So my girlfriend has had my Kirby Heritage 1HD at her apartment for about two and a half years and has recently begun to complain--with a few choice expletives--that it isn't working as well as it should. My only contact with it comes every few weeks when she gives me a haircut and I clean up afterward.

I noticed it was taking two, sometimes three passes to pick up the hair when it used to do it in one. After I was done, I took a look at the brush roll and found it to be completely wrapped with her long, brown hair. I pointed this out to her and she told me to take it with me and fix it.

I just finished cleaning it out and with all the gunk I removed, I was amazed it picked up anything at all. The hair-wrapped brush roll was only the tip of the iceberg. The ends of the brush roll were completely covered to the point that the brush roll was having difficulty turning. The belt shaft was so totally encrusted, it was hardly visible and the opening to the impeller was at least 75% blocked.

It's all cleaned out now and I even gave it a good polishing to boot. Now I've just got to decide whether she's getting it back ;)

She wouldn't get it back if it were mine!

I don't understand why folks can't take care of appliances. When I traded my lawnmower it looked like new after 3 years. My vacuums never get that bad...

Nobody would touch my two Kirbys, not even with a 10-foot pole!

Yeah, I'm thinking she's going to have to ask for it back and then we'll have a little discussion of proper vacuum cleaner maintenance. It's not exactly brain surgery and if she can't be bothered to do it, she doesn't deserve such a fine machine. Let her go to Walmart and pick up a $50 plastivac that she can then toss in the dumpster when it gets clogged like she did her Oreck XL.
