My mother wants a new upright as her old Kenmore Quick Clean bagless started cracking apart. She is currently using her 15 year old Kenmore Whispertone canister, but wants a bagless upright because she always felt it cleaned the carpet better. Which I don't think is true, but anyway, it's what she wants. I think bagged is better, but she is set on a bagless because the bags are expensive and she doesn't want the smelly dog hair sitting in the bag and stinking next time she uses it.

I personally liked the Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive with Intelliclean and Gentlesweep that my friend has, but they are not selling anything like that anymore. I think something like the Kenmore Elite CrossoverUltra bagless would work well for my mom, but they are pricey and I question the durability. I don't want to pay that much for something I would be using my self let alone someone that might not be as gentle on it.

Other than that the red Progressive bagged is basically what she had but with a bag and no cord reel, but she doesn't want bagged. The white Intuition bagless seems nice, but the stores don't seem to have them. The new red Progressive bagless seems a bit bulky but I guess would be the second closest to what she had. Are the cheaper silver or black/green models good?

I'm not familiar with what other brands have. I know the Bissell Powerforces are a nice lightweight vacuum but I don't like and I know she would not like the messy filters they use.

So we're mainly looking for a bagless upright with a good filter system. IE, not with a filter in the collection bin or a paper filter. Her Kenmore had a nice pleated HEPA filter in a separated area that she vacuumed out with her canister vac and it held up pretty well, didn't seem to leak dust or get messy.

The top-rated bagless upright in the latest Consumer Reports tests is the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series 70120: test score for carpet cleaning is Very Good, for bare floor cleaning is Excellent and for air-flow in the hose for tool use is Excellent. But the recent tests show that there are at least 10 bagged uprights that perform better overall and are better for those users with allergies because emptying dust buns are always messy.

The Hoover 70120 is also listed as a Best Buy and is available for around $100. It also has a nice cord rewind feature.

Panasonic Jet Forces are really nice, last time I used one of those was about 4 or 5 years ago when they first came out, I tried one at my old vacuum store and it was very impressive because it uses a wood brushroll instead of plastic with very stiff brushes that beat the carpet very good. It also uses a cyclonic system like dyson with very power suction without having to loose as much suction (dyson does use panasonic motors on most of their vacuums), filtration I noticed would be pretty good as long if you would replace the filters often like every year, and one of the models does offer an attachment wear you can clean the ceiling fans really well without having reach or climb up into there.
