On Jan. 1, my friend and former employer when I sold Electro-Hygiene, passed away. I was glad to be able to visit with his son and daughter at the funeral and the dinner afterward, they both live in Florida now and I hadn't seen them since they were kids. While we were visiting I told them I was glad to have been able to visit with him back in March, and that I had shown him pics of my collection and he really seemed to enjoy them. His son told me there were a few vacs at the house and if I would come over after the dinner I could have them if I wanted.
First stop was the hall closet, and out came a model 903 Electro-Hygiene upright with attachments and instruction book, which was the model we sold when we worked together. Runs great but needs some cleanup, a definite keeper as this was the one he actually used. Think he might have gotten it about the time he sold the store, as the serial # indicates it was built in 1978.
Then down the basement, where there was an 886 Royal, an Electro-Hygiene 601, and an Electro-Hygiene 285 basket case. There was also a sack with 4 new 6-blade fans in it. His son also took my phone numbers and told me they would keep an eye out for other parts, attachments, paperwork, etc. as they go through the house and would let me know if they find anything else.
I took them all home and recently checked them out. The 886 sounds good but sparks. The 601 sounds terrible and sparks a lot and that's a shame because I'm pretty sure it was the one they had at their house on Kelley's Island--I ran it there myself. The basket case 285 is seized up, fan and brushroll are missing, don't know if I'll be able to do anything with it or not. But I will restore what I can, in the memory of my friend and former employer, "Papa Don" Loehrig. May he rest in peace.
Jeff
