Can it be done? Can you place a higher performance later motor in an earlier metal base Convertible? I have a plastic vac with a bad base and good motor and a metal base with a bad motor...can the power switch and everything hold up?

Yes to all of that

It will change the sound dramatically. Tom Anderson has done it,along with adding a CWP brushroll. Again, removing the beater bar also changes everything.
Best of luck to you.

I've successfully done it as well - I took a Decade 80 motor and swapped some parts from the original motor (used the metal fan and metal cooling fan), and the Decade 80 belt pulley and a CWP brushroll. I did have to fuss with the wiring just a bit to get it working properly, but I love my souped up Convertible, it's a beast!

I've seen them , heard them, even used them.

But, being a purist, I just can't bring myself to doing it to any of mine. They ARE beasts, though.

@firemnanbird what model metal base convertible did you upgrade I actually successfully used even the old style regreaseable bearing off such my 1076 and used a bayonet base bulb socket and mine is really cool. I can't wait to see yours. Here's a couple of pictures of mine using a 1076's base. More pictures are upon request.
