Is it difficult to change the power cord? Reason I am asking I may need to change the power cord for the LX I just purchased. |

There are 2 cords in the winder? Isn't it just one 20 foot cord? I maybe in for a challenge then. |

Andy is right there are 2 cords.
Look at the back of the cordwiner there's a round metal part that's removable and here's the small cord that plugs into the vacuum cleaner. Round prongs for the model XXX and flat for the model LX/LXI. By simply switchng these cords the winder can be used on either machine. A word of caution if the main cord won't retract. This means the inner spring is sprung! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT!!! That spring was coiled in a machine at the factory, IT'S RAZOR SHARP and you can get baddly cut if you handle it. There are several cordwinders on EBay and you can get one that works. While the winder on my LX works great I don't use it, I keep the cord retracted. I got an Electrolux cord, pluged it into the Belden plug and use that. I don't want to run the risk of spring the winder. Hi Andy: I look forward to seeing the pictures as they can explaine this better than I can. Alex Taber. This post was last edited 02/10/2016 at 01:04 |

The Electrolux factory in Old Greenwich, Connecticut was in a residential area meaning that according to town zoning regulations no rubber parts could be made at the factory.
The cords were made in Chicago by the Belden cord and wire company and the winders by the Vacuum Cleaner Corp. of Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. Other parts were farmed out as well like the tubing for the model LX/LXI ejector, handles, gaskets, trim on the attachments and all parts rubber, most likely the hoses as well as the base material was rubber. This was of course a highly guarded secret as Electrolux claimed that they 'made it all!" but Electrolux, like all companies were subject to the rules of the day. |

Here she is! You would not be able to switch the machine cord as the cover is riveted down inside

No problem! That is where the covered wire goes in, but inside it splits to 2 wires that are covered by a riveted plate as seen here

Thanks, Steve! The white kenmore came to me from my grandmother, as the hose was shot, so i acquired a replacement. She has another like this, a magic cord and a later whispertone.

Hi Lovelux:
When the model LX first came out it had the same cordwinder as the model XXX, (chrome) and simply replaced the small cord to the machine. Then a year or so later they went with the hammertone blue, and of course changed the side nameplates as well. As to the small cord, I knew this because I did the same thing when I snapped off the Belden plug on the original winder. Till now nobody was the wiser. As for Nathan, I know him well and he's a great guy, good luck i\on getting the correct crevice tool. |
