In 1956, Sunbeam launched the Dual Deluxe, the most powerful canister you could buy. Put HOOVER and everyone else (except Apex's Strato Cleaner) to SHAME. This machine's suction fan was as big as a dinner plate. 95 inches of water lift. The 11 amp motor blew thousands of 10 amp fuses that most homes were wired with at the time.

In addition, my Dual Deluxe has the optional Turbine Brush. The turbine spins around in a circle, driving the brush. The suction is so strong, you can't hardly stop the brush. As good as any electric power nozzle.

Just love the 1956 color scheme. And how they wrote the words Dual Deluxe. Such a GREAT vacuum. Model 630. Extremely rare today, the motor turned so fast and had so much suction, they tended to have a shorter life than other machines. Most Dual Deluxe cleaners only ran for about 20 years before they 'gave up the ghost'. This one still runs Perfectly.

Can't wait to show my fellow vacuum cleaner collectors when they visit the world's only Vacuum Cleaner Museum in Saint James, Missouri, the second weekend of June. No cost to come to the convention, no uppity 'banquet night', no cliques. Just fun with friends and vacuums.

That is a beautiful machine! Who knew they had turbine power nozzles way back then!

Sunbeam's Turbine Brush predated the PRECO turbo brush. The Turbo Cat (a current turbine brush for the Central Vacs from Vac U Flo) is based on the Sunbeam Turbine Brush.

The Turbine Brush also had a carpet height adjustment (two position) as well as a geared belt and stainless steel soleplate.

That's really something! I didn't know Sunbeam had set any real landmark accomplishments in vacuum history. This was fun to learn about.

1956 Sunbeam Dual Deluxe

Tom,
I agree with Patrick.
So much more interesting than all the plastic made in china uprights today.
A friend had one of those Sunbeam's and I DO remember it had very strong suction!
Not sure what model but it was that color combination. No turbine brush.
Love the unique style of the tools. Nothing generic looking in your pictures.
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice machine!

What a great, pristine machine. It's so interesting that the most powerful vacuums weren't necessarily the best selling. I bet it sure is neat to use a vintage vacuum with that much sheer power!

Consumer reports rated it the number one vacuum cleaner. They said the suction was so strong it cleaned almost as well as the upright vacuums with rotating brush. Certainly every bit as good as a Hoover.

Tom, the Dual Deluxe and Touch and Lock are both absolutely beautiful! I remember seeing them in the stores and catalogs when I was a kid, but never had a chance to run one. Definitely was a unique and original design back then, and I remember later models in blue and chrome or just blue, and I think maybe a green one? But as popular as they were, I don't think I remember anyone I know having one back then.

The blue and chrome Touch 'N Lock was the late 60's version. It sure is cool looking. Like you Jeff, I never knew anyone who actually owned one. Only Dual Deluxe I've ever seen has been in Mike Pletcher's and Hans Craig's collections.

Sunbeam

That looks just like a turbine nozzle I used to have!!
Tom is right. The Dual Deluxe started as a quality, powerful vac with good atts and a color matched bag to store them in.Even though later SB canisters had cordwinders the motor changed and even attachments were cheapened.
I still have many SB bags from years past to no 'real' customers ever asked for.

I think they look very modern for 1956. Way ahead of anything we had in the UK for years.

The Dual Deluxe is a super cool vacuum. I found one in okay shape at a sale a few years ago; it's been sitting in my "awaiting restoration" pile since. But knowing how much of a rarity it is, I do want to give it an overhaul at some point. Mine came with the little tool baggie and most of the tools. My grandparents had one of these in the 60s, there were still some Sunbeam attachments hanging around theer house when I was a kid. I remember my grandmother telling me that she hated it, because of its round shape, it would get caught on furniture legs, and she would have to give it a good kick or tug to get it to follow her. I'll have to ask my mom if she remembers when they got that Sunbeam. I'll have to dig mine out and give it a day at the spa one of these days.

I'm struggling to find anything that dates the Dual Deluxe earlier than late 1959/1960. I did some googling and found some cool ads, though - as well as a shot of product placement in a 1960 episode of 'What's My Line' (follow link for full episode). 1956 seems too early to me, but others may know better. I know Morgan also has one that's absolutely pristine. I know he's shared photos of it in years past.

First ad came from a May 1960 LIFE, second was a late 1959 Newspaper, third was another late 1959 Newspaper. Screenshots are from What's My Line - May 8, 1960 (Vacuum appears within the first 30 seconds).

Love this machine! I have had 2 of them over the years. Min also had the turbo nozzle. Hey Tom I saw at one point another of these turbo nozzles in the same color but was slightly different. If I remember right Billy Lipman bought it when we were in MN.

I don't have a youtube account, but, at the Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Convention, the second weekend in June, at the Vacuum Cleaner Museum in St. James - I'm sure any number of my friends who already have videos up on Youtube, would be glad to film it. The Sunbeam is not loud, yet has tremendous suction. The Turbine Brush is also pleasing to the ear when running.

Since when...

hooverboy81's profile picture
Since when did you put any stock into what Consumer Reports says about a cleaner? You've called them "communist reports" on many, many occasions. Not bashing, just interested to know why this rating wasn't deemed "communist ".

This was one of the few cleaners in that particular report that were in the correct positions within the ratings. In that same issue, they rated the Electrolux AF only "fair", and put the Apex Strato cleaner in the middle (despite it having one of the best rug tools ever made). The Air-Way model 88 was at the bottom of the ratings.

They only got one machine correct. There were many other machines rated along with the Sunbeam, who's ratings do not jibe with history

So out of ALL the years Consumer Reports has been publishing ratings of appliances, it just so happens they finally got it right... just once...in 1959/60 with this one and only cleaner? Wow... You've also said some manufacturers paid for favorable ratings (airway and Hoover would not), does that in turn mean Sunbeam paid for this rating?

No. Communist Reports also got it 'right' in 1970, when they rated the Electrolux 1205 and Model L as the first and second highest in the ratings. Rarely did they get even one model correct in the positions, but they did get the Sunbeam correct (Yet did not get the Apex correct, which should have been second in the ratings). So, in total, even the report with the Sunbeam at the top, wasn't 'correct' totally. Just on one model.

Toms right...

Consumer reports IMHO rated products on how much of a donation the company would give them,..sometimes they did ok and sometimes it was a joke, an example of this was in the mid 60s they rated a Maytag washer best, they said it handled a large load better than most and washed better than most, they rated a Norge only average in washing ability and said it would not handle as large a load as most machines, now I will agree that a Maytag was more reliable, but a Norge will outwash it by a great margin and will certainly handle a much bigger load than the Maytag, I love to read them, but I don't believe many of their observations...the biggest joke EVER was in 1936 they said a GE, AV1 upright was a better cleaner than a Hoover 150!!!ANYONE knows a 150 was one of the all time best uprights ever made.

I have all the machines communist reports has rated. The ratings have nothing to do with machines I like personally. It has to do with history. Something I work with everyday.

Excellent point. I was surprised to see that rating as well! Many say it was "over engineered", but I personally feel that it set the stage for cleaners in the future. Way ahead of its time for 1936!

Tom- congrats. There is something so awesome about FACT based history.

Yes. That was my point. When you have the ACTUAL machines that were rated, along with the magazine's ratings from that time, comparing the rating to the actual performance is always eye opening. There were very few instances where the actual rating matched the performance. The Electrolux 1205 and the Sunbeam are two examples where, compared to every thing else offered at the time, CR "got it right".

sunbeam dual deluxe

I've seen this vacuum at the museum, it was so far ahead of its time. Much more powerful than anything else at that time, a turbo brush, it would clean better than many vacuums made today. Here's an awesome idea, try the Tacony Volt with that sunbeam, that would make one mean cleaning machine. Though the turbo brush was good, the Volt would probably clean even better.

the volt

Tolivac, what vacuums have you tried your volt on so far, and what were the results? That's my biggest pet peeve about the guardian platinum, nonstandard wand, and even a nonstandard electric connector.

Post# 360945 , Reply# 42   10/15/2016 at 01:16 (2,748 days old) by tolivac (Greenville,NC)

I would have to find a way to adapt the Volt wand to the TriStar and 'Lux wands.I might try the "adaptor" that comes with both of those to see if the Volt would fit.So far the favorite vacuum I use the Volt with is the NSS M1 or the central vacuums.I have been playing around with some other new vacuums.Strange how these come in batches?

Early TriStar Compacts could be used directly with the Volt.Just have to drag my older ones out to try the Volt with them.Currently I am using an old Compact hose with my Volt on the NSS M1.Works GREAT!!!Kinda like hearing the stuff picked up going thru TWO fans! You know the job got done!
