Dave from Statford came by today for some thrift-storing and vacuuming so without further adieu here's some pictures from my cam. He took some too but inadvertently deleted them but will have more tomorrow.

Here's Dave testing out my Kenmore

Daves Master vacuum he got not too long ago. Made for the Canadian Tire stores here in Canada. We think it pulled about 72 on the gauge.. the Royal and Electro H above both pulled 75 & 76.

Dave saw the potential of this lovely double breasted Hoover floor polisher at the Sally Ann under a thick layer of black grime. Well, I found it's true beauty after a quick wipedown with magic Eraser. The only rust is on the handle yoke, runs great and the cord in excellent condition.

Pete's Kenmore

OMG! I believe that is the Kenmore canister my mother had when I was a child. (Or, it's very, very simliar. The power nozzle looks a little different than I recall.) It's the first time I've seen one on this site, or since childhood for that matter. Would you mind posting a few more "close ups"? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Mike

Yeah, so not only did I delete the pix of Pete piloting the Lewyt 120 Big Wheel and the field testing of the Turbine Carpet Brush heads I brought along but now the camera battery is dying and dumbo Dave forgot the battery charger. Pete is now the official papparazzi of the micromeet...

In spite of my unpreparedness, I also got a second Westinghouse Model FW-81 with the User manual and Recipe Book. No bowls or juicer this time. Motor's making scary grinding noises so this one will get a complete teardown before it's turned on again.

"The smart, streamline design of your Food Mixer means more than beauty! There are no cracks or crevices, no bumps or humps, to collect dirt. Just wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Ribbed bowls are easy to hold, even when hands are wet or greasy."

Hi Scott. I have mixed feelings about the Floor Mate. Naturally I like it for its gizmo fun factor but reality wise it's just too fussy to set up and clean after use. I can mop the floors faster with my Vileda mop and bucket in not much more time than it takes to get the Floor Mate up and running. It's a very methodical method of using it as well, slow and measured back and forths often having to let it sit on a sticky spot to scrub. It does have the dry vacuum ability which is a plus.

Turbine Tool Sextet Whirl-off Competition.

aeoliandave's profile picture
The votes are counted and the results are in:

If it ain't got a metal flywheel turbine it ain't worth attaching to a vacuum source.

The 3 items in the front - Sunbeam Turbine Brush, Preco Power Brush and the Filter Queen Pow-R-Polisher (on exhaust) - performed magnificently with a satisfying windup whine without bogging down in the plushxurious deep carpet nap.

The back 3 - Miele, Generic and the Compact Cyclonic Turbinette - all with plastic turbine wheels, clattered up a racket and ground to a halt as soon as you began pushing them. I think they are meant only for smooth floors and jute/sisal weave carpet matting.

Headed out briefly to a local downtown Sunday Flea market and wouldn't you know it - I found both the small and large clear glass banded mixing bowls for the Westinghouse Streamline Mixer posted above. My luck!

Although there's nothing really special about these old Kenmores I kinda like them. They work well, they're not quiet but they're not noisy either. This one is much quieter on low and seems to work just as well

Grand opening. the foot operated on/off switch on front. The more deluxe Kenmores always usually had a bigger foot switch across the full width and would hide the tool sets under a lid cover

Lots of fun stuff and fun times had by all, it seems! Glad you found your Westinghouse bowls. I had one of those for a while.

Fun to see the vintage Kenmore in such nice condition with all its pieces. That is a nice size power nozzle, Sears really had something with its cleaner line for many years. I remember the crevice tools with the flared edge. Never realized it slid into the side of the cleaner.

Do I spy a Benz on the other side of Dave loading up? :-)When I saw snow in the outdoor picture, it took a minute for me to process. I'm just so out of practice in seeing it, LOL

Still wish that Kenmore made the flared out crevice tool. They work great for vacuuming the car!

In regards to the Kenmore, mother bought one in 1974, a little larger than this, green color. Unfortunately, the filtration level is rather dismal. Don't laugh, but this is what I did to improve things. Years ago electrolux had the iota bags, 99% efficient at 0.5 microns. I cut the cardboard on the top and bottom of the lux bag to the point where it meets the bag, about 3/4 of an inch from the bottom, I scored the cardboard, and bent it back. The bag will now fit into the Kenmore chamber, and better filtration as well.

Oh don't bring up that dreadful car. It's been the biggest and the most unreliable disappointment I've ever owned and I won't make that mistake again I guarantee you. Literally falling apart as soon the warranty ran out. Actually before the warranty ran out but at least then the warranty paid for all the repairs it kept needing. Since then I've spent almost $4000 on it and it still doesn't run properly, the bumpers fall off looking at it. The wiper motor failed. The turn signal lens casing fell off on the hiway for no apparent reason. The cruise control lever fell out. Now they say it needs another engine job. It's had two. I"m just going to sell it for parts and the new tires I put on it. It's barely been out of the driveway in over a year.

Pete...

Thank you for sharing those pics of the Kenmore canister. My mother's was very, very similar. The only differences I recall were the power nozzle, which was slightly different and the toggle switch on the back, which it lacked. I don't think they came out with the on/off switch that ran the full length of the front until a few years later.

Thanks again,

Mike

Hey Pete! Trip home took a little longer than intended...

aeoliandave's profile picture
The only place Pete & I didn't make it to is the massive junk barn place in Petrolia, which is on my way east...sorta. Since it was 3:30 when I pulled out of the driveway (left the dead, I mean discharged, battery camera behind and had to dash back for it), I figured I'd drive straight home to play with stuff.

Pete, as I passed the Petrolia exit the car just steered itself to the right and...found the place easily by the railroad station. Glad I stopped by because...

First, with all the talk about Fantoms I noticed this Fury with metallic green accents half buried in a snow pile and froxen to the ground. After scouring the inside buildings wher I found more neat stuff, I examined it and decided to free it from the ice. The guy had a newer looking Fantom in scratched up shape inside the store for $35. This frozen one seems to be all there, triple extending aluminum wand & hose great, rubber canister gaskets in good shape, Clean (new?) HEPA filter cartridge installed and it runs-ish.

So I got it for $5 to dry it out, reassemble it and see what all the Fantom Fuss is about. It also appealed to me as a demonstrator because it is narrower and lighter than the Fantom I fixed for Lena a few months back. Please forgive me, Vintage Metal Gawds.

More Westinghouse Steamliners...

aeoliandave's profile picture
The place is a bit more organized where mixers and blenders are concerned. On the shelf was a complete Westinghouse on the stand and a Dormeyer on the stand along with the usual all years of Sunbeams. No Bowls to be seen anywhere. :-( There's a heap of assorted juicer bowls and reamers, etc - at least a dozen - you'd have to sort through to find the one you need/want, and in a box beside that another Westinghouse streamer w beaters and no stand in excellent cosmetic condition. You really need to take a strong flashlight to this place to see what's what in the dark corners and under tables. Do I really need a spare standless one? Yes, I did. LOL

This is the manual that came with the one that had no bowls, that I located in clear glass this morning. I luv the shape - the Moby Mixer!

On my way out with the Fury once again my eyes were drawn sideways and I saw this standing in 2" of ice & snow just waiting to be destoyed by the snow coming in this week. I fairly leapt upon it!

So, speaking of late 30's streamline moderne styling applied to previously plain old houshold goods we present...The Kenmore Touch-O-Matic Carpet Sweeper in shaped Oak, embossed rubber and gleaming chrome.

The angle view showing off it's sensuous form. Dig that gorgeous lettering font.

The handle is also oak and has a metal ferrule with threads that screws to the hoop. The lower hoop has sprung indents that keep the handle upright at rest.

Oh yeah - $10. A paltry sum for such a cosmetic fixerupper.

Noticed late last night that the varnish coat on the oak is so dry you can flake it off as dust with a fingernail. So I will carefully remove it around the gold decaled letters, touch them up as best I can, a light sanding, a swab of golden oak stain and a new shiny protective finish. She'll gleam like new again.

The rubber bumper is held in place with 4 tack brads - it acts like a large rubber band to keep the chrome wheel caps snug against the side of the sweeper box. They are otherwise unattached. I am amazed at the general; condition of the sweeper, considering how many times it probably banged against furniture legs.

Taking a 1 hour run back west tonight after work to the Nauvoo Road to pick up Felix from his neutering adventure.

He was mighty happy to get home again. First thing he did was trot around the house to familiar spots making sure everything was as it should be, checked out the odd smell of the new pine-ish smelling Fantom Fury for a few minutes, then finished off his tour by climbing up the screen door, leaping to the attache case and ricocheted off the cat cage (probably to prove to himself, and show me, he still could)...and promptly fell asleep on the linoleum. :-) What a character.

While he was snoring I started taking the Fantom completely apart and washing the parts. Gonna make it as like new as I can. Felix joined me to watch from his favorite tabletop towel. Dang, he's adorable and smart as a whip!

They love him so much at the Vet Hospital in Watford - Pete's sister Pauline works there - they want to keep him. This is where he was socialized on a daily basis for 2-3 weeks before I got him.

Perfect timing in that another major snowstorm is due to hit southern Ontario on Tuesday.

Fantom Fury redeems itself in my sceptacle eyes...

aeoliandave's profile picture
Oh, I'm not about to start collecting them but after putting this Fury back together after stripping it down to the motor and washing everything clean it runs - loudly - and pulls a respectable 51" through the hose inlet (before the combination hose/wand is connected.

If you know this type of vacuum you know the suction is through the hose (inside of which is a two piece collapsing aluminum wand) when in the handle-up lock position. As the handle is lowered for floor use the suction is redirected to the brushroll and the hose is cut off.

The brushroll is wood with shaft bearings and the roll had swelled and dried in an oval shape, binding it to the brush supports and dividers. The bearings were wobbly loose in the wood cutout, which has a bumpy ring liner to seat the bearing. So I filled in the spaces with 5 minute epoxy, inserted the ring against it. Once just set I hammered the bearings home and left it overnight. All centered and fixed. This took up the slack in the belt which had burned through some of the surrounding plastic channel. It spins so fast I wouldn't use this vac on a polyester carpet...but then I wouldn't have a plastic carpet in the house anyway. LOL Clearly you want to empty the bin and central dust tube thoroughly after each use or the fine dust will cake up into a hard lump.

The headlight is certainly stylish but the illumination of the the floor is virtually useless. Anyway, it's a narrow path heavy cumbersome noisy vacuum cleaner that is not very maneuverable. But it does pick up dirt quite well and has interesting compact looks. Frankly I'd rather use the Hoover Dam to do the same thing better and funner. I like the collapsing wands inside the expanding hose but really, Hoover did it better...and funner. :-)

Was the FURY the first itteration of J Dyson's ideas for Fantom?

There is something to be said for vortex bagless vacuums with multiple chambers for different sized debris. I was surprised at all the microfine dust it picked up from a few passes over the hallway carpet - about an 8 feet long path. Along with all the lovely cat hair in the bin.

I'll go over all the carpets in the house just to see what it picks up then set it aside on display.

from the back, everything on board. Manual that I downloaded recommends changing the big side HEPA filter every 2 years.

This same machines with a removable swirl cone is now made for Westinghouse as is the Fantom Cyclone XT.

Meanwhile, back in Kenmore Touch-O-Matic Land

aeoliandave's profile picture
The shellac scraped off easily and i used dental tools around the gold stamped lettering. A first stain of golden oak brings out the grain nicely. Since this pic I have touched up the letters with old gold paint and gave it an overall honey oak stain. Plan is to protect it all under severeal coats of rubbed out shellac till I achieve a piano finish..ie, french polishing.

I recognized the smell of shellac as it scraped off. Also, the chrome bits are not chrome at all. It's all nickel plated steel.

I believe the use of shellac & nickle date this sweeper prior to WW2. As does the styling.

And so it goes...

Dave

I learned that from a cereal commercial! Mr. Felix has to be elated to be back with Brother and Dad, and all those vacuums too. The Fantom Project was a success apparently, and the Touch-O-Matic glows like a new Baldwin.

Fantastic job on the Kenmore carpet sweeper. Oddly they don't seem to garner much interest from anyone be it vac collectors or antique collectors or anyone. I've had a couple of nice Bissell wood ones and given them away. Kept the wooden Pneu-Vac though which you've seen. How its remained in such pristine condition for nearly 100 years is amazing.

Continuing this Kenmore Carpet Sweeper theme...

Lettering restored, nicks and nail holes filled, several; 2 layers of shellac to set the color and finally paste & liquid wax - many layers.

The newly contrived Lux-O-Lewyt polisher

aeoliandave's profile picture
The Lewyt 120 has become the vacuum of choice for the crowded kitchen workspace as it has a small footprint, pumps out lots of inches and is easily booted...er...nudged out of the way on those spin-on-s-dime wheels.

Yup, that's the Hammertone blue Turb-o-tool with the drill chuck and a lambswool polishing pad.

Kemore at midpoint all polished up. It will be reassembled tonight.

The wheels have ball bearing centers in such good shape they all four spin for over a minute.

A sleek reinterpretation of the humble Carpet Sweeper returned from the Land of Forgotten...

Joining his older sibling from Grand Rapids, Sister Bissell. Under the skin the exact same mechanism.

The late 1930s/pre WWII Kenmore Touch-O-Matic.

Thankfully (?) I have only 2 carpet sweepers so I'm not collecting them...yet. Get 3 of something and yer collectin', Mister!

I'll close this thread with something turquoise I've been searching for for a long time, the Interactive James P Sullivan aka Sully that goes with the interactive Mike. They were sold as sets. Hard plastic Green one-eyed Mikes are a dime a dozen at thrift stores but I've never found a Sully til now. He's a plush cuddly one and no doubt stays in the toybox.

Both have rather impressive animatronic faces with moving mouths, rolling and blinking eyes and touch sensors. Start one up, the other comes to life and they'll have a cogent back and forth conversation for 10 minutes, accompanied with waving arms from Mike. Sully's head turns to wherever Mike is.

Based in Markham Ontario Canada, Thinkway Toys are the folks who developed the circuitry and are responsible for all the Disney Interactive toys from Monsters Inc in 2001 and Toy Story 1,2&3.

Pete can tell ya, I spend as much time in Value Village Toy sections as I do in Appliances. LOL

Wow, great job on the Kenmore carpet sweeper, it's beautiful.

I really like the deco style of the wrap around bumper.

Love the Lux-O-Lewyt polisher set up!

Great pics Dave, Sully and Mike are cute, almost as cute as the cats. The carpet sweepers are superb, I'm partial to the Touch-O-Matic myself.

The Kenmore really captures debris well!

aeoliandave's profile picture
As does the Bissel. I tossed sawdust on the carpet and both of them swept up a clean path in one pass.

Touch-O-Matic is a sly bit of Streamline Moderne Age Marketing smooze. Sure, as soon as you touch it and send it across the carpet it does set in motion a whirling brush with an upper comb that spits the dirt into the two bins...but heck, that's what all carpet sweepers ever did. :-)

But it sure does look classy.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a Power Nozzle under that housing. Mmmmm...

Oh, never mind...

If it had a power nozzle under there it would be a Shark
