Consumer Reports has reviewed a fairly nice group of vacuums. Ratings are available for the new Kirby Avalir, Miele Dynamic uprights, several Maytag vacuums, fuller Brush Mighty Maid, and the usual suspects. I don't generally trust the overall rankings because it's not clear how they are compiled and some components are nonsensical. But it's worth noting which vacuums aced the carpet cleaning tests (Excellent score for Carpet), listed by overall ranking: Miele Dynamic U1 (Twist & Cat & Dog, Kirby Avalir, Eureka Boss Smart Vac, Miele Dynamic U1 Jazz, Maytag M1200, and Hoover Platinum Bagged. No bagless vacuums, and no canister vacuums scored excellent for carpet cleaning.

I think their reports on vacuums are a crock, mainly because they don't do durability/longevity testing. That needs to change.

I gave up on CU,too-their durability and relaibility reports come from the annual CU surveys they send to subscribers.Some of that data may be old or innaccurate-customers don't always tell the truth on a survey and CU may not include vacuums on that years survey that is sent out.they alternate between cars,other appliances,electronic-entertainment items and so on.
