For some reason lately, I keep thinking of this vacuum we had when I was a kid called a Bissell Deluxe Sweepmaster. It was a basic stick vacuum, but very well made. The top portion with the motor housing and handle was all metal, painted a medium metallic blue--an automotive quality paint job, I might add. The bottom portion with the nozzle and barrel (for lack of a better term) that housed the bag was a light blue plastic. It was light, well balanced and easy for a six- or seven-year-old kid to use.
That thing was also quite durable. At some point in the '80s, it got passed over to my grandmother for her to use in her little apartment, Then the last time I saw it was maybe 15 years ago at my sister's house. She was using it to sweep the kitchen floor and it still looked like new. I'm sure she's gotten rid of it by now, as she always wants the latest, most trendy thing. She's been through a couple of Dysons and her husband was singing the praises of their new Meile not too long ago. I also had a Hoover Quickbroom, which was quite similar but almost entirely plastic, back in the late '80s. I got rid of it when I moved in 1998, but I wish now I'd kept it, especially since I'm now in a house that has mostly hardwood floors. My Electrolux 1205 is more than adequate for the job with its floor nozzle, but it is somewhat cumbersome dragging the canister around. I've been keeping my eye out at thrift shops for a Sweepmaster or a Quickbroom, but no luck so far. |

I just did a Google search and found a photo of a Deluxe Sweep Master. Our blue one was prettier--and much better cared for.
