Hoover's reuse of names

Anyone have any views or know why Hoover reused model names on totally different models ?

Do you think it was about keeping the trademark name alive ?

Feels like it was done a lot less in the US market, is that right ?

It was a very common practise with Hoover in Australia and is still a being done all the time by Hoover/ Candy in Europe

I like both of these Elite/ Legacy machines, a part of Hoover history

It is a Hoover Powerdrive (left) and a Hoover Elite (right) but they were rebadged so Hoover could sell more.

Oh sorry yeh, I just saw that colour and the bag housing style, never looked at the cleaner head haha.

Well near enough all vacuums made by Hoover in the US were some sort of Elite.

Like our Hoover Turbopower 1's and Turbopower 2's that we had in the 90s, they were all pretty much the same but they came in different colours and slightly different features to make the consumer think it was a new improved model.

Wish we got more Elites here, we only had a few, my faveourite Elites are the Elite ll's

Without a doubt the use of a model name is all about identity and branding. At a guess, the reuse of a name is about either brand recognition or that a name was cheap & easy to use, or both.

Interestingly, in the UK, Hoover were one of the few vacuum cleaner manufacturers to use model names, and yet it wasn't really until the 1980's that Hoover made reference to the name, either on the cleaner, the packaging, or instructions.

The Junior 375 and 119 had the name on it, as did the early constellation cleaners up to the introduction of, I think, the grey cleaners. But after that the names were not used in writing. The first I can think of to get the ball rolling was the yellow Hoover Junior Deluxe upright that replaced the Hoover Starlight. But even then it wasn't really a wide-spread usage until the early 1980's when Hoover upped their game with many new and up-to-date cleaners, such as Turbopower and Sensortronic. Even then, their Freedom, Senior, and Junior cleaners went unnamed.
