ever since I was a kid I have been interested in canister machines of all types. when I was young in the 70s my Dad worked at a wood-working plant in town. I always loved to look at the dust collectors on the sides and top of the building. if you think of it,they are very large canister machines. I would like to hear from other canister collectors that share my interest in them. thanks Bill

While I mostly collect Kirbys, I too have a thing for canisters. There's something about the hose for me, especially a cloth hose! I was fascinated with them as a child as well, I loved when my grandmother let me use her canister (we had a Convertible at home). I was also fascinated by old central vacuum systems as well.

I just found an early Electrolux XXX in pristine condition complete with all of the attachments, paperwork, etc. I believe it's a 1937 model. I've ways wanted one of these, I can't wait to "get it on the road".

I myself prefer a canister or a central cleaning system. I always thought of uprights as old ladies vacuums. LOL

I'm generally a canister fan too. My family always had canisters when I was growing up, and I've mostly had canisters since. In fact, it's only recently that I've gotten many uprights.

I've got an 1969 Electrolux 1205 that I've had since 2004. Other than a plastic Dayton shop vac, it's the only canister I have these days. I used to have a Eureka canister, which I loved. It was orange, made in about 1977. I think it was called a Princess, but I'm not sure. It was in pristine condition and worked fantastically. Somebody gave it to my grandmother, but it was more vacuum than she needed for her little apartment at almost 90 years old, so it stayed in a closet at my parents' house until they got ready to move and they gave it to me. Sadly my step-daughter decided to use it as a shop vac to clean up some spilled dry cat food and pieces got into the motor. It made a hell of a racket after that and my (now ex-) wife insisted I give it to Goodwill. I really hated parting with that thing and if I didn't own so many Kirbys today, I'd be looking for one like it.

Canisters

And tanks are mainly what I collect, I have some uprights but really only like a few of them, I love swivel top machines as well as other designs like the Filter Queen and Silver king, also have a bunch of odd tanks, Wards,Wizards Apexes etc.

I love vintage canister vacuums. They are quiet and smooth running, and there is certain elegance in their design. Have always loved canisters.

I usually tend to prefer an Upright when I do my cleaning, but even though I grew up with a Kirby, I have always liked canisters. I just seem to have a lot of fun playing with the canisters which I currently have:

Rainbow D-2 (purchased new in 1974)
Electrolux Silverado
Electrolux 2100
Filter Queen Majestic
Vita-Vac
Lux Guardian Platinum
Tri-Star MG2
Panasonic

Our entire family had cannisters except one aunt, the only upright I had seen in 62? Kirby, tan or bronze, not sure. OF course hardwood floors were the rage then too, or area rugs. We had wall to wall and all the other modern things, Compact head got worn out on those carpets.

Canisters Rock

While I like both, I grew up with Electrolux canisters. It seems everyone in my family and most of my friend's families all had them. They were extremely popular in the south .

Canisters are my favorite as well. My parents always had Kenmore canisters since I was a kid and still do and they are still my favorite.

Too bad canisters don't seem as popular these days here as they did back then. I like a lot of uprights too like the Hoover Convertibles.

I have mostly canisters in my collection too, Kenmores, Hoovers, a Eureka and an Electrolux.

I have always had canisters.. 80 percent of the cleaning I do is either wood floors or above the floor cleaning which rule out many uprights. Even on carpeting uprights were difficult to use under furniture and beds.

In the 70's, I always had an upright and a straight suction canister for above the floor cleaning. My first power nozzle canister was an Electrolux Marquis. I also had the Discovery III upright to match. With that said, over the years I do find myself using canisters with power nozzles more than my uprights. The only uprights I have that I use in the canister mode, are my Kirby's. When I do my special spring and fall cleaning, I always use a power nozzle canister.

My favorite canisters are Rainbow, Electrolux Commemorative Edition, Aerus/Electrolux 7000, Filter Queen, Air Storm, and I also want to get a Riccar Prima soon.

Although my collection is mostly uprights, I have always loved tanks and canisters as well. When I was little, most of my family had tanks or canisters, and I was a bit afraid of uprights with big shake-out bags. I either thought I was going to get sucked up in the bag or it was going to explode, and for some reason I was more afraid of makes with the bag in front of the handle than behind.
As for the family vacs, Mom had a Lux XXX until I bought her an Electro-Hygiene 966 tank, my maternal Grandmother had a Hoover Constellation 82 (which I still have), my paternal Grandparents had a Filtex and a Lux AE, one Aunt had an AirWay 66, another had a Westinghouse SC-1 (which I also have), another had an Electro-Hygiene 950 (and replaced it with a Filter Queen 350), and another had a Lux, not sure what model, only saw it once. Two aunts had uprights, one had a Hoover 28 and the other had an Electro-Hygiene 230. Also had 2 Great Aunts who had uprights, one had a Hoover 26 and the other had an Electro-Hygiene 230, which she replace with a 285, which she replaced with either an 890 or a 903.
Here are some pics of my tanks and canisters, including Grandma's 82 Connie and Aunt Lu's Westinghouse.
Jeff
