yesterday I had a great surprise because a man came and serviced my grandmas two kirby and he said they were in such a bad state that he couldn't do anything to them. So he brought in the new avalir and we were all amazed how much better it was and my grandma got one And he took the other two away

Sounds like your Kirby guy wanted to make a quick sale, there's nothing unsalvagable about those.

Haha typical Kirby salesman. Kirbys are not that difficult to service and repair.

The motor on the G4 was broken the fill tubes where broken on
Both machines

Fill tubes aren't a problem, the motor might have just needed new brushes. But anyway the Avalir looks nice I like the new handle makes it easier to carry.

As long as your Grandma is happy then it's not a problem :-)

This is what upsets me about Kirby. Machines are great, and the most people that peddle them are douchebags. The "friendly repair guy" took two perfectly good machines for free, and sold the machine that's overpriced by several hundred bucks.

"Broken motor" (either brushes, cord, or the switch), "broken fill tubes" (about $16.- per tube on Ebay)........not only that he will keep the difference from the "real price", and the selling price (with bogus "trade in value" for two machines), he will also get his commission, AND......have two perfectly good Kirbys to put on Ebay/Craigs!!!

This equals the sales tactics of the sleaziest used car salesman. If you research,.....you'll find out how many lawsuits Kirby had to settle (and pay off) for this kind of behavior of their "distributors".

And remember,......if someone in your family needs a new vacuum (because the old one is "broken"), ask here (or search) how to fix it. You can still go and buy a new one, but at least you can sell the old repaired one for some hard cash, instead giving it away for a "dog and pony show".

KIRBY dealers are NOT in business to sell used Kirbys some might but those are the ones who can't sell a new machine .I know many Kirby dealers across the U.S. they sell new machines . My KIRBY guy scraps the metal of older machines . From what I read Kirbyg6 and his Grandmother are very happy with the Avalir many KIRBY customers update their machines especially those machines they have are very old now the two of them are happy . If every customer kept their old machines Kirby would be out of business .
How bout we let kirbyg6 and his grandmother enjoy their purchase :) and not speculate on all that could or couldn't be wrong it's over , George good luck with that gorgeous machine .

No problem with Kirby dealers selling new machines. It's the back handed tactics that some sales people use that I object to.

And why would he scrap a Kirby that just needs a new fill tube?

And on one hand you're saying Kirbys are built to last and on the other you're saying if people keep their machines Kirby would go out of business?

I shall put my 2cents in once again

If he were honest, he would have mentioned to the customer that Kirby offers a lifetime to rebuild on their machines, and for a nominal fee their old machine would be returned to new condition.   He failed to do that in interest of a sale.

Unless OP grandma, said "oh no, I don't want to wait and want a new now."  Which is possible, if we give the devil his dues.

So does Kirby have the lifetime rebuild program in the UK?

What is the price of the lifetime rebuild on the Avelir?

Avalir isn't listed on their website yet.  Rebuild program states call for information.

This reminds me of one time about 20 years ago when my refrigerator went out. It turned out to be a $27 relay. The guy who fixed it said it was common for less scrupulous repairmen to say the compressor was bad and offer to sell the person a good used refrigerator and to haul the old one away. They would then fix the relay on that one and sell it at a tidy profit to the next sucker whose relay went out. He said his mother had been scammed that way when he was on vacation and he found out about it when he went to the guy's shop and spotted his mother's refrigerator, repaired and for sale out front.

If the salesman knows how to fix the old Kirbys, which he most likely does, then he can probably make a pretty decent side business out of selling the repaired ones to an entirely different market segment. People who would look on eBay or Craigslist to buy a used Kirby probably wouldn't have the cash or the inclination to buy a brand new one. I know I would fall into this category.

I'm not a "Kirbylover", BUT..... if anyone WANTS to lay out that kind of cash.... go to it. But, ANY vacuum that can cost that much should be fixable.. those 2 certainly could be. They should be built to last, and, I presume are. It does seem a bit odd that a repaiman of anything would have abrand new model in the truck, ready to sell.
Remember Hoover's old ad?..... "You might never need to buy a new one again". Nowadays, that's not a problem. Again, it's neither my vacuum nor my money. But, to pay that much for a cleaner..... perhaps the same things will go wrong on the new one.
But, who am I to tell anyone how to spend $?

Post# 316401 , Reply# 22   2/22/2015 at 08:59 (3,343 days old) by danielsand ()

To each his own Dan. But when I hear "grandma", and "unfixable" Kirby, that resulted in the purchase of the new Avalir, I KNOW there has been some lying involved, and that upsets me. I have no problem if "grandma" loves her new Kirby, and I'm glad she does, but "scraping" the "trade in" Kirby is NOT what they do around here (SoCal). I don't know where you are, and your friendly distributor might be a saint, but I live in a different environment, where lying and scams are the flavor of the day in many businesses, not just vacuum cleaner sales. This irritates me very much.

I honestly doubt that ANY Kirby is "scrapped" because it has broken fill tube and/or damaged cord. The statement "there is nothing that can be done with the old ones" in the OP, is absolutely a LIE, and that is what I responded to. I KNOW how simple these machines are, and I KNOW the prices of the replacement parts, and I am not in the Kirby business. "Friendly repair man" should have advised the grandma about what can be done, and how much time/money it will take, but as we all know......"repairmen" do not carry new Avalirs with them on the service calls, which this wasn't to begin with. It was a sales call under guise of a service call, and grandma was lied to.

That's all I reacted to. I am not bashing Kirby in any way. I love them, and I own five of them. I also owned two car dealerships in the past, and I know that not all car salesmen are douchebags,.......but MANY are (same with Kirby "distributorships").

Over and out.

put. Yearsago, my late's father's friend , an Electrolux dealer, stopped by to look at our cleaner, which needed to be serviced. It was a Hoover 67. He began telling my mom, "You don't want this serviced, do you know how much better an Electroluc would clean this place? I have one in the car, I'd love to show you"... Nedless to say, the Electrolux stayed in the car. He took the Convertible, put in a new bulb, greased the motor and dropped it off.

You know what they say about those who assume ...

Just because you have lived a life where every one scams doesn't mean the whole world is one huge scam .

I am in NJ and my KIRBY guy is a saint he has been in business 39 years selling KIRBY vacuums and has a huge customer base ZERO complaints . Many people see a new vacuum they want it that's how the world works yes they are built to last a lifetime but most consumers want the newest one out .

I don't remember George saying his grandmother got taken advantage of they LOVE their Avalir , too many chime in with nasty remarks about being taken advantage of over a KIRBY sale and all I read was how happy George and his grandmom are .

Of course there are scammers every where but this is a happy story about a wonderful KIRBY Avalir purchase . Let's not turn this happy story into something it's not many people only look at the bad side and NEVER the good side . I only care that they continue to purchase KIRBY and are happy lifetime customers .

Congratulations again George and your grandmom enjoy your new KIRBY for a lifetime or until you decide you want a new one .

It does depend on the sales rep. My G4 came with the sales paperwork and that was £1000 new in 1994. My mother in law paid £1600 for her ultimate G. I've seen them go as high as £2200

Post# 316457 , Reply# 37   2/22/2015 at 15:06 (3,342 days old) by danielsand ()

We need to agree to disagree here Dan. I am not assuming anything. I read the OP correctly.

IF I read the following: "Repair man said he could take these two in, and for "X" amount of $$$, he would return them in "X" amount of time, in "like new" condition. And at that point grandma said: Naaah, just give me the new one, I'm ready for it." I would say: "Bravo! Congrats on the purchase of an awesome vacuum."

Since repair man said: "There is nothing I can do with these, and I happen to have a brand new Avalir in the van", I concluded (not "assumed") that he was lying, because I KNOW that the old ones CAN be fixed (and most likely WILL be), by the "friendly repair man" or someone else.

That's all. I know that YOU know (you are not "Kirbyloverdan" for nothing!) that ANY Kirby CAN be fixed, and that the parts for ANY repair are about 1/100 of the purchase price of the new. If grandma has a lot of money, and needs to have "the latest and the greatest" out there (I think not, because she kept Heritage for appx. 30 years, and G4 for appx. 20 years), more power to her, and no harm done.

I read the OP as another successful coercing tactic, to force a less knowledgeable individual into purchasing something he/she doesn't need ("wanting", and "needing" are two different things as we all know!).

If someone calls for Kirby repair at home, and ends up giving away TWO Kirbys for a new one (plus untold number of "Benjamins"!), because the old ones "can not" be fixed, that certain someone is being straight out lied to, regardless of what anyone says.

Water under the bridge, I guess. Grandma is happy with her new machine, and we should all be happy for her, I agree on that. And knowing what YOU know, I'm sure you can agree that this lady was lied to by the "repair man".

And, I'm not even a Kirby guy. I know people who have that service.. if you are the original owner nad have the paperwork,it's a nominal fee. it's a drop in the bucket compared to a new one. But, again, if one wants to spend on a new one.... have at it.

Last year, at the convention, the club sent a 1961, (I believe)Sanitronic back to Kirby for a rehab, and then raffled it off. It was a great looking machine. But, not being a Kirbylover, and not being the one to lay out the finances...... I too, hope both of you enjoy your purchase.
No one should bash, in here, or elsewhere..about cleaners, cleaner owners, etc.{enough said about that}

In the end, you did what you wanted to do and we can't argue with that. I cannot say that my PERSONAL experience with Kirby dealers is all that great. In my city, the Kirby dealer is insulting, rude and greedy. He questioned me for looking for parts for my classic. He put down the machine and started a sales pitch. At least in my area, they don't care about your old Kirby, they just want you to buy a new one, and trash the old one. I refuse to go there for anything.

Whatever gives you the impression that people weren't interested?

Whether people like the Kirby or not, or feel that your gran was ripped off or not, it still makes for an interesting discussion. So there's really no need to be sorry for posting it.

Just because people having differing opinions doesn't make it uninteresting or unworthy.
