Hello:

I am PUZZLED. I just found a PN-1 in a thrift (along with a 1205), and it's very noisy, due to a badly worn brushroll bearing. I know new bearings are readily available, but I cannot for the life of me see how to get the old bearing off and the new one on. The problem is on the gear wheel end of the brushroll. While the gear wheel and its shaft pull out of the end of the brushroll easily, the bearing and a little sleeve are held onto the shaft by a little pair of "ears"; there seems to be no way to remove the bearing or to put another one on. What am I overlooking here? I'm attaching a little sketch to show what I mean. This bearing must be replaced; its hole that the shaft passes through is worn to a very wobbly oval shape, instead of round like it should be.

Sandy:
to get the bearing off u need to work the little shaft,,that u called ears out of the main shaft. An ice pick or sturdy small nail, and a pair of small vice grips and WD-40.
Be careful and paitent as it takes some working but it will come out of there. On some of them the little ears were not a solid piece of metal but rather a rolled piece. Just take care when u drive it out or pull or both whichever works.
Hope this helps.
Robert

One More Question:

Robert:

Thanks! Where does that little sleeve come into the picture? Is it a spacer to keep the bearing a certain distance from the "ears"?

also
when you took the brush out of the housing, there would have been a flat little piece of metal with one screw holding the brush ends,,,,,,when you put the brush back in with the new bearing MAKE SURE THE LITTLE FLAT PIECE OF METAL IS ON THE BEARING WITH ITS LITTLE PROTUSION FITTING IN THE GROOVE ON THE BEARING...One for left side and one for the right side, they must be in the groove or the bearing will not stay put.

Thanks. I had the bearing groove/retainer thing figured out, but it's always nice to have a more expert person confirm that I was right.

If this goes well, I may be looking for a new hood for this PN-1, meaning the turquoise plastic top cover. This one's pretty doggy. We shall see.
