Electrolux Model S - CHECK THIS OUT!! 		[Down to Last]

A local vacuum shop called me and said a person traded in an old Electrolux on a Miele today and it still has the original box. So I went to the store and my jaw dropped and I literally messed my pants when I saw that it was a Model S. My face still has a grin on it from excitement!!! They gave it to me. This thing has the original box, owner's manual, attachments, etc. EVERYTHING! It is in mint condition and the hose does NOT leak at all. I guess the vacuum gods were looking over me today too... :-)

WOWWWWWWWWWW Logan what a find!!! I know you've been dying for one of these! See, sometimes the Vacuum Genie just comes out of nowhere with a wondrous prize!

I note a couple of interesting things about this.

Look at the floor tool.

First, it has a locking-neck swivel connector, which of course first came on the AE but was not offered with the E or early S.

This is the second S that I've seen with that style swivel connector (I have one), BUT, the one I have also has the late Model F style floor tool, where there is a long, narrow air channel instead of the rectangular opening in the middle and the two plastic 'fingers.'

Also, the lock release on the swivel connector has a rubber covering, again, which did not come out until the Model F.

You will note that the illustration in the instruction pamphlet shows the non-locking swivel connector and early-style rug tool.

Just another example of how Electrolux's developments came gradually and not all at once.

What generous people they are at that shop! I love it! I know what a thrill that has to be. I'm sure you could dig up a crevice tool for it. I guess that was part of the economy.

Electrolux Early and Late Floor Tools

 Here's a comparision photo I've been meaning to post ever since the subject came up some time ago.

The tool at the top is the earliest-style. The plastic fingers on either side of the suction opening were an evolutionary step from the XXX/LX/LXI tool which had a removeable device called the "tuftor" for using on small rugs. It had two clear yellow plastic fingers like the ones you see in this rug tool, joined in the middle by a springy steel collar. You would snap the tuftor inside the rug side of the floor tool.

For some reason, when the E came out, they did away with the long, narrow suction channel on the rug side, opting instead for the "permanent Tuftor."

At some point, it must have occurred to someone that this was not a good idea, so they went back to the long narrow air channel with the late Model F tool and added a second row of "grooming ridges."

This is the same basic style as the XXX/LX/LXI except that the suction opening in the middle of the channel is larger.

Other evolutionary changes --

. early swivel connector stated "Electrolux - Top"

. later swivel connector (late AF) stated This Side Up - Electrolux"

. locking neck on the swivel connector

. rubber tip on unlocking lever

. rubber bumper all around

. with Model G, the "gleaner" - a thin metal bar smooth on one side and little teeth on the other - was done away with and replaced with a finely-ridged bar that did not reverse.

. with Silverado, metal swivel connector became plastic. Much flimsier and does not stand up to vigorous use.

n.b. the bare-floor side of all the combination tools is the same other than the color of the paint in the middle area.

Disposable Bags

 Crevicetool:

Yes on the very back of the manual there is a small advertisement for the "Automatic Self-Sealing Disposable Bags." It says you can purchase them from your "friendly Electrolux salesman". Get this....you could get 18 bags for $3.45!! Man how times have changed...

There is also an advertisement for Electrolux house cleaning products like Insect Killer, Window Cleaner, and Furniture Polish. Now I would LOVE to find a bottle of Electrolux Furniture Polish. :-)

btw, have you ever seen the other S hose? Same color combination, difference is that the weaving pattern is pairs of stripes in straight lines instead of the chevron pattern.

Andy: I am going to bring it with me to St. Louis/Springfield next week. We can try it out against one of your new Mieles! Of course the Miele will win, but it will still be fun...!

Charlie: Yep it has the heavy steel wands. I don't like using them, they are just too heavy. I used the lighweight aluminum wands off a Model G when I used it today. Much easier to use. No I have not seen the other S hose. Do you have a picture of one?

Since you're more hands-on familiar with every Lux model than I am, maybe you'll know the answer to something that crosses my mind every time I see a Model S. Was that body re-used for the L, with a different bag door setup and the addition of the halo? Looks awfully close to me, but you're the expert.

I'll have to get the S hose out - it's stored in one of my half-dozen leatherette hampers, which I use for hose storage. As I said, it has the same colors as the one you have there, but instead of the v-shaped "chevron" pattern in the weaving, it stripes in pairs about 1/4" apart then each pair about 1 in. from its neighbors. It's same spacing and configuration as the R, G, 1205, L, etc., but different colors.


SANDY:

While the S body is somewhat similar to the L, it is different. It's a bit shorter for one thing. Same for the R, which -is- the same as the S with the re-addition of a halo or optional cord winder.

If you saw the S/R and L side by side you'd see the differences.

Hello Logan from the UK,

what a lovely 'complete' find............I have only ever once seen one of those substantial and ingenious carpet/floor of what I only assume is an exclusive American design.....I bet it works very well with that design of machine.....congrats.....finding a 'cardboard boxed' box & machine together in the UK is now very rare !!!

Your L is a carbon copy of my mom's vacuum. It had its motor changed because she used off brand bags in it, according to the Electrolux man. I'm still surprised she bought the model with the cord reel.

Yeah Electrolux would say the motor went bad from not using "their" bags. The off brand 4 ply Electrolux bags are just as good as the genuine bags. Regardless of what Electrolux says. They just want you to buy from them not anyone else! :-)

That's what I believe Logan, but we never had the problem again after the motor change. I have some "off brand" bags I'm going to try on my 1453.

I think the Silverado is a 1505. The 1453 is the special edition (economy model) of the silverado????

The 1453 also came in the gray color like the silverado. From my repair manual, the 1453 had a motor more similar to the 1205 than a SJ

You are right! The economy or "special" model came in 3 colors and is the vacuum the replaced the Model L:

Brown (like the Olympia)
Gray (like the Silverado)
Off-White (like the Diamond Jubilee).

Electrolux discontinued the vacuum after the Diamond Jubilee. They used the same smaller motor as the 1205 and 1205-J (less suction than the top of the line cleaners).

 I love those machines. I have 3 of them and they are so perfect in their own bizarre short-sheeted little way. Thank you so much for posting pictures from the manual. I've never seen an S manual before.

I keep an Electrolux moth-ball vaporizer on the front of my S just to wrap the cord around. Ain't Kosher, but it works.

Electrolux Model S

 Hi Logan- I have a Model S I use regularly for the past approximately 40+ years! My parents gave it to me & they bought it brand new! I'm wondering if ANYONE out there knows where I can find the motor number to hopefully purchase a new set of brushes. I'm seeing on Google Searches there is a tag somewhere on the vacuum. There are no tags of any kind on the vacuum cleaner.

The information about the model S is engraved on the inside of the bag door. It uses the same motor as the Automatic F model, which are the standard Elux carbon brushes with the screw hole in the 90 degree flag

The Special Edition came in 4 colours.

Brown to match the Olympia
Silver Grey to match the Silverado
Seal Grig / Jadestone to match the Diamond Jubilee
Seal Grig / Taupe to match the Marquis Delux

Part way into the Run of the Marquis it was replaced with the LE.
