Well, basically just what things do you like when vacuuming?

I.E ~ I love hearing the beater bar on say, a Hoover Junior or hearing the agitation etc. I (for some odd reason) like hearing the wind down. I LOVE vacuums with really bright headlights. (This is aimed at uprights) I also like hearing when things rattle up. When using a Turbopower Total System I love hearing the pitch change when putting it into tools setting.

This applies to modern and vintage vacuums.

I look forward to hearing what else people like/love :)

Ooh, lovely thread idea Emma! :D

I like when you use either a Dyson DC07, DC14 or DC33 and you are using it normally, then you push it upright, the changeover valve makes a nice whistle and then diverts the suction, then WHOOSH goes the suction as it starts sucking from the hose XD

Also, I like when I suck something up and you can hear it go up the tubes.

I like when you vacuum he edge of a rug up and when you pull the vacuum back it gets sucked up and the cleaner head lifts up.

I love my vintage Kirby's and seeing their big puffy bags. I love seeing the satisfying carpet lines as you vacuum yourself out of a room. With my new-to-me Rainbow, I love seeing all the crud I just got out of my house, watching it pour into the toilet and flushing it away!

Me too! I like when I push the vacuum forward and the suction seals the head onto the carpet then you pull the machine back slowly and that is a perfect groom mark

Grooming.

The sound of dirt passing through the machine whether it's the sound of debris hitting a direct air machine's fan or debris passing through a hose, there's something just so satisfying about it.

Agitation. I like being able to feel the agitation of the machine as I'm using as it gives me the idea that i'm really deep cleaning.

Same with me-like the sound of stuff picked up going thru the vacuums fan and sometime the "thoop" of the stuff into the bag-esp with the NSS M1.You know the stuff was picked up-otherwise the feel and rattling of the debris going thru the hose and wands. Then the spin down of the motor-and seeing the bag slowly deflate-and of course it poofing up on start up.And yes,the vibration of the roller brush on the carpet! And with loose surface stuff-seeing it dance around before being picked up.Vacuums CAN be entertaining besides being useful for cleaning!

I do miss having my vintage Hoover uprights! I loved the hum of my Hoover Senior whenever it was switched on although I disliked the fact that it never cleaned properly to the edges. The Hoover Junior U1104 was better in those respects. Also the Junior could take a fair amount of pushing under low furniture which my Senior wasn't so good with - light beige colours seems to hide the scratches better than the blue hood on my old Senior.

I don't really care for the actual act of vacuuming very much. I'm not much of a clean nut - so I let Donnie do the housework. However, I do love hearing the 75th Anniversary Edition Rainbow start up. The brushless switched reluctance motor has a very unique sound as the field coils energize and make the armature spin.

The only other sound I enjoy with vacuums, is the sound of a Hoover model 700 starting. It has a sort of 'sing' to it as it starts. I can always tell a 700 by it's start up.

I can answer that! Litter box installed in enclosed garage over thick pile carpet! You can't sweep it up. Dirty litter gets the shop vac, clean litter just the upright. He has huge furry paws and it helps stop some getting tracked into the house, via the kitty door

First, AWESOME thread.

As an avid Kirby enthusiast, and with modern Kirby, I love the sound of the powerhead suction-sealing onto the carpet when it's lowered by toe-touch control. I guess that's the beginning of the agitation I'm hearing.

With my vintage Kirbys, I love the click of the power buttons and toe-touch controls, especially with my Kirby 515. I also love seeing the bag inflate so quickly! I have been known to unhook the bag and lay it on the floor prior to power-up. I find it amazing that the air flow from these compact machines can lift the entire bag up off the floor. So awesome!

And of course, I do love my Kirby lines on the carpet!

For an upright, I love the nice clean patterns left behind by my Hoover Bagged Platinum.

For my Miele canister, I love the sound of pieces of dirt travelling up the telescopic wand!

In both cases, I get this weird sense of satisfaction when I throw away the filled dirt bags! :-)

I like the sound of stones and stuff going up metal tubes on my cylinders. I like my Felix but I prefer my X1A. It just goes all around the house without stopping and feels seamless on the carpets. Bear in mind I have wool loop carpet, so I don't need a thorough clean, otherwise I'm in danger of ripping the carpet to shreds.

Post# 331157 , Reply# 48   8/7/2015 at 08:51 (3,177 days old) by Rvarley (illinois)
Sites and sounds

I like the seeing all the dirt and hair come out of the sani-emptor of the old kirby. Yes, the bagged vacuums probably pick up as much and they are cleaner, but I love seeing the dirt.

I also like seeing the dirt dumped from the Rainbow basin. And know that I'm starting with a clean vacuum every time. The smell is also so pleasant - unlike any of my other vacuums.

As for sounds, the new rainbow has a most unique sound when it starts up. And the sound of bubbling water is pleasant

I also like the sound the kirby makes when it is lowered enough to ''lock' onto the rug. I can see the rug being lifted. This would probably not be good for delicate carpets, but my carpeting is not delicate.

Do these guys clean better than the Mieles or Simplicity? Probably not. But they do get used a lot more frequently.

i like the powerful sound of air going through the hose

For me, I like connecting my central vacuum hose to one of my power units and hearing the powerful suction going through the hose. Since I live in an apartment and don't have central vacuum pipes, I've attached a utility valve to the in take of my central vacuum units. This way, you get the full power of the vacuum since there are no pipes. I also love hearing dirt getting sucked up through the long hose. I have all hard floors so don't use a power nozzle, but it's interesting to hear the dirt take the path through the long hose. Sometimes I will take one of my central vacuum units over to my girl friend's house and we will vacuum her place with it. Again, it's mostly all hard floors, and the powerful suction will sometimes grab her table cloth and not want to let go. When we vacuum her kitchen, we have to reduce the suction somewhat or those central vacuums will actually lift part of her floor up. I also enjoy having people put their hand at the end of the hose of those central vacuums and being amazed at how powerful the suction is, nothing like it in the world!

do you give your vacuums a name

Besides what everyone likes best about vacuuming, I thought I would expand it a bit, do you give any of your vacuums a nick name? I have for a couple of mine. My vacumaid garage vac pro is designed to give you the convenience of a central vacuum, but it doesn't use pipes, there's just a utility valve on the front of it. It has 740 air watts, I call that one the vac beast. I nick named my vacumaid sr-800 the grandfather because it has the largest diameter of all of my central vacuum units, it has to be that big to hold the 2 stage 8.4 motor. And then there's the intervac h 120, I call it the baby vac. It's a central vacuum, it's designed to be portable as well, definitely not as powerful as the others which is why I gave it that name. Some of my vacuums already have names, for example, I have a central vacuum unit called the flomentum, and then of course there is the barracuda, that's the most powerful one I have, it's 780 air watts and 151 water lift, believe it or not, it's very quiet still, it uses a Domel motor, which some think is actually better than what Ametek offers.

@N0oxy ~

I don't really know if you would class this as nick naming or not but,for my Panasonic vacuums I tend to call them "The panas" or "Pans" regardless of their model. With the Turbopowers sometimes I'll just call them "Turbos."

Hi

Newbie "member" here, although I have been reading the posts for a couple of years !

I was very interested to read "VacuumLovers" question about what we like about hoovering..and even MORE interested to see the replies, as a lot of them are the same as my likes too.

Ever since seeing my mum start hoovering all around me with her "Hoover Junior" and its firm, and warm inflated dustbag about 45 years ago (!!) I have loved the sound of the beater bar vibrating the carpet. I have also strong memories of that "rubbery/musty" smell that those older softbag uprights gave off. And again, like others have posted on here, I love the sound of grit chinking into the bag too. The BIG thing that I find interesting and appealing on any softbag upright is the inflated dustbag ! The larger the bag the more cool I find it. I have a small collection of unrefurbished uk softbags which rotate from time to time as they break down and I replace them lol.

All my life I have wondered WHY I love to see women hoovering and what happened in my childhood that sparked this interest ? But I cant honestly say I know why, apart from the fact that someone once suggested that seeing mum hoovering was kind of a "reassuring" thing to me, but as I got older it developed into more than that.

Whatever the reason, vacs have been a BIG part of my life since childhood and have given me lots of pleasure.

As a final note to "vacuumlover" and other ladies, I would love to know have THEY wondered why they like to see things like inflated dustbags, and also the vibrating noise of the beater bar on uprights ?

Regards to all on here and "xx" to "vacuumlover" !

Also, its getting a £1 nice old vac, using it when it doesnt work very well as it's not seen a belt in 20 years and a bag thats older than my driving license etc, then refurbishing it to as new as it could ever possibly be short of coming out the box, then using it again and feeling the difference! Can't beat that.

Any particular vacuums with separate brush bar motors parwaz786?

I've never had any issues with the vacuums I've owned that have separate brush bar motor.

Dyson DC24's are the most problematic.

Dc24 brushrolls are a pain! Is a straight 50/50 between the pcb and motor too, and you pray the pcb has 330v coming out of it as thats the cheaper option!

Yep! Glad DC25 PBC's don't really fail, it's either the loom, very very easy peasy to fix or the brush motor.
I hope the DC50 brush motor is more reliable than the DC24 and DC40 one

Your wrong, yes I repair & restore equipment both for myself and others. I also collect different Vintage Electrical / Electronic equipment, but that's for the pleasure of restoring them to working order & as near original condition as possible, not to sit on a forum & wax lyrical about how they sound or pick up etc.

To me Vacuuming is a chore that has to be done, like taking out the trash.

So as my original answer, my favourite part is when it's over. Then I can sit down with a cuppa or get on with something more important.

I will never understand why anyone who collects/restores/is enthusiastic about vacuums doesn't like using them. That's like being a fan of classic cars but then not driving them.

Hey Turbo500

I hate vacuuming period, the noise goes through me. Years ago when I was a kid, I could sit & listen to the cleaner or washing machine ( twin tub in those days) & happily drift off to sleep but not anymore. I repair old power tools for people as well & get a real buzz from bringing them back to life, but do I get excited about using a rock breaker that I've restored to life & listening to the noise it makes or the way it chisels stone ? Not a chance.

The sound of air moving throught the attachments that shhhhhh sound and occasional ping ping shhh sound of dirt beaign pick up in the hose or wands .The fact my floor tool is suck to the floor and i have to work to push it around i love strong air flow and suction .Manual height adjustment i prefer to judge the height my self.Big bags i can clean longer .Long hose and cords so nice .Older machine they last longer .

Sad:

I'm a member of many forums for collectors & restorers of different items, yes we will spend time discussing a technical part of a machine or the best way to repair damage or locate a fault or maybe re-finish say a  Vintage radio. But never before have I come across a group of supposed adults, that will write reams on how they love the sound of dirt being sucked up a vacuum cleaner hose or what a brush roll bearing sounds like when a machine winds down. I was told that this was a forum for serious collectors / restorers of vacuum cleaners, obviously not.

Alright,calm your tits!

If what you see on here isn't "to your liking" then leave. Nobody forced you to partake in this thread, now did they? I only started this thread because I wanted to see what every other collector likes.

So now that makes us from what you're saying "immature." Please, explain further.

I was told that this was a forum for serious collectors / restorers of vacuum cleaners, obviously not.

It is. But as I'm sure you'll find elsewhere, many collectors / restorers also like to USE their finished projects, not have them sat gathering dust (or not, as it were) not doing anything.

Using your example, what the heck is the point of restoring a vintage radio for it then not to be used? Also bear in mind that the example you've given has no moving parts and in use is not particularly "interactive", for lack of a better word.

What's the point of collecting something, fixing it up and restoring it if you're not going to use it? That's the fine line between collecting and hoarding.

People discuss ALL aspects of vacuum cleaners on this site - from repair and restoration of vintage machines to the use and performance of modern machines, to the history of a brand and how cleaners have evolved over time. It's inclusive of everyone's interests and if you don't find a particular thread or topic interesting, the simple solution is to not comment on that thread, but input on other area's of collecting that do interest you. There has to be an element of diversity and inclusion, right?

Incidentally, I've been a part of the vacuum collecting/enthusiast scene for 10 years now and never found anyone who doesn't actually enjoy using their restored cleaners.

There's 2000 members on this forum, so clearly we're doing something right.

brush roll bearing sounds like when a machine winds down

Nowt wrong with that, shows a well restored/cared for machine when you get a smooth wind down.

I dont always use machines after I've refurbished them. Yes it's stupid, but after all that hard work that we all put in, why not?

It's why I dont get many NIB machines, as I would feel bad for using them/damaging them after so many years of pristine-ness. An already battle scarred machine thats been refurbed, not so bad!

Normally though, the first thing to go is the supressor so I feel safe using it!

Chris puts it well here.

I am not wrong though, Tech12 - I didn’t join this site to coo over blue prints and diagrams. I joined this site because I used to have quite a lot of vintage vacuums and found pleasure in cleaning my home with than noisy modern vacs. I restored mine and collected others to restore them to use them.

At times I would sell some of them to others. It is perfectly part of the course to discuss motor noise and everything else that moves or is placed on a vacuum cleaner. As Chris also states quite correctly, there are many members on this forum. Look around the site as there are plenty of threads that have been created by members; you could even create one yourself.

That's if of course, if you have time in between sitting on a chair and enjoying your cuppa.

Tech12, this is the description of the site from the home page:

The website and social network for experts, collectors and fans of vintage and brand new vacuum cleaners, floor polishers and all other floor care products. If you are looking for advice on a new vacuum or you like to keep a clean house, you've found the right site!

There are also different forums within the site for different topics - "vintage" for topics regarding machines 20 years old or more, "contemporary" for vacuums made in the last 20 years and "household" for other household topics.

As you can see from the description and the layout of the site, this covers a wide range of vacuum related topics.

I like the vintage videos that the "HuntleyArchives" have put on You Tube. I know that they have probably been mentioned before. It reminds me of the past when my gran had Hoover uprights, the sound of the beater bars on carpets, that certain thrum sound, but also the warning that the belt was probably about to give up!

Sebo: Yes you were wrong, because I dared have a different opinion you posted a sarcastic reply that you could always tell the difference between a Repairer & Collector. I.e in your opinion I'm a Repairer not Collector.

Vacuumlover: Until the Owner of the site tells me to leave or I decide to do so of my own accord then sorry but I'll be staying, without reference to you or any other member.

Turbo500: I have no problem with people using they're restored items, I use many of mine, some daily while Repairing other Vintage equipment. Originally I made a reply to a question asked on the forum, Because I dared have a different opinion to others I got a sarcastic reply from Sebo_lover about my being a Repairer not a Collector & I responded to that.

As for the rest of it: Yes I do find it very strange that people will write long paragraphs about the way they love the sound of grit travelling up a tube. Or that they love emptying a cleaner bag, or the sound a brush roll makes etc strange to say the least.

If that offends peoples sensibilities then so be it.

But I think it's time to let it drop now, don't you ?.

Tech12, different views and opinions are always welcome on here. As I stated, there needs to be an element of diversity between us and it makes for a more interesting forum.

Yes I do find it very strange that people will write long paragraphs about the way they love the sound of grit travelling up a tube. Or that they love emptying a cleaner bag, or the sound a brush roll makes etc strange to say the least.

If you find it strange, perhaps you're in the wrong place. I'm a member on both here and autowasher, and in my years I notice it's the subtle differences between machines that people really notice and appreciate, such as the different sound a brushroll makes or the way a different headlight is positioned etc..or in the case of autowasher, the different motor sounds and wash rythms of different washing machines.

The best example I can give is driving a classic car - they say every car feels different to drive, well it's the same with vacuums. It's only natural and to be expected that things like the way a particular brushroll sounds or even the way a design of certain bags fills up should be and will be discussed on a vacuum cleaner collectors forum.

If you came on here and found 200 threads about lightbulbs, I'd understand where you're coming from. But given this is a forum for vacuum collectors it seems strange to me that anybody would be suprised about this kind of discussion.

As was said above, if it doesn't interest you, don't comment. Stick to what does tickle your fancy.

Back on topic

turbo500's profile picture

There's a few things I really love about vacuums and vacuuming. I love history, so one of my favourite things is looking at brochures and catalogues from years gone by and looking at how the vacuum market has evolved over the years. I think vacuums are very underappreciated these days, but it wasn't very long ago that owning a vacuum was a status symbol. The vacuum would be something you had out on display to make sure visitors noticed that you were well off enough to have one. I'm big on brand history too, but that's for another conversation.

I appreciate different designs as well and love looking at how the different manufacturers are designing their machines. They may well all be designed to do the same job, but the differences in how that job is acheived really fascinate me.

And like Emma said (at least I think it was Emma), I love getting rid of a full bag. It's quite satisfying disposing of all the muck and filth, and with the Sebo bags, the bag can be packed full so it's like a brick by the time it comes to replace it. It hits the bottom of the bin with a bang!

And finally, being a bit of a cleanfreak a massive clean freak, I love the cleaning process and especially the finished result, but that's not really limited to vacuuming.

It was partly me who said some of that. Someone else (can't remember who, sorry!)said the comment on Sebo bags. But yes,I do like throwing a full bag away.

Also ~ Thank you for your input. :)

Not that I have a pony in t his race. . .

But. Since the title of the thread is "What do you like/love when vacuuming."
To state that you love the sound of dirt and grit going up the tube is totally appropriate.

Now if it had been "what do you like about repairing/restoring a vacuum" then the dirt grit part may not be on topic. and vise/vers.

Just my opinion.

For the record, again off topic, I also like to mow the lawn, till the garden, trim with an edger. All not because I enjoy manual labor, but because I enjoy the accomplishment of getting the task done, and well using power tools.

Vacuuming is the same. I see progress, I feel accomplishment, and as I have stated before for me it is relaxing as I can get lost in the sound of the vacuum and be in my own world.
