All you need is a step-up voltage transformer. Since you live on the Pacific Coast not far from major shipping ports, it should not be a problem for you to find a 220volt electronic store - probably in Seattle. There are many Americans - civilians and diplomats and service men who need to live overseas in Europe and these stores sell everything from TV's to toothbrushes that run on voltages other than the North American 120volt standard. These stores also have transformers that will allow you to use a British vacuum in your home.

Yes, but you will need a step up transformer. Also old Dysons are very brittle so will need to packaged very well, especially cos it's going to be on a plane shipped from the UK, or possibly a ship maybe, which Dyson do u want?

Another option...

Any UK vac should work fine from a 220v US outlet as used for dryers etc- you would need a plug to fit the outlet and a length of cord attached to a UK female extension socket.

OK, I recommend the Dyson DC05 or DysonDC08. The DC05 is a nice design and it's not the loudest Dyson either. Has good suction, about 255 AW. The DC08 has more suction than a DC07 or DC14 at 330 AW and is a very good machine for daily use. It is surable too, but not that durable enough for something like shipping :P Henry's are also a very good example of a British vacuum, they are unique and hardly change

IKR I love Henrys! They are cute, have excellent suction& airflow, take months to fill their HEPA bags up, are very quiet, are very durable, are eco friendly, use little energy, have variable power and are British made :D Three of my family members have Henry's as far as I am aware of :) All of them are fantastic machines! They are also very cheap, like £110 for a lovely shiny new Henry instead of £450 for a Dyson cinetic :o

I literally live smack dab in the middle of America. It is quite likely that I have the largest collection of 240 V vacuum cleaners in a private collection in the USA. If you have an electric dryer outlet, you can use a British machine. Here are my three favorite, it took a lot to get them over here, and they are very rare models even in England.

Vacuumdude, you may find many UK sellers are reluctant to send to the US simply due to inexperience. They wont know who to use to send it economically and many wont pack the machine properly anyway.

If you do find one on UK eBay that you want from a 'UK only' seller, I would be happy to have one delivered to our shop, check its packed/repacked properly and send it on to you with Fedex or whoever, or you can arrange collection.

Oh yeah I forgot about Manchestervacs! lol sorry, but they are like the BEST Dyson dealers in the UK. They are also independent and they work really hard. They are top notch and they are so successful. They would even send you a refurbished Dyson of your choice to the USA!

I wish you best of luck! I had been toying with the idea of trying to import a few early dysons for my collection and it is difficult.

I really wish I had tried harder. There really aren't many machines I am specifically looking for anymore, aside from a nice dc01, 02, or 03. Seeing as I will start collage this fall, importing vacuums this summer would not be a smart investment. Oh well, perhaps I can try again in a few years.

Again, best of luck!

Scott

I second the manchester vacs recommendation.

Mainly because the cost is the easy part. You then need to package it up properly to ensure its not broken, and that means bespoke packaging. Plus a bulk shipping account, and experience of shipping abroad, which mvacs has in spades!

Good luck in your search!

I would love to get an American red and silver full gear DC14, the purple/orange/silver DC14 with a dark blue/purple body, the red and purple DC14, the DC17 and DC28 along with an American DC07 :)

Here's what I do ...

tazcatsdad's profile picture

Because I like to buy vacs from the UK also, I've established a mail forwarding account with a firm in Dover, Kent that will receive parcels for me and then forward them to my US address.  This gives me a UK based address that sellers won't be reluctant to ship to.  The firm I use is called Britsuperstore: the owner, Richard Price, does a wonderful job with the forwarding service and I'm quite pleased with it.  You'll find a link to his website below.

As for payment: I opened a 2nd PayPal account in pounds sterling, and I can simply transfer money from my US dollar PayPal account to the UK pounds sterling account as the need arises.

As for electrical requirements: I don't have an electric dryer, but I do have a voltage converter --  I bought one on eBay that could handle up to 3KW.  Hope this information helps you!
