Hey all first post,
My mom has had her electrolux since new in I believe 1982. It is a 1453 special model. It is simple and fairly light and she still loves it.

After a long cleaning session a couple week back, the vacuum began dying after a few minutes of use. It runs normally for a few minutes. Then tone changes/motor speed drops for maybe 15-30 seconds, then it drops the rest of the way in about 5 seconds to nothing. Toggling the switch at that point does nothing. After cooling down for a while, it runs again for a few minutes. Rinse and repeat.

Any ideas? Brushes shot? I was hoping to get an idea before I take it apart. Changing bags has had no effect. The electric carpet brusher died long ago, so no feedback there.

Funny story about this vac...she told the door to door salesman outright that it was nice and all but she couldn't afford an electrolux - not with mortgage payments. So he had gone back to his station wagon and came back with this bare bones special model. He said it had same motor without the fancy. It is also fairly light. I think she paid around $270 or so.

Soon thereafter we were invited to the neighbor's house; the neighbor lady wanted to show off HER new electrolux. The salesman had told her how my mom bought one and loved it...so the neighbor lady bought one as well. The neighbor already had an older electrolux on metal runners which she loved. This new one was the top of the line model, and bigger/heavier/ bulkier. When the neighbor found out she paid more than twice as much as my mom did, she was mad for quite a while! I think she went back to using her old one! Small town life...

Anyway, any help on this dying motor would be appreciated!
JR

Okay. I will try to find some disassembly instructions. Looks like brushes run $15 to $20 per pair, but I'm not sure on the motor spec. I see 1205 and Super J. Any idea which it would be? The backside of the door says "7.7amps with power nozzle, 5.5amps without".

I'll probably pull it apart first and make sure all else looks good and confirm brush type. $20 seems steep for a pair of brushes. I see whole cannisters on ebay starting around twice that.

I would check the motor

I would disassemble and service the motor. More than likely your brushes might still be good, they're probably sticking in the housings. The housings need to be cleaned, as any dirt and carbon build-up will make the brushes stick. A 1453 takes 1205 brushes as the motor is same as a 1205. It's pretty rare to see worn out brushes in a 1205 motor. Clean the motor and fans and brush housings. The brush housings can be cleaned with an old brush and a little lime away, rinse and dry thoroughly. For more service tips give me a holler. Electrolux Dude
