From around 2003-04. Can either the main bearing or the diffuser plate & bearing be replaced in this model? It's an S3612 specifically. When I run it, it vibrates a bit too much and it too loud even though the performance measures pretty much OK.

Really many parts can be replaced on those!! It's a motor Hoover used in many of their canister vac for the PowerMax Deluxe series and your Turbo Power 5000. You could also easily swap any motor from a Futura, PowerMax, Spectrum or Windtunnel canister into that machine!! There are usually some on eBay.

Yours is rated at 9.3 Amps. Some others system systems were rated at 9.6 Amp, 9.8 Amp and 10.5 Amp for very early ones. All Windtunnel canisters are rated at 12 Amp.

You can also take the motor apart to grease both bearings, check the carbon brushes and make the fan is clean. It's possible a former user had the bag and pre motor filter installed wrong and something went through the suction fan itself!! Also need to make sure the fan housing is secured properly. I've seen a unit where that got loose and was causing vibration!

Any parts you want are in the schematic below. I'm also attaching info for a vac shop for a gentleman that can help you with tips or could also repair and/or ship parts or an entire motor for you. He has many machines available of that style that he could get used parts from or find some new or if you want he could service your entire machine!!

I have that parts schematic and

wyaple's profile picture
when you look at the motor assembly, it doesn't give any part numbers for just the front or rear bearings. But, I will contact Chris to see what he can come up with. I think I will also look into how I've seated the motor in the main body. Maybe I can quiet it down a bit more. Thanks again for all your guidance. I'm beginning to think you and I only care about newer Hoover canisters!

There's others out there that love them but not a ton. Many like more vintage from the 70's or they love Electrolux. There are many on this site that are extremely loyal to Kirby. I've never gotten into Kirby much myself! I'm young but just find the Kirby's too inconvenient with their tool setup, heft, no brush roll shutoff, bulk, non reclining power carpet head, etc. The G series in tool mode is too obnoxious on my ears too!!

I grew up with a lot of Hoover canisters, so I've gotten used to their pigtail cord system and attachment switching. I can switch tools on the Hoovers from power nozzle to running to something else in about 5 seconds! I just find them very very convenient and reliable. My family got a Kenmore Progressive canister around 2006, it went in for Sears service twice in less than 2 years time and then I just decided to see it off on Craigslist as it still wasn't sounding great and the attachments/ power nozzle weren't convenient as nor cleaning up our labrador retriever pet hair as well as the Hoovers!! I got a Hoover Windtunnel Plus Canister and that's been in the family running perfect and never seen a repair shop since buying it new in 2008! I've replaced the belt and filters a few times and that's it!! The belts on the Hoover canisters last about a year. They may be stretch but the torque and the power of the motors is excellent, there is absolutely no noticeable power, grooming or dirt pickup difference with them even at a years time on the belts!!

I've done house cleaning as a side for years and the Hoovers just clean so well and are extremely versatile for many surfaces. To ease work, I have an extra set of wands strictly for the bare floor brush. So my power nozzles always have a wand set and my bare floor brush always has a wand set. With that I can set my cord on the wand hooks properly once and not adjust it so I don't have wear issues where the wire leaves the housing either!!

See what Chris recommends for the bearings. I've never had a problem with them!! My family has had several Hoover PowerMax/ Windtunnel canisters in the family over the years between various houses and floor levels in each plus my collection and gifting! I've only seen 2 motors go bad and that's only because my sisters X-Fiance broke 2 vacuums in one day trying to clean underneath their leaking dishwasher!!! He sucked water up into both machines. He's damn lucky he didn't electrocute!!

I've been able to grease the top bearing. I don't like taking fans off the shafts and I haven't issues so I've never ever even had to grease a lower bearing by the fans!! Not even on my parents oldest PowerMax which is their S3603-040 9.8 Amp one which was purchased in September 1997!!! The machine runs absolutely phenmomenally still! The bag door, cord winder, tool door and hose have been replaced but the power nozzle and main motor and all the rest have been fine. The other parts were replaced because it's almost 20 years old and MANY house cleaning employees that my parents have had for help over the years have abused those machines!!! One cleaning lady dropped that machine halfway down a flight of steps onto tile floor. Machine still worked fine. Just had to do some handle repair.

Pulled the sealed bearing by the fan and

wyaple's profile picture
found out it is a common 608Z. Actually, since both sides are sealed, it would be a 608ZZ. I ordered some from eBay and I hope this quiets this machine down as the vibration is not quite tolerable although all my performance and power usage measurements say all is well.

I have recently put it in my regular rotation, which means about 2200 sq. ft. of house to clean. It does pick up better than I thought and is fun to use! This is my first Hoover canister. My other two canisters are a 1997 Rainbow D4C SE PE and a 1980 Electrolux Olympia One both restored by me.

These canisters are very very good cleaners!! They use the same brush roll as the Hoover Elite uprights!

A few things I can't remember if I mentioned:

For filters I use vent duct exhaust filters. They are usually available from Home Depot or Lowe's as a 12 pack or so for like $4. I cut it to size with a scissors using the old filters as templates!

For bags I use Envirocare green package A109. They are claimed as Anti Allergan and are a synthetic cloth. For me they are close enough to HEPA and keep my bag compartments nice and clean!! $3.03 for a 3 pack from discountcleaningproducts.com!! Significantly better price than $10 for a 2 pack of Hoover HEPA bags while significantly better filtration than any paper bag whether it's Arm & Hammer, Sears UltraCare, Hoover, 3M, or blue package Envirocare. The green Anti-Allergan line beats all of those in performance. You can find a bunch of stuff from that website and order it together and then you're not paying shipping for 1 single item! Shipping is based on the whole order and usually for like 8 items, it's only like $5 shipping. So it definitely pays to buy more at one time. That website has a lot!!! The search function works quite well. You can search part and model numbers for vacuum parts, or get detergents, vinyl gloves, coffee, etc.

Scent Fragrance- I've been trying various laundry scent beads. Always kind of nice to a nice aroma coming from the vacuum. The laundry beads are nice because it's not a powder so it won't clog bag pores!

Belts- Genuine Hoover 38528-011 for the PowerMax power heads. They are available as a packaged 2 pack from Boscovs department stores or you can try Ace Hardware or Hoover website and numerous places online. YOur vac shop probably gets them in bulk and they're probably $2 for a single but you can price them out. Don't let a shop sell you on the 38528-036 Windtunnel size, that's too big for the PowerMax!

More airflow- tape off 2 holes found on front inside of the bag door. A metal material duct tape works good. They are located near the hinge.

The gas pump handle attachment lock gets was never properly measured by Hoover in my mind!! I tend to slide the lever to around the middle and that's locked in! When the hoses are brand new, sliding all of the way over is really quite snug. This will loosen in time.

Cord slack-- make sure there is a good amount of slack in the power nozzle cord between the bottom cord hook and the nozzle. YOu don't want the cord to rub on the rug much but you especially don't want it tight in any angle that the wand moves!
