So, as some people will already know, I got this for £60 ( $92.47 ) from British Heart Foundation last Friday (28/08/15) I noticed her there before about 3 weeks ago but thought it was bit pricey, but after speaking to a few people on here they made me change my mind and I went and got her!

This is my very first Sebo cleaner and so far I like it. Can't wait to use her properly! All that needed doing was ~ The usual strip, new bag,new filters, polish and wax.

Again as some people will already know,I want a Sebo Felix, and this hasn't changed. Infact I think after buying my X1.1 it's strengthened the urge to get a Felix even more! Before pictures as usual and then afters. Enjoy!

Also ~ What are the dusting brushes like? Are they any good? If so depending on the usage of this machine I might go get one :P

Before video too ~

1st picture ~ Yum!

2nd picture ~ Separated. I love how easy these are to disassemble. I also like how the handle separates without having to use a screwdriver same as the main body from the chassis.

This is going to sound daft, but when I first saw these (few years back) I thought they were a dirty fan machine!

Nice thin layer of carbon dust. Infact,in all of this machine that's mainly all I found(in the motor area of course.) Hardly any dirt. Just shows how good these must be then.

I really like the Sebo dusting brush. It's triangled shape means it's very easy to get into corners and it twists to it can be used at different angles.

After their nice warm soapy bath they got rinsed, albeit slowly as the damn shower is broke...AGAIN..

Back on track ~

I let them air dry over night then I stuck them in the airing cupboard to finish them off. Mainly because I knew my brother would just "accidentally" kick them.

You've gone a great job there, Emma, well done! As you know, I luuurrve my Sebo. Looking forward to hearing how you get on with it. They're nice, solid machines and very easy to use. The auto height adjustment makes a nice balance between deep cleaning and ease of use, so whilst the cleaner purs and glides along the carpet, it still gives great results.

If you need any spares or want to get additional tools, there all available on Sebo.co.uk and reasonably priced.

Random close up.

Again thank you Sebo~Fan for giving me the link to the parts list. It helped when reassembling!

And thank you to the people who made me change my mind into getting her.

I will do a video (Maybe a thread,or extra comment on here) on my opinions about it after using it as my daily driver for a week. Keeping in mind there is 3 adults and 2 cats it has quite a bit to do!

Great job there Emma, looks great. Hope you enjoy using it, look forward to hearing what you think.

SEBO's are lovely vacuums to use, maintain too. So easy and effortless in use. I first discovered SEBO 8 years ago when I got my Felix Classic. Never looked back and it was this vacuum that got me back into bagged vacuums again.

They certainly do lay flat and have a slim body. Not many modern vacuums can lie flat! Would love an X series one day.

The dusting brushes are great I have a small one for my Felix. Would like to get the larger one too. The mini turbo head is good to especially for per hair. The upholstery tool does a great job too.

Glad to hear you loved using your X1.1, how did you find the automatic height adjustment? I bet you found it glides across the carpet with ease!? Did it pick up much in the bag?

The auto height adjustment ~ I honestly thought I wouldn't like it,but infact i quite like it :P

Just from downstairs it picked up way more than i thought it would. Going to vacuum upstairs later so I'll get a picture later.

Thank you.

Great to hear you like the auto height adjustment, not everyone likes it. From my brief go of an X series I liked it.

Looks like it surprised you what it picked up then, the brush roll is very good on the SEBO's. Same one fits the Felix power head same power head (ET-1) used on the Premuim Cylinder/Canister models. You can get a delicate version of the brush roll which is softer for delicate flooring. Great idea!

See what it picks upstairs later!

Excellent job, Emma! From stripping it down, cleaning it off and reassembling it, to even trying it.

The black muck on the underside of the bin release before the floor head is just carbon dust, when evidently the filter hasn't had a change. I hope you'll keep the SEBO as you'll find out in time just how long lasting those dust bags are - the synthetic ones last a bit more than the paper ones in my experience, but also plenty of other X1 owners who report the same. Basically a box of bags should last you around 2 years, but then it really depends on what you'll put your X1.1 through.

I'll second what sebo_fan says about the new synthetic bags. I love them over the paper ones.

Emma what do you think of the built in quick release hose and wand setup?

I only used it briefly to suck up some small plant leaves and it was very easy and handy to just pull the hose up and do what you need to do.

I love the handle on it too, very comfy to hold in my opinion.

This is after all of downstairs and upstairs. Downstairs hadn't been done for just over a week and same as upstairs, possibly a touch longer. The last machine I used was my 1995 Turbopower 2 U2464.

Looking great there Emma, well done!

The brilliant thing about the Sebo bags is that, because they're top fill and coupled with the filter design, you can really pack the bags full so it's like a brick by the time it needs changing. They take MONTHS to fill up on mine.

Glad to hear you've had a quick go with the hose/wand. Not many uprights that have a comfy built in wand/handle setup.

You've done a great job Emma it looks fab. Great pictures too. That bag will last a while, and with the top fill and unique side suction it will compact as it fills as Chris says like a brick!! Great design is the side suction setup.

It's amazing how old this design is for SEBO but it continues to sell and people who are new to the brand today love them, as well as existing SEBO owners. Just goes to show simple, effective, intuitive design and engineering stands the test of time.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding as they say. No one vacuum will work for everyone and everyone's own experience is different. The Sebo works brilliantly for me and always has. That doesn't discredit Alex's experience, but the only way to form your opinion really is try the machine out in your own home and see for yourself.

Keep us posted, Emma. Very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts, both good and bad.

Believe me Seamus I would but it is my mothers, so it just has to stay there cluttering the cupboard.

In my experience the Miele Dynamic U1 is a far superior cleaner to the Sebo X Upright. For best bagless, I would say the DC40, 41. All 3 of these machines I just mentioned have stair hoses and better attachments than the Sebo, in my experience and opinion.

I am sure you people think I say this just to get at you but I am not, that is just my honest opinion.

The Miele uprights are being phased out due to low sales. They're great cleaners, but very heavy, expensive on consumables and difficult to repair. For example, the whole motor has to be taken out just to replace the handle release and the cleaner has to be completely dismantled just to remove a blockage.

You don't have that problem with a Sebo. High performance, lightweight in operation (and considerably lighter than the Miele uprights to lift), cheaper on consumbles and everything is easily replaceable at relatively low cost.

I agree the Miele is Heavy and difficult to work on and parts are indeed expensive.

I don't agree the performance of the Sebo is high. I would say it is rather average. Just skims over the carpet...I don't feel that cling and agitation on the Sebo, which I find to be the case when I use my DC40 or Dynamic U1.

Well, as I said, the proof is in the pudding. I'm sure Emma will be able to make up her own mind using the Sebo in her own home. Seems to be doing just fine so far, and leaving nice track marks in the carpet.

The whole idea behind the automatic height adjustment is that it works to the optimum height - the balance between wear to the brushroll, wear to the carpet, performance and ease of use. If it wasn't picking up, the bag would be empty and the carpet would still be dirty, which obviously isn't the case.

The huge irony with SEBO is that they have secured worldwide sales of their commercial vacuums before developing the domestic X model. Like every other brand, SEBO also used components from the previous to build the next and so on.

But the difference is, that unlike Hoover Europe, SEBO's parts are largely always available for the X series. I wish I could have got the same kind of widespread availability on other brands' parts - Hoover for example where brush rolls on certain Turbopower uprights are no longer available. The casings, yes, but not the entire brush roll. And sometimes it doesn't feel as good when using a second hand one compared to a genuine new part in a bag ready to go. It's not just Hoover, but other brands that suffer from this too.

One has to remember that though most brands are not commercially based, perhaps there's something there in having commercial links to allow almost lifetime parts availability - same with Numatic infact!

sebofan...Rember, the Turbopowers are no longer available to purchase new unlike the X-series Sebo uprights, so there is no need to stock anything other than bags, belts and bulbs for exsisting models, the more frequent consumables.

The SEBO C series is no longer available to buy yet all parts are available for that model, Alex.

On Miele's UK site, it has only been in the last three years that parts such as spare bin doors, castors and other wear items on their no longer produced certain models are available to buy.

Electrolux also supply a lot of parts for their vacuums no longer produced.

Why can't Hoover? Why did I require to order a specialised part for a Hoover vacuum, currently in production but yet had to be bought in from Hoover in Germany when Hoover UK should have stocked the part?

Sebo recommend replacing both filters with every 20 bags, but to be honest, 20 bags will probably last me about 10 years lol. I replace both filters once a year

Mine takes a good 4-5 months to fill a bag as it keeps compacting the dust.

yes, but you're using paper bags in a dirty fan cleaner. By default of the design, it will need changing more often. The ultra bag coupled with the top fill and filter set up mean that you can seriously cram the bag full. I don't change it until the bag is full to the top.

Emma, it may appear to be half full, but you can keep using it and using it. The top fill design means that the dirt is constantly being compacted and squashed down, so everytime you use it, you'll get more and more in it. The bag will be rock solid by the time you need to replace it.

Although a different set up the Felix has a top fill bag and that compacts the dirt so it's like a brick when it's full. They last me around 3 months with having a pet so the X series bag would last around 5 months being another 2 litres more.

I've put a little sticker inside the bag compartment so I know when I last changed the bag and also so I can see how long each bag roughly lasts me.

It is actually TRUE that dirty bagged uprights collect far more dust and in turn often require their dust bags to be emptied more frequently. That in turn means more pay out for dust bags, and paper ones at that. Im surprised Hoover hasn't offered a synthetic dust bag but then they're always out to make money...

An example of this is when the original Turbopower bags had the reuseable pull seal on them. I found the reusable shake out style was useful to a point - but the paper still clogged up too much to be relied upon a second time.

However, here's where the Junior and Senior fought back "in the day," though. Whereas the Turbopower has something like, 6.5 litre dust capacity, the humble little Junior and Senior offers 9 litres capacity per bag and if you have ever allowed the bags to fill completely on both the Powerplus top fill uprights and Junior U1036 and others fitted with the top fill tube, the bags can be completely choked with dust.

Cloth bags were also available for the Junior and Senior. I found it strange that they weren't available for the Turbopower or let alone TP2 series. Nice to see the return on the Purepower Lifetime model though.

Im surprised though that brush rolls are not available for the Turbopower, either. You see brush strip replacements are getting scarce now for the Junior and Senior/Powerplus, but they are still available. Not so with the Turbopower though.

And lets face it, the Junior and Senior are no longer on sale.

Just one little tip - I think the reason the bag door release was playing up is because part of the bag got caught in the side of the door when you were putting it back on

Some very interesting points Emma, great video!

I agree about the wand. I have an additional extension tube for mine that I put straight onto the end of the hose cuff. It doesn't have the chunky handle on the end of it, so it's much easier to use. When I'm doing the stairs or the sofa, I use the tools straight onto the end of cuff. The one thing I do like about the wand is that it's handy for quick pick ups. For example, when you're vacuuming the carpet and you see some crumbs under something or in a corner, you can whip the wand out quickly, without even putting the vacuum upright, and get into tight spaces.

I also agree about the hose, I do wish Sebo would add a full stair stretch hose, so there'd be no need for the extension hose, but at least the option is there for the extension hose.

Personally, I'd like to see Sebo introduce an entry model with manual height adjustment, the basic tools and hose and then have the Automatic machines as the higher end, with a stretch hose onboard and additional tools.

There will only be an argument if someone makes one. So far, this is a perfectly reasonable, calm discussion of both positives and negatives of a cleaner. Just as it should be. Everything has it's pro's and con's, it's interesting to see that discussed on a mature, rational level.

I suggest if anyone starts getting argumentative, we ignore it.

Red X4 in the UK - yes.

sebo_fan's profile picture
Actually Chris, not quite true on the red X4. The red X4 was an online special from 2012 in the UK, as was the white and yellow X4 from 2009 (that I nearly bought) which was available on Amazon UK.

I can't remember the white and yellow X4 model number, sadly but the 90559GB appears to still be on sale at a number of UK companies.

www.appliancespares-direct.co.uk/...

There was also the X1.1 in blue and dark grey that I owned - that appears to be an early Euronics special before the red X1.1

Here's the dark blue X1.1, or rather a stock photo of it with the wand facing the wrong way!
Nice video though, Emma.

About the X wand though - it was designed to be walked around with hence having the top grab wand at the top near the main handle to the upright. I agree that whilst it is bulky for the first time, you’ll soon get used to whipping it out and extending the hose via grabbing and pulling on the wand to get the reach or stretch going.

IN all nearly 20 years I have used the X1A, the T shaped tool has never come off due to the friction fit style of it onto the end of the wand. Neither does the stair cleaning turbo brush, when fitted.

I also have a straight suction tube, but it gets used with the Felix. I do agree regarding the longer hose - it would be appreciated, even if SEBO went as far to cutting the longer extension hose by at least half to compensate for something that could be stored on the machine but not get in the way. Perhaps that will come in time.

I've always found the agitation to be very good on the Sebo too. It doesn't make the dirt bounce like on an old Junior or Senior, but by modern standards, it's very good and enough to clean the floor perfectly.

Meant to say Emma, you can buy the kick back replacement squeegee strips direct from SEBO. To access them, they are fitted on the same side as the removable brush roll by the door once it has been released.

My parents current X4 is quite noisy.
The X1.1 they have is only slightly quieter.

I think the X1 machines are quietest and easiest to push. My parents also have one of those, not sure if the carbon brushes have seated properly as it always smells slightly of ozone.

I need to get better at fixing motors as I've thrown at least 5 £<10 eBay X1 uprights away because the motors were dead. I can never get the fan casings off.

The current X4 was £10.50, it was clogged with hair and lacking a foot pedal, been going for 6 years with my parents.
X1.1 was similar for £10, needed a foot pedal. Height adjustment is broken and the brushroll gets noisy when it's hot, so I assume a bearing there.
X1 was a part of a pair of which I changed the brushes and used for a while. The white one lasted <6 months before the motor started slowing, I assume bearing was beginning to seize. Grey one still exists.

The remaining X1 machines I scrapped were part of a job lot I didn't have time or space for.
The original X4 we had was used from eBay and lasted about 4 months before it started slowing down and smelling of ozone. Sold it on eBay, the buyer replaced the bearing and re-sold it.

I think Sebo uprights are one of the best quality cleaners on sale. However, I don't much like them to use. The staff who clean the communal areas here have two of them somewhere (I say somewhere as recently I have seen a new Henry being used, as well as one of the older Numatic cleaners and from goodness only knows where a Hotpoint Universal upright, but then there are three floors and lots of carpeted corridoors to clean). I know that one of the domestic staff told me she got rather fed-up with the automatic height adjuster on the Sebo taking what seems like a long time to adjust from different carpet types and even then finding it's still not quite right.

It just goes to prove that at the end of the day no vacuum cleaner is perfect. You get near perfection with some brands or some models. I loved my SM2 when I got it but the manual height adjustment feels a lot heavier to push the upright across the floor. I know what I prefer - a Sebo Felix instead and being slightly less bulky with its lower like centre of gravity, it feels easier for me to move than putting up with the manual height adjustment X derived SM2.

The manual height adjustment has always divided opinion. Some love it, some hate it. In my experience, it's always worked well for me. I've had 2 X series cleaners in 4 different houses now and regardless of the type of house (mill conversion flat, 1950's semi, victorian terrace and a new build town house) and type of flooring I've never had any problems with the height adjustment being too slow or not cleaning properly. Indeed, seconds lost waiting for the height adjuster is made up in the time saved using the quick release wand over certain other brands that half the cleaner has to be dismantled just to use the hose. Everything has it's pro's and con's.

Noise wise, I wouldn't call them whisper quiet. Heck, not even Miele quiet. But the noise is not unpleasant. It's a lower pitched noise and not has harsh on the ears as a screaming Dyson or Vax motor. I'd say more comparable with a Henry on full power.

I thought I would like the manual height version but I just dont find it as light or as effective. I know that sounds weird but its just how I feel about the SM2 in general. It may be the bigger floor head but I have used an ET2 before on the old Dart I used to own and it didn't feel bulky. Perhaps the swivel neck has a lot to do with it, IDK.

As collectors though, would life be great if there was a perfect vacuum cleaner? I think I would stop collecting if that was the case.

Or would I just continue to collect brochures and stop collecting actual machines altogether? Im going all Sarah Jessica Parker all of a sudden now... I do apologise.

Could the threat of having a perfect vacuum cleaner spell the end of collecting vacuums? Or do others have other priorities?

To be honest, I think if there was a perfect vacuum that I would still collect. Maybe not modern machines anymore but more vintage, infact to be precise just Turbopowers.

I should imagine it might have a fairly big impact on vacuum collectors, but if many are like me,they will still have the interest in them to keep on collecting.
