I am sure it's been asked many time ,so please forgive me for having to ask. I am interested in the history of the rotomatic so from the beginning. I noticed there were several round designs in the rotomatic series. Was the taller thinner model like the 860 an earlier model or later in the fifties? Please let me know. Thanks so much. Bill

Roto Matic

The first was the dark green Roto Matic 800, this had no wheels ,the top attached with 2 knurled knobs, this was made in 1952 and 53, in 54 the same machine was made in red and grey, an optional wheeled dolly was offered, this was a simple thing looking like an X that clipped on the bottom, in 1955, this machine became the 800-A, it differed in that it had clamps on the sides to hold the top on, the dolly was a much nicer round 1 piece unit with a rubber bumper and the switch was moved high up on the side of the machine....oh yes, sometime in 54 the motor was changed from the 4250 Lamb to the more modern and more powerful 4450 Lamb, if im not mistaken the 900 machines came out in the fall of 56,after that different versions of the 800 were sold as a lower priced machine.such as the 860 you mention.

Once the "Golden Crown" models came out - the Roto-Matic was the 'lower priced' model.

Eureka & Singer

There is a Life magazine in 56 that has great 2 page color ads for both the Eureka and Singer with upright and large & small canisters.Same canisters, different trim/colors.

I mis stated

The 801-a was 1954 and the one with the upper switch and big dolly was the 805.These were all good vacuums, and were all exceptional buys at 69.95,consider the comparable Constellation was 97.50 and the GE was 89.95 and then 79,95 a few years later, the first Westinghouse canister was 100.00 and the Apex was 100.00 ..the Eureka was a great buy and a very good option.
