So I finally got the Lux D790 Royal. For me it's the "real" Electrolux. It seems very solidly built.
Yes it's heavy and was overpriced for the most "normal" people in the 90's when it was made.
But for vacuum enthusiast like me I appreciate classic look and durable structure. It's also powerful and surprisingly quiet + hepa filter option in the mid 90's. I didn't even know the hepa filtering existed back then.
Yes it got some scratches, powerhead cord is external and it isn't the easiest to maneuver. But for me it's the real thing.
I might be "a little bit" excited about it, but I am new at collecting vacuums.
I hope someone has experience about this vac.

All I know is that these are made in Sweden, maybe in Vastervik :)

Holy cow those newer Vorwerks are nice. I just can't afford those.

Its an old model, the VK130 though Mike. It was second hand but very well cared for. Nice Electrolux though!

Hepa Filter option

Hi Mike
I had a D790 in the 90's. The HEPA Filter was sold as option separatly. It was a Box with a changeable Hepa Filter in the back. As the Filter was between bag and motor, it was also protecting the motor from fine dust. The exhaust Filter is a large Microfilter.
I personally took out the HEPA filter, when the new synthetic bags came out.

Yeah the Hepa box is nice feature and it gives extra protection to the motor. But like you said using the synthetic bags there is no really need for that. Synthetic bags have good filtration compared to the paper bags. Exhaust microfilter must be the biggest I have seen.
I am very happy about the vacuum and it has quite quiet and soft sounding motor. Suction is also great and motor speed control is useful feature.
Powerhead (model ZE3) is quite interesting. Very unusual air channels in it. It works nicely on the low pile carpet, but on my medium pile shag it is very hard to push and it causes belt to slip. I am trying to figure out how to solve that problem. It has surprisingly powerful motor (150 watts) considering the brush roll size.
I have now new video of it.

re; powwr brush

only for delicate rugs. No beater bars.

Post# 345714 , Reply# 9   2/28/2016 at 16:07 (2,971 days old) by Mike81 ()

This powerhead has a small brush roll with soft bristles so it's not a deep cleaner.
It would be just nice to be able to use it on my shag rug. But it seems to fail in that without the manual height adjustment.
If I want to give my rugs a deep clean I use my upright seen in the link. It has very stiff bristles and manual height adjustment.
When I use it on my delicate shag rug I set the height to the second highest position.

Loooks like that powernozzle is missing its floor shoe.

Oh that's why it wasn't working :D

I made small modification to the soleplate and now it's working much better and it's a bit easier to push. You can see the mod in the picture. Just a tiny bit more side suction so it doesn't stick to the carpet. It actually performed very nicely and made nice grooming trails. Belt still seems to be a bit loose, so I need to order that.

Lux power head cleaning performance

Mike, it seemed to pick up well in your video. Good suction does help a great deal.
I wonder if a beefier brush roll would retrofit? It sounds like the motor can handle it.

Yes it picks up well, but the belt was a bit loose. I fitted the new Vorwerk ET 30 belt and now what a difference! No slowing down on the shag carpet. It has 150w motor so new brushroll wouldn't be a problem.

Isn't it hard to push since there are no wheels/rollers?

hard to push

It's a bit hard to push, but not harder than my Miele SEB-217 powerhead with wheels. After my small modification (small suction release holes) it doesn't stick to the carpet so much like it used to (due to the powerful suction).

Powerhead works excellent on the shag carpet! New belt and lower brushroll position now.

I would still use a HEPA filter with these despite of using synthetic bags. The newer Lux models Intelligence and S115 have synthetic bags by default but still use HEPA filters. So using a synthetic bag doesn't completely make HEPA filters useless.

The problem with the D790 is that the original HEPA filter is very expensive and there are no aftermarket filters available like there are for D820 and newer models. I have done some experiments and it's quite easy to replace the original D790 HEPA filter with and aftermarket one that is meant for Bosch/Siemens vacuum cleaners. It costs about 6 euros when the original Lux one costs 61 euros. The sides of this "wrong" filter have to be cut a bit and some glue has to be used but it can be fitted to the HEPA box quite easily (and if you modify the box it becomes even easier). The original filter is much thicker and probably is more efficient but when it comes to the price my solutuion most likely is a very good compromise (and one can replace the filter more often because it's so much cheaper than the original).

Hepa filter would certainly improve the filtration. Aftermarket (genuine not available) fleece bags are quite thin so tiny bit of dust will escape to the bag compartment. That's why I have upgraded the pre motor filter. Original pre motor filter is very coarse and it allows dust to go to the motor. I measured the bag casing for the hepa filter and 96 x 157mm is the filter holder size for the hepa filter. Bosch/Siemens hepa filter is interesting option.

The material used in the picture as an ungraded pre-motor filter might reduce the suction quite significally when used with this particular machine. There are also other materialis available that work a bit better. Though they might let more dust through.

Modding an Electrolux/Volta green HEPA filter (also about 5 euros) is possible too, but the filter needs to be cut even more than the Bosch/Siemens one (a circular saw is a good tool for that). The best situation is to have an old genuine Lux filter that can be used as a casing for the "wrong" aftermarket filter after removing the filter material. Then there is no need for modifying the HEPA case.

Maybe I should post pictures of these HEPA modding possibilities later when I have the time...

What I used for the pre motor filter is just a foam (2 cm thick) from old mattress. It shouldn't limit the suction, but I have to measure it and compare measurements to the original.
It would be interesting to see your hepa mod pictures.
