Alex, re; "sweeper"

In the USA Midwest, and parts of the appalatian mountain areas and into the mid Atlantic region, they say sweeper for vacuum like you say hoover, or "hoovering" regardless of the brand.
Also "red up the house" for clean the house.
In New Jersey, Chocolate is pronounced Cha^colate, with a short c sound.
Our southerners say their dialect is directly adapted from Britain, which there is just no way it is at all.

re; perfume smell

Put a fresh bag and or a clean filter in the machine then take it out doors and let it run fresh air through it for a few minutes.
The odor should dicipate. If it persists, try spraying unscented disinfectant spray in the bag, or dust chamber, then repeat above.
Other than that, aside from disassembling the motor housing and cleaning each part, I don't know. Maybe a Viking funeral and bon fire.

Andy,

A Lionel fan I see! Very good! Spitzenklasse!
I have a large Marklin digital ho collection, and layout.
Not Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg by any means, but my pride and joy winter hobby.

I had this problem with a Vita-vac I bought

Excellent machine, just smelled like a French Brothel.

1st as you have already mentioned, bags, and filters

2nd I wipped down the bag cage with clorox wipes

3rd, I set it on the porch and let it run for about 30 minutes (several times)

After two years the smell is still Noticeable,  buy my eyes don't water so much anymore.

I put new filters on, and cleaned the bag chamber with alcohol. the hose is next, then the lysol treatment, and finally running outside

Andy,

I have one 0 scale train set. A die cast and tinplate Marx from 1946. I only set it up under the Christmas tree.

Smelly Sweeper

When I get a smelly vacuum after I empty it I spray the inside where the bag goes with Febreeze and let it dry this seems to neutralize the odors. It works hasn't let me down yet and I have gotten some pretty doggy smelling sweepers.. Dan
