Hey guys first post on this site. Figured I would give a back story to this. Bought a royal vacuu, off ebay. Dont know too much about it. Seller told me it was serviced recently asked if he had any trouble with it. He was a good help considering i never bought one before. Came here in a few days. Ran like a champ. Gave it to my mother and it went downhill from there. At first the light would come on, but it would'nt start UNTIL you bump start. Now just the light comes on. I figured it was either a loose connection or the motor was shot. I don't know. I plugged it into diffferent outlets as well but to no avail. There is a sticker that prints... "Stark's Vacuum"

Sounds like bad connection or sticking/ worn brushes. Great machines.

Vacuum Trouble

83 Royal---Your light works. So that tells you your plug cord switch light are good. You have power to the motor. The electric connection to the motor is the motor brushes as Suckolux said. there are 2 caps 1 on each side of the motor unscrew caps pull carefully on spring. If they don't come right out take it to a shop. Carbon brush should be 1/2'' or more--- if less--- put in new brushes.

That Royal you have, which was sold through the Portland, OR-based dealer Stark's Vacuum as you see on the bag, could be any one of the following:
Model 880 (light blue)
Model 903 (red)
Model 5000NA (gray bag/black trim)
Model 901 (gray bag/black trim)

It is a 903 model. I pulked off the cap. There is a plastic threaded cap and an o-ring. One side you could finger loosen, other side had to be used with a flat head driver. Tightened both of them and it runs perfectly fine. Thanks for the input!

What is the serial number on your machine?

I'm hinting at it being an April 1986 build, D86F006229.

Thank you again!

motor brushes

Did you pull the brushes? If not do it. a good chance the seller did the same as you. That's why he got rid of it. It's telling you something is wrong. It may be getting contact now but not for long. Just because the cap was louse isn't the reason it didn't run. Messing with it probably moved the brush to get some contact. Now is the time to fix it. Doing what your doing could damage the armature. Then you won't be able to fix it. You will have to take it to a shop $$$$$ Pull the brushes ck them out. It may be a good thing for you to take it to a good shop and get it fixed right. That may save you some $$$$$$$ I think this repair is over your knowledge. Sorry-----Greg

motor brushes

PS--You said vac had been serviced. Either they didn't ck the brushes or they just put in new ones and didn't seat them, and its all ready gone through the brushes.----????? with out ck the brushes and armature you won't know what's going on--------Greg ----It didn't fix It's self--they never do
