After lurking the forums and researching for what could be considered a near obscene amount of time, I finally purchased my first Royal. It's a gem of a 9700 in as perfect of condition to be hoped for (excluding John's 9700). So of course I have a couple of beginner's questions that I'm hoping to get answered. There are multiple, so bear with me:

First up, this particular model 9700 has a serial number starting with "L9222.." From Ben's encyclopedia of information, I think it's safe to assume this model was manufactured in December of 1992. Is this correct?

Second, the vacuum came with a knurled belt but the part number has faded/worn away. Is this the correct belt, and what should it be replaced with? From Ben's post on this forum, '92 seems to be a split year for parts concerning belts and brush rolls . So which belt should I use: 1672260001 or 1044260001? If it helps, the brush roll has hex end caps. I asked the local vacuum shop in Atlanta and he said to use Kirby belts but I swear I've read on here that this is a big no-no. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Third, accessing the motor brushes: How are the chromed exterior panel removed to check them? Furthermore, when the brushes need replacing, where in the world do you find them?

Numero quatro, is it reasonably expected that a person mechanically inclined can access the interior of the motor case to clean, inspect, and lubricate the rear sleeve? I've read 3-in-1 SAE 30 oil is the way to go.

Finally, I know these machines are built to last, and I truly hope to get a long service life out of it. The only thing about using these vintage-ish models is parts. So which parts, if any, do I need to stock up on to avoid potential headaches down the road?

I know I'm asking a lot, but I truly appreciate your help. Like others before, I started my vacuum search with Dyson, then progressed through multiple brands finally settling on Royal. And I'm glad I did. I don't think I would have even stumbled upon the Royal brand until I started reading this forum. Truly an Alice in Wonderland moment, haha! Thanks again!

Obligatory vacuum pics will be posted when I get the chance.

Frank,

Yes, your cleaner was made in December of 1992.

If your cleaner has a ball-bearing-equipped brush roll, the 1672260001 belt would be for you.

The carbon brushes are accessible through two metal caps on either side of the motor housing that can be pried with a flat-head screwdriver.

Yes, SAE 30 non-detergent oil is recommended.
