My mind has been all over the place recently when it comes to vacuums, but I've recently been inspired to try out a Miele. Earlier this week, I stopped into Bed Bath & Beyond and was surprised to see they carried Miele. I should probably stay up to date on these things. Anyway, I took the two models off the self, the Titan and Olympus, to study. They seemed very impressive. From my very limited time I had with them, they both seem extremely maneuverable and sturdy. The rug-floor combo tool on the Olympus was actually what I was most excited about. Up until now, the traditional Electrolux tool was my favorite, but the Miele just seemed so well built and efficient. Plus, due to the contemporary crush-proof hose and aluminum wands, it seemed like the tool glided across the carpet.
Since we have pets, I would of course be more inclined towards the Titan. The electric hose was, as expected, heavier but nevertheless impressive. The powernozzle, the Electro-comfort, still glided and seemed solid as well. The bag was a tad small though.
I know the community tends to lean towards Sebo when it comes to German machines. However, Sebo is much more expensive in most cases, and I could never afford anything more than an S2 Miele anyway. So am I crazy to be considering such a BOL product? Are there any known problems I should be aware of? |

The Miele S2 is an excellent suction only canister. I bought one and I am thoroughly impressed.
The only concerns are easily rectified: I added a high guage extension cord to extend the 18foot cord and give me more reach. And I bought a Miele tool adapter for $8 so that I could use any North American attachment with the Miele (I found the bristles of the dusting brush to be a bit harsh for delicate surfaces). This little vac is what a Eureka Williams vac would have been in the 21st century had it not been gobbled up by another company! According to Consumer Reports frequency-of-repair surveys, Miele is a relatively reliable brand for canisters - better than Hoover, Dyson and Swedish Electrolux. Go for it! |

I also have the delphi. It is a great canister. Very quiet and quite powerful. I once used it at 2 am while my partner was sleeping and he never knew until he got up and the house was clean. The hose and cord do not bother me at all. I think it would be a great choice for any household. The power nozzle also grooms our plush carpet nicely. It does filter excellent without the hepa filter. The bags do not leak in the chamber at all :)

Sadly Im not a fan of the S2.
In the UK they originally came with a shorter hose (1.5 metres versus 1.8 standard) and a short power cord (5.5 metres) which I think Miele are still building these vacuums with. Also comes with the cheaper suction only floor head in the UK, an all plastic affair that isn't as good as the metal sole plate versions. The S4 was better built in my experience and had the longer hose; but Miele got greedy and wanted to build a budget "short" cylinder vac. The result is the S2 which has lighter plastics and that external tool storer whch you lose out automatically over the far more durable and heavier S5 series. Dependent on cost price I usually sway buyers towards other brands or an S5 or S8 if the price is right. After all, when the original canister design of a Miele houses tools under a flap in the body, one would think that original design element should be carried across the whole range, at the very least. |
