I just ordered an Electrolux Silverado from Nathan Thomas, otherwise known as Electrolux-Dude. I have a combo floor (and wands for that), a crevice, and a dust brush combo. He will send the canister, hose, sheath, and a PN-4A. Was $100 too much to pay? I want some advice to when I get the vacuum so i know the tricks with it. I always set my cleaning selector on 4, but im going to check each setting. My guess is it will need a new hose, but I might luck out with its hose. Any help i can get would be good!
Happy Vacuuming,
Andy

If I know Nathan like I think I do, he will go through that vacuum top to bottom to ensure you will have a great runnning machine for years to come! Nathan knows his vacuums and I trust his knowledge and expertise on them; plus if he tells you something, he will do it. I purchased a Model G from him a few years ago for my mother-in-law and it's running flawlessly! While $100 sounds steep, you are getting a quality vacuum that has been thoroughly checked out and guaranteed to be good. On the other hand, you could purchase one from eBay, pay that much or more for it, and have it shoot a fireball out of it the second you plug it in (trust me, I've been there!). Good luck with your new-to-you Silverado! Please post photos when you get it!

Steve

He is going to send me some pictures this weekend, so ill put them up then. Its a bit steeper than i wanted to pay but he wanted to get rid of some of his collection. This is one of the ones he had for sale. I wasnt finding anything good at the 2 Goodwills i visited, but I have 5 more to go. Even if i find one there, it would have to be in good shape since im already getting a good Electrolux. Anybody have good tricks/advice for a new silverado owner? If it needs a new hose, i decided on this hose and new brush-roll (as needed):

Hope someone will give me some advice, and i would Absolutely LOVE to see pictures of Everybody Else's Silverado

Silverado

Congrats on deciding to get a Silverado. I use mine often, but have the version with PN5. They are very powerful machines. Just leave the cleaning selector somewhere around the middle and you should be just fine. Adjust it accordingly for big jobs with fine dirt.
I always use either the hepa "perfect" brand bags or pre-blue genuine Electrolux bags. The newest blue ones from Aerus just don't filter as well as the older gray ones or others in my experience. I have also had negative experiences with the generic "multi-filter" bags. It seems like foul smells get through them easily. You may want to look into getting the behind the bag carbon filter for your Silverado. Aerus just introduced those recently.

Nathan is great to deal with. I have bought several Luxes from him in the past with nothing but great experiences. The machines are always clean and in great working order. One thing I hate about the machines I get from EBay is the "old dust" smell they emit before being thoroughly cleaned. In addition, you would never know of it runs correctly if bought there.

I hear Nathan is good about his sales. I prefer a square PN on a metal canister and an L shaped on a plastic canister. Ive never had a Silverado, and i cant wait for it to arrive. I only use generics because local stores sell them. Im not driving an hour to Chicago just for vacuum bags.
If anybody here has a Silverado, PLEASE POST PICTURES! I live 'Rado's and i like seeing other peoples collections. Silverado Pictures are Requested

If it had the PN-5 i would have gotten one of Electrolux-Dudes Olympias, but i like the PN-4. Gramma had a Silverado with a PN-5, and it was pretty cool! My Aunt has it as her daily driver now. Ill try to get a picture when I next go there. I only decided on the PN-4A since my storage space is limited...seems as i have less space each time i get another machine...
Thanks for those posters. Would you post some pictures of your olympia? and anyone else could post olympia or silverado pictures!

Here's my Silverado with the matching turbo rug washer & floor polisher.

The link is to a Silverado TV commercial on YouTube.

I like the Silverado very much. It's beautifully styled and colored, cleans very well, and is very reliable.

My favorite Luxes are the classic square metal canisters. The Silverado is essentially identical to my Super J but with a slightly different handle configuration and a less garish (and to my eye, more pleasing) color scheme. I think you'll be quite pleased. Here are a couple pix of mine with the PN-2 I acquired last week. I definitely prefer the shape of the PN-2, which is essentially the same as the PN-4, over the later L-shaped "Omniflow" nozzles; in fact, I got my PN-2 to replace the PN-5 I had originally gotten to go with this machine. I just kept catching the outrigger on furniture legs. The PN-2 works much better in close quarters.

Looks very lovely.

One big improvement / enhancement you could make would be to get a new coiled vinyl electric hose and put the woven hose away or just use it for display.

The woven electric hoses for those models (Marquise, Silverado, Ambassador, GJ etc.) are heavy, stiff, and about a foot shorter than the newer vinyl ones. (See photo.) To me, it's awkward to use them -- they're so short and taut that the motor unit "wibble-wabbles" back and forth with the motion of the wands and it's a bit annoying.

I love the aesthetics and appearance of the woven hoses but if this is going to be a daily-driver or one that you'll be using a lot, I think a coiled vinyl hose will be more practical and utilitarian.

He said the hose is in OK shape, so im going to use that until i save up enough to buy a new hose from hescoinc.com , i dont have enough for one from Aerus/Electrolux, but a generic will do fine! I should have it in about a week and a half or less! I hope it comes soon, so i have a new toy yo play with!

I have two Electrolux sliverado and love them both. I use mine at least once a week. Does have strong suction. I don't have any pictures of them. But one thing I would suggest is getting the sidekick for it.

Hose

Although the genuine Electrolux hose doesn't have the switch in the handle, the generic ones that do are of subpar quality. I have one and the tabs that hold it into the front cover stopped springing into place, meaning the hose won't stay in the machine. They do look genuine, but they are not. I think I paid around $45 for the generic and finally buckled down to get a genuine hose, which was around $125 from Aerus, so that one on eBay would be a great deal. Also, you won't want to use the PN4A on hard floors because it has no front wheels. It would scratch the floors. Just a heads up! Hope you enjoy the Silverado.

Just so you know the generic hoses don't work well with the Electrolux Sidekick. The electrical connectors are slightly different and don't fit in the Sidekick.

I dont use the powermate Jr much, the only reason i want a generic hose is for the switch. Nathan told me he will throw in an original pack of bags, and a written not for my files, saying he has gone through the entire motor. If the connectors fit, i plan on trying to use this vacuum with my Kenmore Powermate and Vice versa.

Gotta ask, since my only Electrolux is a Lx. Will the hose (woven that comes with it) have a switch for the power-head? The replacement will, but does the original? I havnt run an electrolux with the woven hose and a power head since about 2004, when I was 10 years old. I believe it was an ambassador. if the hose has no 'head switch', do i have to unplug it from the sheath to shut it off? I was never sure on that.
Thanks!
Andy

No switch

The hose won't have a switch for the power head. The PN shuts on and off with the vacuum. It wasn't really necessary to have a switch as the PN4/4A could not be used on hard surface floors. All you had to do to clean hard floors effectively is pull out the hose handle and pop it into the extra set of wands with the combo floor/rug tool attached.

yea, i figures. I want the switch since im picky about carpet groom lines (i deal with extreme OCPD) so i shut the head off frequently. Thats my deciding point on the generic hose, the switch.

the hook ring is a "storage ring" to hang the sheat/wand on the wall

The Silverado is what made me fall in love with Electrolux. Our childhood vac was a Diamond Jubilee so when I left home in 98 I purchased a brand new epic 6500 it was the mono tone gray one the last one the guy had it was his window display vac. 480.00 super deal. 16 years later my mom moved to Florida and I visited her used her vac and was determined to find a metal machine , they are so quiet so I waited and watched Craig's list finally found a Silverado for 25.00 the rest is history it's my daily driver 2 cats , it's the flat style handle . These machines were so well made any new vac made of plastic is just an embarrassment next to them . Happy vacuuming.

Similar story here Mike! I had the early plastic, meh? two motors later I was done. Found one that reminded me of the neighbors 1205, first machine I had used with power nozzle, loved that thing!Got mine in pawn shop in 89 for $60 I think. Needed a new hose and breaker for the power nozzle. Nothing since

Hello,

Are you still looking for an electric hose with a switch in the handle? I have a really nice one in a light gray color that I will be glad to ship to you. All I'm asking is that you cover the shipping cost, probably around $20.00.

I am cleaning up my workshop and am finding things I didn't remember having, including this hose.

Please let me know ASAP. If you don't want it I'll give it to someone else.
