I have been anxiously waiting for this one to get here! This is the same exact model that my grandparents had when I was a kid, a TOL Hoover Concept I Model U3327, and I had been avidly looking for one ever since it disappeared years ago, then one of my best friends, Jonathan Radesky found an identical model on eBay for me so I jumped on it because I haven't seen the same one anywhere at all since the original disappeared. This one finally arrived today after about 2 weeks of anticipation and I was absolutely ecstatic!! It's in absolutely MINT condition! It was obviously a very lightly used machine as the Quadraflex Agitator shows very minimal signs of wear and the brush strips look nearly new! And there are no scuffs or marks like with the green one I just picked up. The only things I had to do were: give it a good wipe down as it was sort of dusty, vacuum out the cloth bag, put in a new Air Freshener tab, and install new headlight bulbs. The PowerDrive is still very strong and it already had a new belt. One thing I found very creepy(in a good way) and very interesting was the fact that when I first turned it on after unpacking it and testing it for the first time, it smelled IDENTICAL to the one I remember as a child, my grandmother was an avid believer in potpourri scented Carpet Fresh powder and when I first turned it on, it was the exact same smell!!! It's one of those scent memories that we all have I suppose. I couldn't believe it though, it was almost like my grandmother was speaking to me saying "I'm glad you got my favourite Hoover back!". The other thing I love is the fact that my grandfather was a human computer and kept the most meticulous inventory records for absolutely everything and because of that, I have every piece of literature & advertisements and then some for for the original one they purchased in 1988, owners manual and all. I also have all of the literature that came with the 2 Dial-A-Matics they bought in the late 60s as well. There will be many pics to come for all of these! I hope you all find these as interesting as I do! I can't wait to hear what you all think!!!

John, did you get the email I sent you?

Vac-O-Matic, it really does hold special memories for me, I will cherish this find for a very long time, both because it was a family piece and because a very dear friend helped me find it.

Austin;

At the bottom of the news paper add, it is written in cursive "Ted does what to manager"??????
Also, in the list of Hoover showrooms, the one for Michigan, in Detroit, is on Puritan avenue.
No one in their right mind goes into that neighborhood these days.
Just keeping it light!

Yes indeed! One does need screws to put a vacuum back together! Or?

Pieces cont.

Yes John! Although some modern vac's have more click tabs than screws.
They try and try but can't pretend.
One look at a vintage Hoover and they too fall to pieces.

reciept,

I see they purchased it from Rich's.
Nice to have that to add to the collectable value.

Rich's

vintagevaclover's profile picture
My grandparents were both In-House Interior Designers for Rich's in Atlanta in the 50s and early 60s, back when they used to have a very nice furniture department and actually staged it like homes. For a very long time most of their purchases came from there.

Is there interest in these Concept Hoovers?

I'm not an upright person, but I saw 2 today for $5 each.  One was beige, the other was more of a late 70s, early eightys rust and brown colors.  I should have nabbed them for someone here.

Woweee what a fine specimen. The concept one is another vacuum of my childhood. My grandfather still has two I distinctly remember playing with as a child in the library of their home. The sound is unmistakably the most recognizable noise of my childhood.

Amazing machines. Some of the best carpet groomers out there

This one is definitely one of the ones I remember most as a child. This one, and a few Convertibles and the 2 Dial-A-Matics I mentioned on this thread. I remember playing with several of them at my grandparents house too but not just in the library, they had lots of antique Persian rugs that had only ever been "Hoover cleaned" lol.

Andrew,

it was a good bargain at $116 as well. Better than what you get today for that much for sure.
Are all Rich's closed, or is there still one up at the mall a little north of Buckhead?
Am I thinking of Dillards?
A friend of mine relocated to Sandy Springs several years ago.
We had a great time when I visited.

Thank you!:) I completely agree as well, I definitely love that colour. I have a Hoover Legacy 730 with a mauve coloured hood and striped grey bag, it's one of the most 80's looking machines I've ever seen.

@Vintagevaclover You should find the Concept Two twin of the U3317. Model number is U3321. I've included a pic of mine below:

Marc, I'd love to ad a Concept II (especially one like that!) to my collection, I don't have any Concept IIs right now. Is the handle top on yours original or a replacement? I only ask because mine is burgundy like the rest of it. Also, does yours have the electronic motor speed control?

John, thank you very much! It took a long time to find. It was the first one id seen since my grandparents and I haven't seen one since.

Also Marc, if you like rarities, I also have this Concept I which I was told was rare. It's a BOL either Sears or Kmart model. It needs some help though.

Post# 352091 , Reply# 49   5/12/2016 at 22:32 (2,904 days old) by MarcSchroeder ()

@Vintagevaclover Yes, the handle, cord, and bumper (I guess that's what you call it) have all been replaced. The U3321 does not have the speed control—that would be very cool. It belonged to my great aunt who purchased it in late '87 or early '88, making it a few months older than me. I believe she bought it at Service Merchandise in Jackson, Mississippi. She gave it to me when she bought her self propelled Windtunnel in '99 or 2000. Of course, the Concept Two has outlasted every vacuum she's had since, lol.

That is a very neat Concept One you have. I've always found the later models interesting because the body is the same color as the bag (not beige or gray). I will admit though, I'm partial to the older Concepts with the pointy, retro-style handle.

Interestingly enough, the vacuum that got me addicted was a U3317 just like yours. It was my mom's. Unfortunately, it did not hold up through the years and I ended up using it for parts for my U3225.

The original U3317 was purchased from Keys Showroom in 1988 but I think the one I have now is from 1991. The Dial-A-Matics were bought from Riches in the 60s. I have a similar blue Dial-A-Matic now too. The originals got tossed a long time ago unfortunately. I love having all the original paper work for all of those too. I also have this Decade 80 green Concept I bought at a thrift shop with the original pointy handle like you were talking about too!
