Hi everyone, new member here actually. I mostly collect Hoovers and anything related to them.
Thought I'd break the ice with my latest acquisition. What I have here (and judging by the serial number and the location of the model number) is a 1927 Hoover Model 700 That I purchased and restored this past weekend. It was initially on craigslist for $90, so I played the waiting game for about 2 months, price gradually lowering. When the price dropped to $35 I asked the gentlemen if he'd take $20 for it, in the end without any hassle, I got the vacuum for $25. :) Spent hours cleaning, polishing, sewing, oiling, and regreasing. It had been repaired in August of 1972 but I don't believe it was touched ever again since then. As I found that one of the bearing had locked up and spun inside the housing within the brushroll. I got some before and after shots. Some were from the original ad and then my repair progress. I forgot to get some shots of me going through the motor.. It isn't 100% yet. Currently waiting on a new belt and brushes. Couldn't find anything for a hoover so I settled on some Kirby Heritage II brushes. I still need to work on getting some new brushroll brush inserts though..But for now it runs fine as it sits. |

Thank you kindly akabent! Its true they do last forever. Hard to believe its 89 years old now and it still runs good as new! And ain't that the truth, though since you mentioned it, I'm still looking out for a brush strip. One is in perfect shape, the other however is chewed up and worn. Indeed I will and even more so after 100 years.

I guess I my brush roll end caps weren't perfectly straight. The ends of the brush roll would rub against the inside of the end caps.
To remedy that problem I used my thumb as a reference point and found the lowest spot, gradually (and ever so gently with 89 year old metal!)massaging it back into shape with a crescent wrench and lifting up. Made some thin washers to give it a little more clearance and now she's smooth as butter! Also thanks to Rick and his friend for helping me find a set of brush roll strips as well as advice! Just a small update I'd thought I'd share. |
