A discussion about this particular model started in one of the threads on the off-topic forum... So, I was inspired to go pull mine out, and snap some pictures. I forgot what a wonderful machine this is!

Marty Rocha gave this to me a few years back... after I had mentioned that I had never seen one, and would love to have one someday. Unexpectedly, he shipped it to me. I nearly passed out when I opened the box! Thanks again, Marty... it's a beauty! And years later, it's still loved!

Control board powered up...

Ready to go, in "standby mode"

The handle/controls.

This is a replacement hose... and is very much like a Eureka hose... (the texture and style of the hose).

I've never seen an original (beige) hose with the thumbwheel.

Power switch and rheostat.

The Tools... under the lid.

Even these are European-looking.

And Finally...

The bag, underneath the tools.

The Hoover "Type L" bag. These are still very plentiful.
I don't think that in my 5 years working at Hoover, we ever sold one of the three packages of "L" bags that we had in stock.

Must not have been a good seller...

Spec sheet one more time

One of our pictures of the day...

Here's the original hose. Looks kinda heavy to me...

I took a video of it running just now, but need to head to work.
Stay tuned, I'll upload it to YouTube this evening, after work (I work til 10)...

In the meantime, "discuss."

They are rare, beautiful machines. And you're right about the bags - every vac store that I have visited has original packages on the wall.
The Achilles heel of the vacuum is the plastic hand grip on the hose. It will snap if dropped on a hard surface or stepped on. The hose that came with my machine fractured at the retainer ring and it is useless other than operating the motor.
They are very powerful and seem to leak less dust than a Dimension.

You have to have the cleanest carpets in NC!!!

I might have to fight Charlie (and Todd), Mark T., Hans, and Ron J. for that position!!
But I'm sure I'm somewhere in the running!

It's a very nice machine Fred, do you know if a range of these were sold, or just the one model? In Europe as the Sensotronic there were at least five variations available at any one time. I wonder in which part of the world they were marketed as the Automatic?

Those hoses were indeed very heavy, so I've heard, and also very expensive to replace, quite the Achilles heel of this cleaner. This version is quite odd, in that the wands use the old style clip instead of locking rings, which every Euro Senso had.

It's great to have that though, this type of cleaner is pretty rare over here, they must be like hen's teeth on your side of the pond!

WOW!

That hose is beautiful!!

I wonder if a foreign hose would work on a domestic machine..?

Your powerhead is neat, too! What's the brushroll like?

it has the same brushroll as late Junior uprights/turbopowers, you can put in it the classic metal brushroll with beating bars and brushes.
The original brushroll is the same as the us powernozzles( 4 rows of bristles and integrated beating bars, like on Concept one etc. but smaller!

Hi Fred, classic machine in action there, love the power of the motor when turning up the speed sounds like a jet turbine, the first generation hoses where very cumbersome and where prone to splitting frequently, the later grey hose you have is rather sturdy albeit not that "Flexible" but perfect for large area cleaning....was very surprised to see it made and shipped from France....seems they where all made there, enjoy it, Mike

Hi Tommy, do you have the 5 full set of these vacs?? I love the colours, lights , bells n whistles...nothing like that around now!!!

Heres a few pics!!!

that looks like a mean little power nozzle. all the suction concentrated in a compact nozzle and that monster brushroll. looks like an excellent cleaner.

Hoover Sensotronic Audio 300

Here's Hoover's only talking vacuum cleaner and the third series of the Sensotronic range. This one has the same power hose as Mike's system 50.

It has a very posh English lady's voice !!!!

Mark

Sorry about the poor pic quality

Hello!
Chester,
the Sensoronic range is my favourite from hoover European production of the Eighties. The eariest Sensotronic series( to which the "electronic 1000" shown in this post belongs was made of 5 models, two of which with Electrkinetic power nozzle. the first model was Mod S 3126, in red/black with cream tools, straight suction canister, 900 watts motor, no electronic power adjustment; the second was mod. S 3126 in two tones green and cream tools, electronic power adjustment on the vacuum cleaner; the third was mod.S 3132,two tones brown and cream tools, no powernozzle, electronic power adjustment on the handle of electrified hose ( just like mine and the one shown in the advertisings in the us); the fourth was mod. S 3130 in cream/dark brown had the same electronic power adjustment as the second but featured a lighter electrified hose(very similar to the ones used on Celebrities) and cream/brown power nozzle; the last and top of the line was the dark brown mod. S 3134 with same features as mod. S 3132 with brown power nozzle. Later, in 1984, there was a little restyling: hoses and tools were made in brown and in the three deluxe models chrome extension wands.
In 1985 a new Sensotronic range was lounched and your Total system 50 was the top of the line. A new electrified hose was introduced and the handle grip became more comfortable and Total system models still eatured the wonderful ELectrokinetic power nozzle.
The evolution was the introduction of a diferent power nozzle, the so called "Turbo 300": it was great because it featured a sort of evolution of the brushroll of Turbopowers but smaller in diameter, wider than the previous and in general the powernozzle was much lower.
I personally own two mod S 3134, 1 S 3130, 1 S3132 and 1 S 3128. I'm getting a S 3126, of the later series I just have a pair of Sensotronic System 11 and a Total system 50 in light blue( uncomplete and not working)
Unfortunately these vacuum cleaners were not very popular because of their extremely high price, so they're sadly very hard to find.

Hey Fred!

Thats a great looking Hoover you got there! Wink! I loved the you tube video!

Mike, Tommy and Simon! Thanks for posting pix of your Hoover! I LOVE the look of the hoses and the powernozzles! I wish we had that style here in the US. I like the compact look of them!

Mark, I would love to have an audio Hoover but with Majel Barrett's Star Trek computer voice! Can you actually hear the voice while the vacuum is running?

Marty

Audio Hoovers

The first time I was at the Hoover Historical Center... in like 1993... they had an Audio Hoover. They somehow had it rigged so it ran for just 10 or 15 seconds, then shut off and said something like "The bag is full" or "Check the belt" It was very cool... and that was the only time I saw it.

I want to say it was from England. I remember it was completely black in color. It may have even been one just like that which Mike posted pictures of above.

Hoover 'Sensotronic'

Caution is advised when using this cleaner; the motor has a tendency to burn out. Bag had to be changed regularly; motor filter was washable.

If I remember correctly, the 'System 2'-onwards have two-stage motors. The stationary baffles between the two rotating fans, is made of thermoplastic. During prolonged use with a clogged bag (even moderately used/half full); the motor gets hot and the aforementioned baffles melt, then scrape against the fans, then get flung through the motor, and finally expelled via the exhaust diffuser.

I should know; it happened to our's. Twice.

Fan/armature assemblies were available at reasonable cost, as opposed to the complete motor.

Bag check indicator was rather useless; it never indicated the bag was full; would not register when cleaner was stood on end (magnet/Reed switch). It only registered a clogged hose or tube.

Wasn't there also the 'System 25, 35, etc'?

Ozhoover: 'Audio 300'
That's the cleaner I saw on BBC tv's "Tomorrow's World" science programme, circa 1987/88. The presenter was using it, then it conked out, played a short tune, then uttered "Hose is clogged, clear the blockage." He then dislodged the bag, closed the lid and "Bag is not correctly fitted" was spoken.

There are apparently 4 spoken phrases; the two aforementioned, plus "Bag is full" and "Have motor checked by qualified service agent" (or words to that effect).

I've been meaning to add these pictures....

...and with our record snow I'm stuck at home with time on my hands.

Here are photos of my two machines, a Hoover S3231 Electronic 1000, and a private label Phase IV. The history on the Phase IV is very sketchy, but here is what I've heard-

A Florida entrepreneur contracted with Hoover in the mid 80's to make these machines under the Phase IV label. His small band of salesmen made door-to-door calls in Florida and sold them somewhere between $700-1000. Unfortunately, a nice machine was being sold by a company with little scruples: they tended to prey on the elderly population and used hard sales tactics. Eventually, this came to the attention of the Florida Attorney General and the company was shut down.

This may or may not have any truth to it, but I do know that they weren't sold very long and are very scarce.

Eluxca

The "Phase IV" power nozzle...

...is (was) identical to our UK "Turbo 500" power nozzle. It featured the 'activator' agitator; a lighter duty version of the "Conquest", "Turbopower", "Turbomaster" agitator.

The snapped power hose could be replaced by the Mark 2 version, (pistol-grip/petrol-pump style hand-grip).

For what it's worth, I had the successor to the UK 'Sensotronic' range: the Hoover 'Alpina Tria-3'. It was quite good, but the power hose was so unwieldy. The remote wired power control sometimes sent the wrong signal (power rising when supposed to be decreasing, etc.)
