My Uncle threw my Electrolux out by mistake, so he got me an E-lux LX on Ebay. i havnt had it come in the mail yet, but I know it has a leaky hose. A new one is $20, but i would rather re-seal the woven one. Can someone tell me how to do it? I will post some images of it when it arrives
Thanks!

I've been told to get this stuff called plasti-dip (get the clear stuff) and paint it on the woven part of the hose with a brush. That's what other collectors have told me to do.

Your uncle purchased one of Electrolux Corporation's all-time classic cleaners for you--congratulations!

The Model LX was manufactured from 1952-55, and the similar-looking Model LXI (with wheels) was sold during 1955. It was the first and only Electrolux cleaner to feature the automatic bag ejection feature (some even ejected several feet).

The 4-pointed star-debossed covering was also used on the last Model 30s--whose longtime production of 13 years held the record for quite awhile until the current models (Lux Classic and Lux Legacy) surpassed it.

Resealing the original hose is a good idea to help maintain its original appearance and to go green by repairing instead of discarding or storing and replacing.

Here is another Vacuumland thread by a big-time Electrolux collector, Charlie Lester which explains the resealing process step-by-step: www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-...

More detailed Model LX and LXI info. also by Charlie on his personal website: 1377731.com/lux/luxlxs.html...

Let us know how it turns out when you find time to do it and post photos of the cleaner and its accessories if you can.

Best wishes!

P. S. Rubber Dip is the same as Plasti-Dip. Matte Clear was recommended by another poster.

Ill try it when it arrives. I may need a new hose, since im not that good with DIY projects, so ill see what kind of job it will actually be.

If you're intending on using this machine heavily, a replacement hose will serve you well!

Check on eBay for Rubber Dip--the pourable kind; not the spray. If you aren't a DIYer then see if you can find someone who is, because you'd save yourself a lot of money by repairing the old hose rather than purchasing a new one.

Well, i will get this hose sealed If i can, but buy a new one just in case. This will be my daily runner, as well as my Kenmore. The seller used it daily for 2 years and he said its very good. I will have to find somebody who can seal my hose, though

Fair enough--a good way to cover your bases.

I wonder if your uncle would be willing to give it a go? It's not too terribly difficult--just time-consuming at first (like anything else it goes quicker with practice). Just be sure to follow the directions carefully--including the prep.

By the way, there is a retaining ring inside the handle "cuff" that needs to be removed. I found an awl to work better than a screwdriver.

LOVE IT!

I went to my PO box at the post office (i prefer to have all my online purchases sent there), after work, and there was a note saying to pick up a package. I wrestled it into my van and opened it at home. It was filled with newspaper and air pocket spacers. The attachments were in a box and my machine was wrapped carefully in bubble wrap. It works. There is an extremely small leak in the hose, but too small to be worth fixing. I don't know if the ejector really works, but i found the switch to release the bag early. it doesn't have the cleaning selector, but it works like new!
the crevice, and hose are original. the rest of the attachments are not right, but im fine with them. i have another set of wands, a carpet tool, a dust-brush combo and crevice from my other Elux my uncle threw out, but they arnt pictured

Wow--looks great! Congratulations!

The black crevice tool (from the Model XXX) and wand sections are the only Electrolux attachments. The white ones appeear to be Eureka; but I'm clueless about the black floor nozzle--same with the wooden one that could be an earlier Electrolux one (e.g. Model XII) or another brand.

I'm glad the hose only has a small leak. It looks to be a replacement with the original handgrip.

I wonder, too, if your cleaner has been painted? The first versions had the name plate on the bottom, like yours, but had the yellow name badge with red lettering.

No matter what it's a classic Electrolux cleaner and came with a lot of useful tools. I'm sure you'll enjoy using it and having it in your collection.

Happy Electroluxing to you!

Thanks for the warm response. It isn't re-painted. All the later Lx's had the no color logo. See Charles Lesters page on the Lx in an above post ( 1377731.com/lux/luxlxs.html... )it explaines it all. It may be a replaced hose, but no matter. It works. The machine has that 'grandma's house' odor coming from it. It doesnt bother me, but my sisters it does. I love it! Its my daily runner. I have to be careful on wood floors with it. its a scratcher. i solve this by tying a soft rug to the rails. It looks odd but my floors are safe. Its a wonderful machine, and my uncle will be getting a nice dinner for finding it.
Let me know if you want some video of it, i will be puting it on my YouTube page any day
Happy Vacuuming!

Forgot to mention. The ejector arm that pushes the bag out works. i found the release switch for it. Weather it will work when the bag is full is another story...

Actually it probably is repainted. The white parts with it would indicate that it was a rebuilt machine done by Metropolitan in the 70's or 80's like the model 30 shown in this Aldens catalogue

Fully possible. I took off one of the Electrolux side panels and there was paint. Looks re don. Plus the new paint on the bottom is coming off. dosnt bother me, it will stay clean longer! I ran it again today for some time. the bag i put in yesterday (new) is about 1/4 full already! Going to find out if the ejector works pretty soon...

I saw that one on ebay, yes the vacuum was painted. It is an early LX hence the lack of a manual control valve, the covering over the body should be a blue-green plastic, the top should have polished metal.

The wooden floor brush is NOT Electrolux

Here's pictures of my early LX

You're welcome for the responses.

I appreciate information from Doug and Ray, as well. I am not knowledgeable about rebuilds or the tools that came with them.

I think it's a great cleaner and only mentioned the non-original or non-genuine parts, so you would know (in case you missed it on Charlie's website). Some, like myself, prefer everything original; but others, such as yourself, are just glad to have a good-running machine. To each his own.

Regarding the ejector mechanism, I read once in another thread that one can "feed" a Model LX or Model LXI toilet paper strips to fill the bag and check the mechanism. Setting your dial to 1 would hasten the mechanism's operation, so you wouldn't have to use too much of it.

As for the name plate on the later LXs and all the LXIs they were unpainted aluminum originally which is one clue that yours had been painted.

You may want to purchase a manual for it at some point, so you can become familiar with all the ways it can be used.

I will look into checking the ejector. It has no selector dial. Im fine with the tools I already have, but im preserving them. If anybody has an extra carpet/floor combo they will part with, i would gladly take it. If not, ill just get a new floor tool since i have another rug one. The Aldens tools are not to be used. They will be worth something some day. I just use whatever i have laying around. Id love a carpet/floor combo but it isnt cheap to buy a new one... I will look into a manual, but i woulnd count on my getting one...
Any information I can get would be nice
Thanks!

to quote "Setting your dial to 1 would hasten the mechanism's operation, so you wouldn't have to use too much of it."

The early ones didn't have a dial so how is he going to set it to 1 ?

Electrolux had a test plug for the LX and LXI that would go in the front opening to simulate a full bag to test the ejector. It's fun to pop it in the front and watch as the unit shuts off, the front drops and a second or two later the bag comes shooting out.

Later on they had a plastic test plug that you would put in to test the bag control valve on the AE thru present automatic units. You would start at fine dirt and dial back until the latch would pull down on the front door opening it. This usually took place around setting 3.

Thanks for the info. My ambassador didnt have the dial. Do you (or anyone else) know anybody who would part with a carpet floor combo? I can find a cheap one anywhere...it took me months to save up for a beautiful Grand Marquise (elux) on ebay, but i was out bid. Im still not happy i lost that one...money is not easy to come by for me so i need a good condition, but cheap combo tool

Post# 327140 , Reply# 21   6/17/2015 at 22:38 (3,228 days old) by ronni (USA)
@Ray

I got confused because of the name badge. I thought the yellow and red ones were smooth and the later aluminum ones--like Vacuumlad's were embossed. They must have been switched out unless I'm missing something.

I will say, though, that many of the early ones were retrofitted with the dial; so it's not a given that one is absent on them.

I need to mention that your corrections of my posts come across as patronizing (whether or not it is intended). When someone makes an error, as we all do, consideration of the golden rule "Do to others as you'd like them to do to you" is a good response. In this case, you could have just kept quiet and let Vacuumlad tell me that I missed the fact that his cleaner is not equipped with a dial. In the future, I'd appreciate more consideration and less condescension as I have afforded you.

@Vacuumlad

Regarding the combination tool if you don't get any responses from Vacuumlanders try checking with your local vacuum cleaner store(s). They sometimes get attachments with trade-ins and do not charge as much as eBay sellers--or so I've found. Thrift stores, garage sales, and Craigslist are also good possibilities.

Here is a list of conditions to check before you buy a floor/rug combo tool:

SWIVEL CONNECTOR

•The latch buttons, or protrusions, should be in good working order (they sometimes get rusty and/or worn and don't hold the cleaning part securely).
•The concentrator-that concentrates the air flow by closing off the part of the tool that isn't being used--should have a straight edge and cover the opening completely. It can get chipped which lessens the suction
•The wand lock on the swivel connector should work well. If it is rusty it can be WD-40'd. If the tab is broken off it will stay locked onto the wand--which may or may not be a problem as many Electrolux users store the tool on the wand anyway. Fyi ... if the swivel is scratchy- or squeaky-sounding it can be lubricated.

Major Differences:
-From 1954-1956 they were friction-fit without the wand lock; you just push and turn to secure on wands.
-From 1954-1979 they were metal. Afterward they were plastic.
-Some, since 1992, have had electric wand connectors instead of wand locks--they are incompatible with regular wands like yours

HEAD
•There should be no cracks in the plastic or tears in the bumper.
•The latch strikers should not be worn, or the latches will not hold.

BRISTLES
•They should be about a 3/8"-1/2" in length and flexible; although they can be changed out with replacements. Since 1999 or so the front bristles have been made with cut-outs--for better retrieval of larger contaminants.

After your purchase be sure to vacuum them out and then do so after each use. I have found that sliding the plain hose end (without a crevice tool or other attachment) back and forth a number of times until clean is effective and less time-consuming; you may have to occasionally use your fingers to pull out stubborn lint or hair. Keeping the bristles clean will make them more flexible and less likely to scratch the floor.

Ill check Craigslist, and Goodwill. My local shop it telling me that a $20 part would cost $69.92 to order when Kenmore wants $22 with shipping! I only go there for my bags now. If i dont see any on Craigslist I will contact a friend who works for Aerus, in case they had any trade-ins.
