Founded this extremely rare hoover celebrity vacuum cleaner a week ago. I got a couple of old vacuums for free including this. There is a lot of job to do. It powered up but it sounds awfully loud. There is a quite lot of wattages 1250w which is rare thing in 1970's vacuum. This is eqipped with a some kind of manual on/off swich on handle but it's broken. It would be nice to get some more information of this.

If my memory serves me right, Hoover Celebrity II Elite, whit variable speed control . I think it came whit a power head since the switch on the hose .Loud motor probably the bearing or needs lubricant .

We had this in the UK in another colour. Brown and yellow. The switch is operated by air pressure which forces the microswitch in the cleaner to open and close. Rather a complicated set up for not much advantage. UK version had no power head. The cleaning head had a huge dial on it to which the user could direct suction to the side channels.

Here in the U.S.

The Celebrity was introduced in 1974. There were only 3 models to start. The Celebrity "Custom" was the top of the line Celebrity, which had all the features of your blue model, just in a diffrent color combination. Then in 1976, the Celebrity II arrived with the new, Hoover Powermatic Power nozzle. There was not a variable speed Celebrity till 1979, when they added the two speed motor. On the Celebrity II Elite, all the controls were air powerd, meaning they were just to realease suction at intervals, and did not control the speed of the motor.

The motor on the Celebrity was loud beacuse it was the MOST powerful cansiter cleaner Hoover produced. It nearly drew 12 amps! They were the Noisest THINGS!!!!....lol...But they were one Hoover canister that pulls 90 on the tester, and does its job well!

I love Celebrity units!!!

The color on yours looks gorgeous!!

Hoover had several units of the Celebrity series! The first ones actually floated on a pillow of air produced by the exhaust of the machine. There were many models with power nozzles and straight suction only models. I have only come across one Celebrity Custom machine that had the on/off switch on the hose handle. Very neat setup!!

Here is my Celebrity II Elite. If functioning properly your machine probably would sound like mine-minus the power nozzle which towards the end of the video attached to this link, I do have the unit running in only straight suction mode.

These units are very powerful. My unit is 12 Amps, and I believe that the power nozzle motor is 1.9 Amps of that, making the suction motor 10.1 Amp respectively.

The motors on these are dual stage. They are very serviceable if you have the skills and tools for working on a dual stage motor. I sent mine off to a professional to have it completely serviced with motor bearings greased, etc. about 3 years ago and it purrs gorgeously ever since!!
