Hello everybody, I'm about to buy an Electrolux Super J off of Craigslist for $20. I was wondering if I can service the bearings myself, or if they're sealed. Thanks in advance for any help! :-)

Congratulations on your new find.  I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure the bearings can be replaced.  See the link for an old post on how to do it.  Good luck!

The front bearing by the fans is held in by two plates that are riveted to the bearing plate. Just drill out the rivets and then you can replace the bearing. When you put it back together just pop rivet the two plates back in place or just use screws and nuts.

The rear bearing is a sleeve bearing, there is a special tool to seat the sleeve at the correct depth.

I posted something about bearings here:
www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-...

In short ..
I would suggest you get the 2RS style bearing (double seal) for longevity.
This is a sealed beared vs shielded. A sealed bearing will hold up better in a dirty environment.

A common size is the 608 bearing which is 8mm Bore, 22mm OD, and 7mm Width

So 608 2RS is sealed, and 608 ZZ is shielded.

When you are done drilling out the rivets, get some screws and nuts with captive star washers and put some loctite on the threads

Make sure to clean the area where you are putting the bearing in

2nd pic is bearing in original state (other side)
