I am , at last,  getting things ready for the "gallery".  Lots of carpentry, etc  needed. But,  it's making me "organize" everything.

So,  would you like to see some of my stuff?  I might show pics of "groups"... so as not to stretch the post on and on.  Unless you'd like "individuals"?  I'll also post, if you'd like,  the non-floor care stuff,  including toys,  memerobilia....

Yes Please!

I'd love to see some group shots. Not everyone has such a diverse collection of Hoovers. Anything Hoover will do.  I can only imagine what they would look like together. Please keep us updated.

I'd like to see the toys and memerobilia.... It might be easier to put up group shots and we can ask for individual shots of our favorites. One of the best parts of Vacuumland is sharing pictures with others.

OK, then!

I have existing pics,  but I might take better "fresh" ones.  There are a few things arriving shortly as well.  The memorabilia is vey nice... some things I'd never seen before.  Perhaps they'll be new to you too.

Get ready,  Mr. Demille..... closeups soon to arrive!

 Thanks for your interest.

OKAY.............

These are not in a certain "order"... just the way I photographed them.  Here are a few to get us started. It IS amazing when you "catalog" everything,  which is what I'm doing. Hope you enjoy!

How about a pair of 65s?  The gold "anniversary" and the first "Convertible".  There is another of each one here in the house.

Fantastic collection, the line-up on the stairs is impressive.
But I love the stick vacs most, the were sold here as well as "Hooverette".
How does the nozzle mechanism work? Ever wondered about these twin toggle pedals there.
Thanks for posting, keep them coming!

I appreciate the comments a lot.

In regard to the "pedals":  You push the brushe us and lock it "up" there with the pedal.  When you "shift the pedal" the other way,  it drops the brush back into use.  It's for carpet AND bare floor surface.

Here's a "coffee can"... belonged to the great Terry Lattz!

It's a repro.... was overpriced,  but....  sometimes you must cross the line.  When my paents bought the house inthe 50s,  that kitchen was 2 rooms and a hallway.  It has asbestos linoleum, a sink on legs (not a pretty keepable one),  celotex staple up ceiling blocks,  a dead chimney from a former coal stove, and......... a double doughnut flourescent light!  Suffice it to say,  it was a dog's breakfast. I did it over about 26 yrs ago... and tweaked it 3 yrs ago.. one addition 3 yrs ago was that new repro light. Glad you like it.

Everybody is surprised by that tub. They go nuts upon seeing it.  One nice thing,  it is easy to clean.   I'll post better detailed pics of it,  if you'd like. It is a full-sized bathtub and shower.  It's porcelain covered cast iron. That pic was taken the day it was reinstalled.  The faucette trim was not complete yet.

It is made by Kohler... "Mayflower".  You MUST order the drain, etc from them, as, NOTHING else will fit it. Kohler and "American Standard"  would be on a level with your "Armitage Shanks",  I believe.  These two makers are considered "the best of the best".  There's a long story behind this tub/shower.

The tile work in your bathroom is beautiful. My question for you is about the prized 1076. I don't know much about the old hoovers. Was there something about the 1076 that sets it apart from the others. It is a sweet lookin machine. Also what did that machine retail for back in the day.

That cleaner was the top of the line at the time. It boasted the large headlight, air channels on the nozzle (not that great), handle grip, 4 position height adjustment (had recently come out on other models), 2 speed motor.

It sold for $84.00 without tools.  I got mine (floor model, no box) for $59.00   (63.00 w/ tax). I got the last one at Jewlcor on July 15, 1975. This vacuum has received excellent service,  first in Wilkes Barre,  then in Scranton.  It was the daily driver for about 20 years!!  It has cleaned an 11 room house faithfully.  And,  it is STILL in this perfect condition!!

I should have said this earlier":

You'll have to excuse the "disarray".  Carpenters,  electricialn, plumbers, etc were rewiring,  installing new sewer lines, a new furnace, etc.  Hopefully, by the Summer,  all 4 cellars will be orderly once more.

I agree about the colors, I bought my Mom a Hoover Convertible model 70 and the sharp blue color, which I now know is delft blue, is what caught my eye. It was the TOL with full wrap around bumper. At that time Eureka was still the color of a model 260, which they had for a long time. Eureka finally started making vacuums in different colors, but they never made as many colors as Hoover did back in the day.......

I can answer that.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

Hoover wanted to become the home appliance King!  Some of their items were made by others and rebadged HOOVER. Other appliances  were made by THEM at the HOOVER factory.   Some of the appliances were "ok"....  they later sold the "appliance line".... forget the name they gave it at the time... Hesco  comes to my mind.  I'll check with Tom  "Anderson"  next time we talk.... very shortly.  He'll know.

HOOVER decided, then,  to concentrate on being the best in FLOORCARE. The also made a toothbrush.. Tom Anderson has one.  The appliance that is eluding us is the popcorn popper. We KNOW they made one,  but  we can't find one.

Amazing,  isn't it? All of it?  I never dreamed I'd EVER own all of this stuff.  But,  I'm very happy to share it all with you.

The way his collection is displayed and documented,  it COULD be considered a "museum" in itself. Fred Stachnick's and Robert's certainly could be. I've seen it, as have many others.

I'd say many of our collections could be considered  one.... if you stretched it a bit.

I'm amazed everytime I unearth  these things.  I'm sure I'll be surprised even more as I "go through" more of it.

True. And, it is cleaned regularly.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I have had aome major renovations done at the house. Walls came down, holes were cut into ceilings to get to pipes, etc.
I took that pic in the midst of it all. There was dust EVERYWHERE! The first contractor took off with thousands of dollars, declared bankruptcy, foreclosed on his house, and moved to Ohio. It was a NIGHTMARE. 2 carpenters later, a lot of work was done. THere is still a lot left to do.
I'd NEVER send a picture of that anywhere, especially to a HOOVER collector from 'across the pond". Cleaning that hallway/staircase is like cleaning a room. But, it IS beautiful now that it is finished. Thanks.

One day I will have a kitchen full of Hoover appliances!  I will need to ship them from America and get voltage converters but that shouldn't be an issue.

If you know what is causing the headaches then I hope something is being done to treat them, you shouldn't have to suffer.  I get migraines almost on a daily basis (mainly affecting my sight) and it is crippling, but I refuse to go to the doctor which is stupid of me and I wouldn't advise it to anybody else.

Oddly, on the top left rear corner is something

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

inscribed with a dremmel.

I have to look closer.  I'm not sure why anyone would do that.  SOMETIMES, it would be inscribed that way in the "Models and Samples" room.... commonly referred to as the "Vault".  Wouldn't it be "fun" to discover that this is the "vault" machine?

We'll see.  I'll look into this deeper at a later time.

Yes, the generic bags will fit. Almost any shakeout bag will. All you'd have to do is change the ring and the bag is good to go.

Tom "A". pointed out to me that a lot of my

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
polishers were made in the 50s...even the 28 was continued.....was then used as a "commercial" upright vacuum.
I'll get them all out as well as the other uprights of the fifties.
I'm glad you're enjoying this sentimental journey through the world of Hoover.
Of course, it's all I have and all I care to collect.
Some like a bigger variety. To me: there is a ton of variety right here within the realm of all these HOOVERS.

I agree completely. You should collect what you like. You're the one who has to live with your collection. There are a lot of vacuums that I like that I will never collect. I'm content seeing other's collections virtually. Certainly those of you who have mini-meets get the benefit of testing out others toys without having to own them.

As with every collection.......................

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

We are the ones who like them,  buy them, trade them,  repair them (or have them repaired),  gift them,  sell them,  trade them,  etc.

And, if we're so inclined,  we host gatherings, "mini meets".  We are the ones who invite, or not people we want to welcome into our homes. I've welcomed people with other vacuum makers into my home numerous times.  I will continue to do so.  Many come again and again.  Some will not return.  I've made some very loyal friends in here. Some demonstrate their loyalty over and over.  Some  do not, sadly.  Loyalty to a friend,  a manufacturer,  is paramount.  Don't you think?

It was the one that completed mine as well. Yes, Tom A. reminded me of the correct model of it. It's easy to getthem all confused. Some get the 1060 mixed up with the 1076, for example. The hood might be close, but, it is clearly not the same machine. Both will show up soon here. maybe even side by side to compare and contrast. I also plan to show the tools for many of these machines, again, to see the front, rear and side conversions. John.

Hooverboy81 - actually I appreciate Dysonman1's correction. Dysonman1 is a renowned vacuum expert and vacuum museum curator, and the fact that he's reading and correcting it is a sign of the quality of this thread. (If it was a sad and pathetic thread, it wouldn't be worth correcting).

John has an excellent collection, and this is a great thread. Every comment/correction helps push it to the top where it's easier to find and read.

That's a beautiful Citation John, and it looks great with the Pixie (or Dustette, as it was marketed in the UK!).

It is interesting that the HOOVER lettering is on the hood above the Hedlite, rather than below it as in the 612, I always thought it looked better below as it was thereby illuminated when in use.

We had the "Dustette", too. It's printed on the

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
bag. Later, they were known as the 'Pixie'. But, then, "Pixie" was used for the "handivac' without the handle.
Another example of multi-useage was the 'Lark'. It was the little 'Kirby-like' lightweight upright. I have the blue one. I won the maroon one years ago, paid w/ a $$ oreder, NEVER got the vac. This was before I knew about Paypal, and had NEVER had a problem w/ a seller before. I never got the machine. Someday, perhaps....isn't that part of the fun of all of this?
It ALSO was the 'stickvac'. Lots of different names, same great HOOVER quality.

Well, I emptied out the camera from the convention

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
and all of my final exams are corrected. I have to get back to my carpentry, AND this thread of photos.
I also plan to post a look at filter bags...starting with the "W" Handisac.
You know it was listed as "reusable", therefore not getting confused with the Airway disposable. I know all about the lawsuits.
Of course, later, all vacuum companies made cleaners with disposable paper bags. The HOOVER manuals always state that it "is imperative to use only genine Hoovaer bags". They ar emade better and are easy to change. I never had a dirt problem changing those bags, and the type "A" is absolutely simple. My cleaners never belch out dust, etc.I guess if your vacuum cleaner belches anything, you must examine it as, clearly you must have done something wrong. . As long as there are no holes, it is installed correctly, etc. We should also be careful not to pick up tacks, coins, pins, etc. That's what the light is for. Who would knowingly pick up thos things?
As a Rainbow demo once, I saw the demonstrator rip a Windtunnel filterbag, so it WOULD blow dust around when turned on. I thought that was a bad tactic during an otherwise nice little demonstration. Although, I made my self abundantly clear BEFORE said presentation that I would NOT be buying one.
I must say, in respect to Rainbows..... I DO like the little table top filter (not a vacuum) and wouldn't mind procuring one someday. They seem like a great little appliance.

I saw one of those cute little air filter things the other day. I think it fragranced the air as well? Might be something fun to play with!

Post# 328520 , Reply# 241   7/2/2015 at 15:38 (3,192 days old) by ralph123 (Little Rock, AR)

I had a similar experience with a rather nefarious Rainbow salesperson. I wondered why he was rubbing the bag with his fingers. Makes sense that he was attempting to make the bag belch some dirty air. Given that the air coming out of the bag still had to travel through a pre-motor filter and a post-motor HEPA filter, his attempt wasn't very successful.

The Rainbow Rainmate

Is, and this is just my opinion, a good Fragrance diffuser, but not so much for an actual air cleaner.  Some dust may accidentely get trapped, but for the most part it just imparts smells and some moisture to the air.

Again, just in my opinion.  I found one at Goodwill for $1.95 and use it often, but don't see a lot of dust in the basin.

I NEVER expected to have all of this, who really does?
My sister was in visiting from Virginia this past weekend. She brought up the "Hoovers" at a dinner party. They all asked, "You still have all that stuff? How many Hoover products do you have NOW?" I heard gasps....... I told my sister that if I should die, (no intention any time soon, but you never know what might happen)... there are lengthy instructions as to what to do with them all. I told her, "Don't just ask friends/family, Anybody want a sweeper?" After I told her pertinent details, she saw things differently. I can imagine when I Do 'leave", there'll be a lot of giggling, followed by, "Oh my Gosh...." then...........

What used to be fodder for laughter has definitely changed.

Your collection is great John!! Tons of Hoover heritage. Maybe the next Minimeet we can make use of a fondue pot. Cheese fondue, Spinach dip, crab dip, Buffalo Chicken dip, I'm sure we could come up with something. The electric skillets look really neat too!

How is the new KitchenAid dishwasher doing?

I hope that your headaches are doing better. Whitney my brothers fiance has tons. She was prescribed Imitrex which has to be taken at onset of them. Sometimes they worked and other times they didn't. Her newest prescription from Neurologist is Maxalt, again to be taken at onset of migraine. Both of those however are only to help ease pain once migraine arrives. For prevention they have recommended various dosages of Topomax and a few others out there. Hopefully your Neurologist has some great advice for your case!!

Hydration is a key as well! There is no substitute for water. Physicians told us that Iced Tea and even 100% Apple Juice will refresh you from the heat but dehydrate you further in the end. They wanted us to follow Iced Tea and Apple Juice with a glass of water. No soda drinkers in our house, so we don't have to worry about that boat!!!

If ever you get into heavy reorganizing or want a weekend of heavy work, contact me and with notice I can get up there for a weekend and help. I enjoy helping friends! Coming to your house I know I won't need to bring a vacuum but I can bring landscaping tools or other things or even just food! It's what I do everyday for clients of mine. My client list is growing and business is better too!! From lawn mowing, planting, weeding, cleaning, basement reorganization, spackling, I do almost anything my clients might need help with around their homes! I don't work for the commercial cleaning company anymore nor Rainbow or Filter Queen. I like my own thing with working for families and households.

Hope you're doing well John! Stay well and cool in Pittston!! Tell everyone I say Hi that you speak too!! Shoutouts to Joel W, Joe K, Matt G, Bill W, Greg P., Mark & JT, Chris S., Mike G. and everyone else from Minimeets!! Hope everyone is great!!

Happy SUPREME Sunday from the Hoover PowerMax Supreme S3611!! This is the 1st time I have ever fully photographed this machine as it's still new to me. Thank you Chris!! It's the 1st Hoover canister I've ever tried with the variable speed motor!

You have such a nice collection of Hoover Convertibles and kitchen appliances. Back then, I thought Hoover only made vacuum cleaners.

BTW, the upright model in the picture in reply# 201 looks modernized but unappealing. It seems lighter than the old Convertibles but less durable. Are the older models better than this lightweight Platinum upright?

Even if the upright models from the 60's and 70's were better than the Platinum upright, I would prefer getting one of those lightweight upright models from Riccar, Simplicity or Soniclean since, apart from valuing quality, I assume that the bags compatible with the vintage Convertibles are discontinued.

Not even! Lol. Hoover type C bags are readily available from Hoover, as well as aftermarket versions. Belts are still readily available, bearings, carbon brushes, brush strips...because, you know, they're still manufacturing several variations of the Convertible for the commercial sector. Have you even used a Hoover Convertible?

Nice to hear from you. THe dishwasher is doing great...only used it 7 times, but.
Sure, we can make 'fondue' next time you're here.
The yard is not its usual 'manicured state'... waiting for a part for the lawnmower..... long story.
As far as the headaches. a nightmare!! I'm drinking lots of water... have lost 7 pounds since the convention. Sadly, down the road, these headaches might require a craniotomy... another long story. I try very hard not to think about that. In the meantime, I just chug along. Looks like a 'summer minmeet' will have to wait: just too many things happening. I think the next meet will be the "Monster Mash Bash, 4, or is it 5??" in October. More info on that later. I hope you can make it. They are always a fun time.
We're having an 85th birthday celebration in August for my aunt. I'm trying to make my annual visit to North Canton soon as well. The summer session at the college has just begun, and I'm volunteering at my church festival in 2 weeks. So, a ton of things are happening in a close time frame.
I'm glad to see things are going nicely for you. Let's talk soon. You know you are ALWAYS welcome here at my place.

Hooverboy81, I don't have much experience with a Hoover Convertible nor did my parents ever own one since I was born. I also wasn't informed much about the kinds of bags that the Hoover products use.

However, after you told me the bags for the Convertibles are still available now, I did some research on these bags in other websites and I learned that we can indeed order the bags for these vintage Convertible models on Amazon.

You can still get new ones made by Hoover, (in China). You still may find lots and lots of them on ebay (genuine North Canton). I find them all the time at thrift stores and scoop them up whenever I see them.
You'll have no trouble getting any of the bags, with the exception of the "W" (handisac). I doubt you'll be needing them.

The "Platinum" is ok....  the bag is HUGE, I like that.  When you plug it in,  a light goes on.  I KNOW there's power. I turned it on! That is not necessary! The light is bright,  it has 2 speeds,  the fooe release is on the RIGHT side. Hoover NEVER did that!  I can imagine a lot of them breaking that way.

The little "Portapower wannabe", is loud, the tools look like toys,  It's ok.  I don't use the Platinum often,  but, it's not bad... NOT Hoover's finest hour,  but........

Headaches are a horror to suffer with. Some people never get them. I have one about 16 days out of a month. Sadly, one gets used to them. It could be worse, however, and might be later.

Dear John,I´m sorry to know you´re still having those headaches. You know I worry about them, but I know you can´t avoid them. There´s not much I can say about them, but there´s a lot a friends around you who loves you, worry about your health and above all you´re not alone, even for people so far away as the other hemisphere.
Hugs Gus.

I've had headaches (but not like this) since I was 10 years old. My grandmother, aunt, father, and nephew have all had 'brain things'...so, it's not 'news'. But......
you have always been so very kind to everyone in here. THat shows the kind of person you are....that is truly a gift!
There'll be more photos very soon. I love getting these things together to share with others. They're like hamsters: one day you have one, then two.............................................. What's great is finding the things you've only heard about. WhenI visit my friend, Tom A. I see things and make a mental list. I enjoy seeing my friends come for a visit/meet and see, try out, photograph all this stuff. It's great.
More pics VERY SOON.......

"Headaches are a horror to suffer with."

jmurray01's profile picture

I know this all too well unfortunately, having suffered with almost daily migraines for the past 2 years.  Around 50% of the time they are just a very bad headache but for the other 50% they include sight-loss/distortion, nausea and numbness of limbs.  The doctors cannot explain why I get them and blood tests showed nothing.  It was worrying at first but now, like you, I have learned to live with them.

Back on topic - it is great to see more pictures!!  That air purifier is very interesting as I've never seen one made by HOOVER.  What year was it from do you know?

Post# 332122 , Reply# 291   8/20/2015 at 12:44 (3,143 days old) by Tech12 ()
Sorry to detract from the original thread.

But J Murray: If they've not already done one, talk to your doctor about having a Cat scan. I suffered for years with the same sort of symptoms you describe and had multiple blood tests etc, all negative . It wasn't until I changed doctor & was sent to a specialist who ordered a Cat scan that they discovered a brain tumour was the cause. I hope it's not the same in your case, but if it is you can get the treatment you need.

Better safe than sorry.

It is amazing when you think of all the "stuff" we find. As far as the lasundry machines,  "over here",  we never really had HOOVER washers and dryers like "across the pond".  We mostly had the portables.

These Maytags are wonderful. Someone mentioned me having a museum.  PLEASE!  I'd only be a self-proclaimed curator.  I have a few degrees, but none in Museum Studies.  I just have a collection,  a 'gallery' at best.

John, if there were a HOOVER museum you would be more than qualified to run it! Your house is better than a museum though, because it is a place where the vacuums can still "live" normal lives and be used, rather than being placed on podiums etc...

I would so love to see your collection in person one day. If you would have me!

I think we'll look at stick vacs next.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

I have loads of them...... various styles and colors.

Just yesterday, I got a cordless Windtunnel stick vac.  It doesn't have a maek on it.  The brushroll was loaded w/ hair.  OUTSIDE,  I took care of that... PERFECT.  These are very costly, complete w/ battery.  I only paid..... (almost died).. $13.00   uhuh !!

Then, I spied with my little eye,  a black Brushvac... perfect condition.  It, too, was only $12.00

I'm amazed at what people will discard!

Plus, I'm going to pay a tribute to the Brits....... sharing all of my HOOVERS made on the other side of "the pond".

I now have 3 "Victorian Rose" Convertibles: 2 have original bags.

Gotta love 'em!  More pics soon.  A lot has been happening lately.

Oh, Janine,

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
So sorry to not have answered your motor question.
Yes, the motors are all the same. Sometimes the bumper guard was half, other models were wrap around.
It was the same way with the Convertibles: one model had no light, no handle grip, half a bumper, snap bag. But, the HOOVER motor was the same. They used to call these the Convertible "Special".
The Handisac vacuum "family" all had the same motors as well.
I hope this answers your question. Again, sorry for gertting back to you so late.
John

I must get back to posting more photos as promised. I'm having trouble loading pics from mu digital camera. It's the same one I always used. Not sure how to remedy that.
But, lots more pics on the way if/when I straighten it all out.

And............................. This week, I THINK

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
the carpenter is coming to look at the wiring and plumbing that has to be done it 'the room' so I can get in there and do my work. One more wall has to come down, after the wires come out. It will become a "loft". Track lighting is going in as well. Not sure how I'll cover the floor. Choices, choices....

That sounds like it's going to me really nice. One day, if I get my own house, I'd love to have a room for just my fans and vacuums, with displays, lighting, etc. For now I have to make due with keeping it all in the bedroom and arranging it as well as I can. At least I have a big bedroom and walk in closet.

Hi John....

Wow what a collection!! Really enjoyed going through all the posts and pictures. My grandmother had a Hoover Holiday. As a kid I never understood why the Holiday badge was displayed dominetly versus Hoover. I always wondered what brand the machine was until I saw the word Hoover on the spec plate I believe under the machine. Always baffled me. If I read properly, I also think the history on your home is very cool. You must have some amazing memories! Nothing beats that! Hope all is well! Best! Richard.

Hi Gang!

With the inability to "hunt" treasures, I thought I'd re-share some of my collection. Some may never have seen them.
Now that I'm home, I'm up in that room, getting things ready for the carpenter to come, do his thing, so I can finally get this room "up and running".
So, enjoy, if you'd like.

John,

I hope your gallery room is big, you have a lot of Hoover to display. Can't wait to see it.

EARLY HOOVERS

GOOD HEAVENS - WHAT A COLLECTION!

All Hail from Land's End in the UK!

I joined your sister site when re-building an English Electric Tumble Dryer of 1961 - I must say, I think you Hoover lads are even more obsessional - - !!

I joined here because I seem to have aquired 6 Hoovers 3 pre-war and 3 up to the 50's. I wondered if anyone has a source of original bags for the bean-cans and the pre-war 375. Also a bag for a 119? Also need a front brush for an original Dustette? Also a source of rubber-ware - for the Hoovers - not me!!

Anyone able to date early Hoovers, please?

Best wishes,

Kenneth.

thank you. Joe resurrected this old thread. I'm working on a 'gallery' in my house. It's a lot of work. It involves, electrical and plumbing work. Next June, I'm hosting The VCCC convention in Scranton. I have a lot to do to get things ready.
Glad you enjoyed the pics.
Joe, I'm not sure where everything is going to fit. But, it will!
