I finally found a Type T cord winder for the LX but still searching one for the xxx. If I find another one with the cord for the LX, can I change it to use the xxx cord? Do they use the same Type T cord winder?

I have no idea but those are gorgeous machines. My grandparents had an LX like that, which was used regularly well into the 1990s.

Those machines are GORGEOUS! Just today, I got my Super J and its power nozzle out and vacuumed the whole house. The Super J needed a good clean up, though. It was nasty.

What is the difference between the two

Andy,

What is the difference between the two attaching it to the machine? Is it not the same? The only difference I see is the cord.

Thanks

Thanks Andy for the pictures. I guess I can get a cord winder for the LX and just change the power cord to fit the model xxx. It is hard to come by a cord winder for the xxx with the correct cord. Did you ever change the cord in the winder?

Yes, it was for a customer at my repair shop. that was a Pain in The Rear End! No, its not hard to find an XXX cordwinder. My advice is call Nathan, and he should be able to set you up with a cordwinder for 10 bucks. I can also check if i have a spare down in my shop

Is it difficult to change the power cord? Reason I am asking I may need to change the power cord for the LX I just purchased.

Which cord? The one IN the winder of the one that goes from the canister to the winder?

Post# 343315 , Reply# 11   2/9/2016 at 20:11 (2,970 days old) by lovelux ()

There are 2 cords in the winder? Isn't it just one 20 foot cord? I maybe in for a challenge then.

The cord that goes from the canister to the winder is a separate cord from the one you pull out. Ill tear one apart tomorrow and take pictures

2 cords in an Elextrolux cordwinder?

caligula's profile picture
Andy is right there are 2 cords.

Look at the back of the cordwiner there's a round metal part that's removable and here's the small cord that plugs into the vacuum cleaner. Round prongs for the model XXX and flat for the model LX/LXI. By simply switchng these cords the winder can be used on either machine.

A word of caution if the main cord won't retract. This means the inner spring is sprung! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT!!! That spring was coiled in a machine at the factory, IT'S RAZOR SHARP and you can get baddly cut if you handle it. There are several cordwinders on EBay and you can get one that works. While the winder on my LX works great I don't use it, I keep the cord retracted. I got an Electrolux cord, pluged it into the Belden plug and use that. I don't want to run the risk of
spring the winder.

Hi Andy: I look forward to seeing the pictures as they can explaine this better than I can.

Alex Taber.

2 cords in an Elextrolux cordwinder?

caligula's profile picture
Hi lovelux, scroll back up to reply 6 and look at pictures 4 and 5 to see the small round part I spoke about, remove the nut and the cap comes off revealing the cord connection, then simply replace it with the cord of your choice (XXX or LX/LXI) and youre good to go.

Did you know these are not made by Electrolux?

caligula's profile picture
The Electrolux factory in Old Greenwich, Connecticut was in a residential area meaning that according to town zoning regulations no rubber parts could be made at the factory.

The cords were made in Chicago by the Belden cord and wire company and the winders by the Vacuum Cleaner Corp. of Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. Other parts were farmed out as well like the tubing for the model LX/LXI ejector, handles, gaskets, trim on the attachments and all parts rubber, most likely the hoses as well as the base material was rubber. This was of course a highly guarded secret as Electrolux claimed that they 'made it all!" but Electrolux, like all companies were subject to the rules of the day.

The cord winder company in PA also made--

--other products(not for Elux)using the same round housing and mechanism. One was a retractable clothes line(not electric) that could be pulled across a basement or outdoors on laundry day and rewound after clothes dried. Also an extension cord with the main cord pulled out as on Elux and a female outlet on the round housing.Good quality products.

Here she is! You would not be able to switch the machine cord as the cover is riveted down inside

Small cord.

caligula's profile picture
Hi Andy:

If you go to the back of the winder the cord attached to the small round thing in picture 1 of reply 20 is what powers up the Electrolux.

Thanks for sharing.

No problem! That is where the covered wire goes in, but inside it splits to 2 wires that are covered by a riveted plate as seen here

Your Model LX.

Hi lovelux:

Now all you need is the right crevice tool, or 'Narrow space cleaner' as Electrolux called it.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for looking into the cord winder and supplying the pictures. I found another cord winder on Ebay and it is for the LX, so it won't with the xxx. I probably can just change the plug to fit the xxx if I can't change the whole cord. We shall see...I get it on Tuesday.

Worked out ok with Model xxx

Hi Andy,

The changing of the small cord from the cord winder to the canister was a success. All I had to do was remove the small cap with the nut on top and it exposed the wires. See the picture.

Did you remove this cap when you took apart yours? Alex was correct about removing to expose the wires.

I tested it and the machine ran normal. Instead of using this one on the LX, I used it for the xxx. Another cord winder is coming Tuesday for the LX which has the correct plug. So I am good to go with both machines. To be on the safe side, since I cut the original cord, I ordered another Model xxx power cord in case this cord winder breaks or is stolen...lol

Thanks!

Andy,

Thanks for helping out by taking your cord winder apart. At least we learned something about the cord winders.

BTW, do you have any Kenmore canister machines? We had one and I have some bags for it and they are no use to me, so if you want them, send me an email where I can send them. The bag package has a lot of model numbers on it. You can have them. I don't want anything for them.

oh wow

We had the canister vacuum in your first picture. I believe we had 2 of them and somehow they disappeared between moving. I know one of them, the hose went bad. I think our cleaning lady broke them and we threw them away like idiots. I will put the bags in the mail to you.

Steve

Thanks, Steve! The white kenmore came to me from my grandmother, as the hose was shot, so i acquired a replacement. She has another like this, a magic cord and a later whispertone.

2 cords in an Elextrolux cordwinder.

caligula's profile picture
Hi Lovelux:

When the model LX first came out it had the same cordwinder as the model XXX, (chrome) and simply replaced the small cord to the machine. Then a year or so later they went with the hammertone blue, and of course changed the side nameplates as well. As to the small cord, I knew this because I did the same thing when I snapped off the Belden plug on the original winder. Till now nobody was the wiser.

As for Nathan, I know him well and he's a great guy, good luck i\on getting the correct crevice tool.
