pellets.

I believe the 2 part numbers are for either a 2 pack or six pack. I've not bought any to sell yet. I'm curious. I have 5 Pugs so I should see if they work

Luckily, no need at my house, either

I was at my uncle's the other day. My cousin's hubby was vacuuming out a cabinet after a flour spill. He turned on the H. Windtunnel (bagless)... the 'scent of dog' almost knocked me out. Of course, the BIG THING WE ALWAYS HEAR when asked about changing the FILTER is . "There's a filter"? But, it's bagless....just empty the bin. Um, NO!
And, that, boys and girls, is lesson ONE w/ a bagless vacuum cleaner.

Slightly off topic but it reminds me of when I was cleaning out my fridge the other day. It would make sense to have an actual replaceable fridge filter inside the fridge as Im always buying hanging charcoal things every couple of months so that stronger smelling foods don't affect others. Sometimes stronger smelling food like onions are no good even in air tight Tupperware style boxes, especially if they take up too much room.

Just goes to prove really that even open spaces require filters at time to freshen the air, or keep it clean smelling. Do American fridges have such a thing as standard?

Not that I have seen in any fridges? I always wrap mine tightly in cling film, never had smell issues

Most Fridges Here in the US Over $1000

appear to have a charcoal filters in them that I've seen in the last 5 years or so. I bought a new fridge in 2015 with an ice maker and it came with a charcoal filter. You change it every 6 months and I must say, it works very well, no odors at all!

So it doesn't appear that many have tried these new Kirby charcoal HEPA bags then. Hmmm, I'll have to get some soon and report back.

I can solve any odor problem in the vacuum bag with two cotton balls and 3 drops of Odors Away on each cotton ball. (Odors Away is the same idea as Kirby Odorific)
Suck up said cotton balls and foul musty odors are gone.

All of which are readily available for less than the cost of one vacuum bag. I see no need to pay an outrageous some of money for a special vacuum bag. When the solution is so incredibly simple.

So what happens if say the paper bag rips in a Kirby? Surely these synthetic ones minimise rips as well as have added charcoal.

To date I have never had a disposable bag rip open in my Kirby. No matter what I sucked up in it. It is just another gimmick to justify charging an outrageous price for a vacuum bag.

Ripped paper Kirby bag-A GSix brought to the vac shop here-outer cloth bag hard as a rock. The vacuum could even still pick up.The story is-the owner of the vacuum was ill for several months and her grandkids did the cleaning. They didn't seem to know the bag in the Kirby has to be changed when full.It was so full it BURST in the cloth bag.Was a mess to clean it out.The Kirby has more than enough power to burst the paper bags if they are pushed. That is the only time I have seen a blown Kirby disposable bag.

Kirby519 - as above.

So, no its not really a gimmick. Also if Kirby do produce synthetic dust bags that have NO charcoal in them and have a plastic grid catch, the bags in theory could be washed out provided that they have sufficient space in which the synthetic dust bag can be turned inside out.

I would like to see a reinforced area in the Kibry or Royal Filtrete bags for that matter where the debris is blown into the bag-often with great force. So far the Kirby and Royal Filtrete bags have held up well.Meile Filtrete bags have these areas. But then again-the Filtrete material these bags are made of are pretty tough. When the Filtrete bags I use are full-I just throw them out-they are cheap enough for this considering how full you can pack them.Meile does show a video of a pound of nails picked up into one of their bags that has the reinforcing area without any damage.

Steve (Kirby 519), you posted exactly what I was thinking. Odors Away is a great product IMO and smells just like Kirby Odorific of yesteryear. I was disappointed when Kirby changed the formula and pleased when I found OA. It can be purchased at Ace Hardware in the US. It can be used in any vacuum except a Rainbow. I've found it isn't good for the plastic on the water basin.

A few drops placed on a piece of paper towel and put against the air return on the furnace lightly scents the air in the house too.

Those scented products such as OA and Kirby Odorific just add a scent to the bad smell. They don't neutralize the odors like charcoal does.

I don't have any odor problems in my home. We have one shorthair cat. The plain Kirby filtrete HEPA bags work fine for me, but if I did have any odor problems I would definitely purchase the Kirby Charcoal lined filtrete bags for my Kirby's because I know that charcoal removes odors, it does't just add a scent on top of the odor like Odorific does.

The cost is not an issue for me because Kirby bags hold so much dirt. I can go at least 6 months between bag changes.

I Should Probably Clarify My Interest In These Bags

wyaple's profile picture
Like sptyks said, charcoal will actually kill the order, but many other methods simply mask it and then only for a short time. I want to see if these bags will eliminate any odors for a number of months.

At this time, I notice a very slight odor emanating from from all my HEPA cloth bagged machines after about 2-3 weeks of vacuuming regularly. Unfortunately, it would take 6-12 months to fill one of these bags, and I find myself reversing the bags and using a leaf blower to blow out all the debris including all fine dust on a monthly basis.

I have ordered a starting supply of 6 bags and in the coming weeks, will report my findings here. In a quantity of 6, they run about $4.50 apiece with shipping.

Bill,

You obviously didn't check the Kirby Needs Store for your Charcoal lined bags. The cost of a six pack of genuine Kirby charcoal bags is $15.29 making the cost per bag about $2.55 each which is definitely worth the cost IMHO.

You should always check here first for all your Kirby needs:

I have not used the charcoal bags yet

But will try them soon. I do want to say that I second sptyks that Kirby needs is a great ebay seller. Highly recommended seller.

Sptyks, that price you quoted is inacurrate

wyaple's profile picture
While I love purchasing most of my Kirby parts from Kirby Needs over the last year, he does charge shipping. I'm sorry I missed his sale price though...

His price is $15.29 + $4.40 = $19.69 or $3.28 per bag. BUT, those lower prices on these charcoal bags means that people who need them won't be paying much more for them than the regular white cloth HEPA bags. The funny thing is I still see sellers attempting to charge $7.50 per bag for 202816 (2-pack).

I can't wait to try them out and see just how long they can really neutralize odors.

Got My Six Pack Today

wyaple's profile picture
Of charcoal bags of course! I'll start using them tomorrow but before I start filling one of them up, I'll take some fresh bag airflow measurements and compare these to the standard white HEPA bags. Did anyone notice that these charcoal bags don't have any HEPA markings anywhere? Not even on the plastic display bag? I'm wondering if these aren't HEPA rated?

I do see they say "Micron-magic" this is Kirby's designation for HEPA type filtration.

Charcoal vs. White HEPA Bag CFM Tests Reveal

wyaple's profile picture
At Hose End (High Motor Speed)
White HEPA Cloth 4075 ft/min = 106.4 CFM
Charcoal HEPA Cloth 4016 ft/min = 104.8 CFM

Difference of 1.6 CFM at the hose end

At Nozzle End (Low Motor Speed)
White HEPA Cloth 5610 ft/min = 146.4 CFM
Charcoal HEPA Cloth 5571 ft/min = 145.4 CFM

Difference of 1.0 CFM at the nozzle end

As you can see, Kirby has managed to introduce another layer of charcoal filtration to the bag without any significant airflow loss. Yay!

All tests were performed with a G4 that had a freshly laundered outer bag.
